TheGoldenDonut let us know that ScrewAttack posted its top ten worst Mario games of all time. I have no life, so I'm making shrewd use of Gametrailers' embed codes to bring it to the Destructoid collective. There are some obscure gems in this countdown, such as Mario Teaches Typing, in which the titular plumber harnesses the power of the keyboard to numb brains the world over or Mario's Fundamentals, which are both fun AND mental.
Of controversial note, however, is the inclusion of Mario Bros. 2 on the list. I know a few fellow editors think this is somewhat pretentious, a trendy thing to do now that we all know it was originally Doki Doki Panic. What do you think? Is it truly worthy of being in a list of the worst Mario games ever, or are the ScrewAttack guys being just a little bit snobbish on this one?

Snobbish. I've known it wasn't Nintendo developed for years, but it didn't matter. It's still a fantastic game. People like saying "Doki Doki Panic" like they like name dropping Miyamoto. "I'M HARDCORE GAMER TO T3H MAX! I know not-so-obscure game trivia!" Blow me, hardcore nation!
I think the point they were trying to get across including Super Mario Bros. 2 in the lot is not that its a bad game, just that just wholly does not fit in the vein of any other Mario game (seriously Wart - wtf? )
Well if it's not a bad game it shouldn't be ont he ton ten bad games list. Maybe an honorable mention or a "We discussed this." There are far far far far far far far far far far far far far worse mario games.
I totally disagree with the inclusion of SMB2. Craig, if you're reading, this is not acceptable and I intend to wrestle with you until you take it back.
Hey, Puzzle Quest is just Bejeweled with a different look slapped on it. Does it make it a bad game? No. So to put the really fun but weird SMB2 in it was just flame-fodder.
Mario 2 is, quite frankly, one of the absolute best Mario games ever made, and I will stand by that until the day I die. This list became dead to me, the second they showed Mario 2. Seriously, who cares that it was a rehash of a foreign game? It rocked and it's still one of the most (oddly enough) original entries in the Mario series.
Mario 2 US was made because the Japanese SMB2 is WAY TOO FREAKIN' HARD FOR ANYONE! Man, that game was an evil exercise in memorization and just-barely-made-it jumps. And that was on Super Mario All Stars, where it was slower and saved your progress after each level!
Chris, perfect pacing and delivery? Seriously? Dude, I have never once laughed at anything they've ever done. Like most "funny" videos on the internet, it's lame beyond all reason. Their top ten lists are amusing only because they're top ten lists and I'm a human being and human beings are easily amused by that kind of shit.
Mario 2 was fucking awesome. As a game, it probably doesn't have any reason to be on the list; but as a "different game with a mario skin" it might.
Doesn't mean it's not badass, though. Hell, that game even had more features than mario 3 when you take into consideration all the shit in it. Alternate worlds, 4 different characters each with different "attributes" for stuff like jumping and picking up items. In fact, now that I think about it, I think Mario 2 is officially a mario game just because of the fact that so many of it's ideals were used in later games. Toad's "slow but solid" style of movement in Mario 2 surely influenced how his cart handled in Mario Kart. Hell, in Super Princess Peach, she even gets back her levitation jump technique.
Super Mario 2 and Picross are good, the way they come across on Picross it looks like that puzzle games are boring. But instead it looks like they can't figure out how to play the game.
As for SMB2 (US) that's pure shock value.
SMB2 was as much awsomeness as you could ever get out of Mario. The shy guys were so cool. The vegies and the doors to the other side of the level. It was soooo cool.
Hey, I respectfully disagree. I like their stuff. I find it amusing, and I generally like all their top 10's.
I can imagine people not liking them, but something about them appeals to me. Now, I agree, I don't really think they have perfect anything, I was just counter-pointing Orcist.
@Snaileb
You're talking about my gamer tag right? It should work fine, I just haven't logged into Xbox Live in like a couple of months or something :)
Haven't had a whole lot of time for games lately, so I've been focusing on my movie watching.
But, that will all change soon with all the holiday goodies on the way soon. I'll -make- time for gaming then. Looks like BioShock will be the first game to pull me back in.
The U.S. version of SMB 2 was like a penis slap to the face from Japan. They really believed the Americans would find it too hard to play, so we don't even get the real thing until it's released as "The Lost Levels". Oooooh. Despite the fact that I enjoyed it, I do feel insulted for Japan's decision to do that and I stand by having that game on the list.
I never really played Mario Bros 2(US) until it came out for the Gameboy Advance. I actually liked it. Shy Guys are cool. So yeah, ScrewAttack Fucked it up as usual.
I enjoyed Mario 2 immensely when I was a kid so I definitely disagree there. I also disagree with Mario Clash and Mario Tennis on the VB. Those were good games back then. Sure they're not so spectacular now and you get headaches from them, but they were awesome back when the VB debuted. I still break out the VB once a year or so and play Mario Tennis and Wario.
I for one am in the consperacy theory camp that thinks nintendo didn't actually think the real mario 2 was too hard for america but rather just thought it wasn't that good. Think about it nintendo releases Mario 2 in japan and everybody starts bitching about how the game is constantly killing them for no reason. Nintendo wouldn't want to hurt mario's good name in other teritories if they don't have to and they can't just give the US nothing because that would cause even more bitching so they give them this other game that they know is good but probably wouldn't have done well without brand recognition. But wait, when some asks them why the games are different they can't say "it's because the japanesse mario 2 sucked" because that would send the wrong message to japanesse consumers, so they say it's to hard instead so japan feels okay but what nintendo doesn't realize is that they just insulted the gaming skills of the entire western world.

I.E. "Oooo Look at me! I never had fun with this game so it's teh worst game evah!"
*Peers into past*
"LOL I just owned that gay dinosaur, best mario evah!"
Jerk-wads.
And other than the inclusion of SMB2, it's not a bad list. Well, it is a bad list, but it's a good bad list.
Why doesn't Yeas work anymore..?

But like Orcist said, without SMB2 there would be no Shy Guys, transvestite dinosaurs, and turnips of the like.
But I gotta admit, Hotel Mario is disgusting.
I agree, the only reason ScrewAttack is even known at all is because of James Rolfe. Every other feature on the website has been painfully mediocre.
Am I the only guy here that enjoyed Mario's Time Machine?
I thought it was a neat concept.
