Scribblenauts developer almost done with the DS photo

Scribblenauts developer 5TH Cell has done amazing work on the Nintendo DS. Drawn to Life, the brilliant Lock's Quest and the aforementioned Scribblenauts have all helped to bring the best out of Nintendo's handheld system, but it seems that the talented studio will be looking elsewhere in the future, planning to do more on consoles from now on.

"This is our big last hurrah for DS games," says creative director Jeremiah Slaczka. "That's it for original stuff. We're now going to move on to consoles in the next year. We might still do DS; I'm not saying we're not going to [develop DS games]. But our focus is definitely going to be on console."

I'd love to see what 5TH Cell can do on a home console. With such brilliant work done on the DS, I can only imagine what they'll do with some Hi-Def power behind them. Provided of course that they're not just going to stick to the Wii.

"That's it for original stuff." Am I reading it wrong, or is that a really dismaying statement?

"Provided of course that they're not just going to stick to the Wii."

That's probably exactly what they're going to do.

I wouldn't be surprised if they just stick with the Wii, at least to begin with. They're already developing Drawn to Life for it.

I'm not sure what to make of the, "That's it for original stuff," comment. Am I misinterpreting it? Or are they really done making new, inventive handheld games and will now get into the rut of generic console games?

There's no shame in being a great developer for a handheld system.

Great news for me. I don't own handhelds and all this scribblenauts coverage is almost making me envious for one.

Ugh. Kinda sounds like they're becoming the new Grin/Backbone/Obsidian...

Someone PLEASE get clarification of that statement!!!

Ugh, i hope they don't develop only for the Wii. i don't have one, and if that means i wouldn't be able to play their newest game then I would be very, very sad.

I wouldn't take the "Original" stuff too literally. I think he means just games for the DS, not new stuff in general. He wouldn't ACTUALLY mean no more original ideas. That would be silly.

I hear they're doing Waggled to Life for Wii. The graphics will, of course, be scaled back from the DS version to maintain a smooth framerate.

Sounds like a comment by a PS3/X360 fanboy...

@Ronnande: Oh come on, If they were going to develop for the Wii, they might as well stick with the DS.

After three awesome games, I'm gonna give 5th Cell the benefit of the doubt. These guys have proven to me that they know what they're doing, and I'll be automatically interested in anything they might produce in the future, be it DS, Wii, or other.
