Scratch features a turntable controller, characters more hip than you photo

Honestly, I don't know much about Genius Products upcoming PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game Scratch. I do know that the game will be played with an turntable-style controller, and will feature over 60 licensed and original hip-hop songs. I also know that Quincy Jones Jr. (the son of mega-producer Quincy Jones) is involved in the game's production.

That's about it, really.

Today, we received some new screenshots and information on two characters that will appear in the game, DJ Travis and DJ Sakura. Travis is a skater-type, Sakura is a bubbly, fashionable Japanese chick. This information isn't as important as how the game will play (it looks a bit like other peripheral-based music games) or how we'll use this turntable controller (which is being designed in conjunction with Numark), but it will have to do.

The official Scratch Web site promises that it will launch in 45 days from today. I'm not good with the mathematics, but I think that puts it sometime in February. We'll be waiting.

Ok so its a beatmania ripoff without the japanese pop music? I guess their trying to cash in on guitar hero fame.

When I first got into DJing, they were on some Numarks...

Anyway. Sounds interesting at least. Though, I was never really a fan of Beatmania. From the looks of it, they seem similar.

Regardless, I need to see the setlist and the peripheral looks like first.

Konami had their chance, but they blew it without a lot of songs that Joe Anygamer who doesn't download game soundtracks (his loss) listens to. The bulk of the Guitar Hero (and Rock Band) tracks are songs everybody loves and can get genuinely psyched to strum the notes to on a plastic guitar; everybody plays it and ropes their friends into playing it, which means big, big sales. I imagine Scratch's tracklist'll be similarly US-geared for the same reason.

Konami's sacrifice wasn't in vain, at least... we did finally get a cheap Beatmania controller out of their experiment.

If this dissuades Activision from making "DJ Hero," I'm all for it.

@Atastysammich

Well the american beatmania that was released for ps2 was a pile of garbage. At least it came with a japanese beatmania controller but still, the songlist was shit. The only way to play beatmania I think is in the arcade which is damn near impossible to find in the states anymore as it is. Because the ps2 controller in my opinion is a pos as well. I suppose if they improve upon the beatmania controller, with some more well known tunes... and I'm not talking about fucking american pop music, I swear to god I will kill someone if I see britney spears' "poison" on this.

I'll buy this if it is in any way based on the epic 2001 documentary of the same name withthe legendary Q-Bert in it. Doesn't seem like it though.
