With a title that I would have expected our own Chad Concelmo to concoct, ScrewAttack has kicked off a new series entitled The Best EVER! The premise is quite self-explanatory: folks ask SA their opinions on the best "whatever," then they present their responses. Instead of doing a typical "top 10" list or making a single, definitive choice, each staff member offers his personal favorite.
For this first episode, the topic is retro bosses. I'm guessing "retro" means any console at least two generations back -- The Great Mighty Poo from Conker's Bad Fur Day is one of the picks. The video serves as a good discussion starter, because who doesn't love to share their most favoritest things ever?
For me, my favorite retro boss would be the Mecha Dragon from (duh!) Mega Man 2. You are jumping across the floating blocks in Wily's castle when this beast pops up and starts chasing you down. You can't fight it just yet, so you keep hopping along and hope you don't miss a jump. Most all other bosses in the Mega Man series give you some clue as to the impending battle, like a chamber gate or Wily's logo in plain view. Not only does the Mecha Dragon appear completely out of the blue, you can't even engage it in battle straight away. No other Mega Man boss since has ever followed a similar structure.

Sigma - Megaman X
Quick Time Event done right
Other than that, I'm a big fan of Psychomantus and the cool out of the box thinking you had to do, and also the final boss from windwaker
In the spirit of some different ideas though, I'll submit the final boss of UN Squadron. Amazing...
What other boss has such a big ego that it sings its own silly theme tune throughout the entire battle?
Also, the GMP is my favourite because I have a thing for ridiculous toilet humour, and I still see the concept as being very ballsy.
Best boss fight ever in the entirety of video games ever.
List done.
Magus - Chrono Trigger
YWHW - Shin Megami Tensei II
First is, The Dark King from Mystic Quest. While I know a lot of people don't care for this game, one thing I hope we can all agree on is its awesome soundtrack. The music which played while fighting the Dark King, more or less made it for me. That and the fact you were fighting him on like the edge or the universe or something, after he revealed the prophecy was all a lie that he made up. Bad ass.
Second is Magus. In terms of Atmosphere I can't help but feel it has some of the best in any game. That build up, that walk, and that awesome music that plays at the right time.
Kefka and Mother Brain are my top picks.
May not be retro, but ALL bosses in MGS4. My god, this game was a masterpiece. Laughing Octopus, Raging Raven, Crying Wolf, Screaming Mantis, and the old men fight, Liquid Snake... Holy FUCK, were these bosses some of the, if not the BEST and MOST memorable bosses I've ever fought in any video-game to date (IMO, and note that I haven't played EVERY classic game yet). Fighting a camouflaged boss; an enemy flying in the sky around a tower at night; trying to beat all the FROGS around trying not to get detected while surrounded by snow and in addition to that, trying to non-lethal a freaking mechanical wolf; a Beauty controlled by Psycho Mantis, FROGS everywhere in the area coming to shoot you, and when you finally make the boss calm down, you have to grab her own dolls to defeat her; and the big baddie itself, a fight to the death between 60+ years old farts... MGS4 had really unique and diverse bosses, and is my favorite game to date.
gaming just hasn't struck a chord like that with me in a very long time. while most villains merely provided a larger obstacle to overcome, kefka became a thorn in your side. except that it wasn't a thorn, it was a large metal pipe and that pipe had to be dealt with in the worst way possible.
either that or that dick that took my girlfriend in river city ransom.
(cool episode, love screwattack btw)
For me I would say, damn I dont remember his name; there was a gigantic optional boss in Castlevania SOTN, in the second part of the game (the reversed castle thing) oh man that stuff (kind of dragonish stuff but I dont remember well) was freaking huge, so big it was like 2 screens high. And if I remember correctly there was a trick to beat that bad ass, an item you needed to have or else you wouldnt be able to even deal damage. Damn that was awesome.
Giant Bowser in Yoshi's Island is another good one too.

I remember Baby Boswer scaring the f*&k outta me when he grew and started to rush the screen in Mario World 2.
Kefka - FFVI/III
And the final true boss from Demon's Crest, that bitch was hard.
I guess those are some of the bosses that made me go HOLY SHIT when I first saw them. Godzilla in Revenge of Shinobi was incredibly huge and awesome so I give him #1 for now. I know there are so many I'm forgetting, though...
Also, the huge metal dragon-thing in Strider. Gotta respect a boss so big it can't even fit on the screen.
Nuff said.
Lavos (final boss) - chrono trigger
I have to say I feel so much differently about the bosses in mgs4.
You never really get to connect with the beauties like you do the bosses in mgs1. Which was a big part of why those boss fights meant so much to me. Drebin saying some things after you kill them just wasn't the same.
Not to say some of those boss fights weren't great, Rex vs Ray, and the final battle with ocelot were great.
But it's might just be me. I have done the same with all the other metal gears. Since none of them have lived up to mgs1 for me. Do I still love the series? Oh he'll yeah, but sometimes I might be unfair. Since if you ask me what a perfect game is MGS is my answer no doubt.
Runner up is Bowser and the Koopalings from Super Mario World. Such awesome fights.
I don't know PC games from that era too well, so I'm not sure of any others.
2nd up would the damn elephant squid in Super Metroid. Thing scared the hell out of me...
