Scott Pilgrim vs. The World game announced photo

Are you a fan of Scott Pilgrim? If not, you should be -- it's a funny, well written graphic novel series filled with clever video game references. You should also be excited that, this afternoon, Ubisoft announced they are making a video game to coincide with the upcoming movie.

Unfortunately, the press release says almost nothing interesting beyond the fact that a game is, in fact, being made. The vast majority of the release is them trying to pimp the movie, and blathering on about how formerly awesome Arrested Development star turned pretentious indie "I'm too good for everything" überdouche Michael Cera will star. Totally neglected, other than a brief mention, are the more awesome people in the movie like Mae Whitman (a.k.a. Ann a.k.a. Egg a.k.a. Plant a.k.a. Her?).

Sadly, we don't know what platforms the game will be released on, what kind of game it will be, or if Cera and the other cast members will provide voices for the game. All I really learned was that the game is set to release alongside the movie in 2010, and that NBC Universal is 80% owned by General Electric and 20% owned by Vivendi. EXCITING! Still, Scott Pilgrim is pretty neat, so even Michael Cera can't bring this announcement down.

The inevitable "I'm not going to do the second movie or second game because I don't want to be typecast/I'm too good for this now" statement, however, will probably be more of a buzzkill.

They'd do well to make this a 2D sidescroller with RPG elements - based on the graphic novels Maybe even a "character setup" screen that emulates School - with Scott neglecting to take Skateboard proficiency after Grade 5.

A nice lil piece of DLC that would be!

A retail boxed 3D graphics piece of licenceshovelware is what this amazing property does NOT need.

I'm not 100% sure... but I think you have something against Michael Cera.

Oooh. So Bryan Lee O'Malley wasn't just teasing us in his Twitter.

At least Cera's playing something other than the awkward teenager with romance issues.

You heard the man: YES! The graphic novels for Scott Pilgrim are awesome, so I'm kinda pumped for this movie, and now for this game. Hopefully the game is styled like the novels.

Cera initially turned down the Arrested Development movie. He has every right to despise him.

the arrested development movie is a bad idea. if the movie is a fan-service it'll fail like the TV series did... so in order to profit they're going to have to reach a wider audience which = totally selling out their true fan-base.
and i like Michael Cera.

If they had said they were making a game of the books I would be totally up for this. As it is, this makes me sad. I am not down with the whole games based on movies based on books thing.

As a side note, I heart Scott Pilgrim forever.

They should make the game based on the comics

Well this announcement is as Ann as the nose on Plain's face.

I think I love you.

Also, I'm not sure what to think of this news tbh.
I love the comics because of the fact I can relate so much to Scott. And the film is promising with Edgar Wright at its helm. The problem is, as mentioned, Michael Cera, so I won't reiterate what's been said.

I would much prefer the game to be based on the comics rather than the film.
And I'm pissed that Knives Chau's dad is not in the film. Fail.
Although Jason Schwarzmann as Gideon is a great move.

It'll be interesting to see Micheal Cera playing a character that isn't just a total bitch. But for looks, he really is probably the best choice out there. At Comic Con NY I was standing in line to get Brian Lee O'Malley's autograph and someone came up and said "Who made a comic about Michael Cera?!" At the time, I lol'd.

I'm not loling now.

@Dyna Geek: it's about a twentysomething Canadian slacker who falls for an American girl with 7 evil-ex boyfriends whom he must defeat to keep dating her. I wouldn't say that it's full of video game references, so much as it reads like a NES game. There are nods to everything from River City Ransom to Earthbound.

I'm glad, because O'malley has actually said that if they did make a game he'd want an actual good good game as opposed to a shitty movie-tie-in game.

I'd like to see it done in the style of the pixel art on the back of Volume 5, maybe downloadable through XBLA and PSN.

they were shooting the film around the corner from my house for about two months. the sets looked good and cera is as big a douche in real life as you'd expect him to be.

i love the books and since the movie is (from what i've heard at least) the first two books smashed together the game should be fun. that is of course based on the assumption that the game will follow the movie.

Great! I just hope O'Malley gets say in what the game is like so we don't get "Scott Pilgrim: The End is Nigh". And I agree that Michael Cera is a bad choice for the role. An unknown guy would be much better. Cera is just too recognisable.

But anyay, yes. If you like good comics, video game references, and general surreal absurdity, READ SCOTT PILGRIM. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

My brother was offered a job as a developer on this game by Ubisoft, but for the sake of anonymity let's just say his current employer screwed him over and wouldn't let him accept it. Too bad, because this was his dream project. :(

I love the graphic novels. I have high expectations for the movie, but I hope for this game that they actually use the original art style, instead of having a bunch of uncanny-valley likenesses of the actors.

Cera's been on board roughly since this project was first announced about two years ago.

Also, I have complete confidence that he'll do just fine with the role.

Additionally, Edgar Wright knows what he's doing.

I hope it's stupid and 2d and awesome like the back of v5.

I feel like if a Scott Pilgrim game isn't made right, it'll be way more disappointing than adaptations of other stuff, which don't have as videogamey source material, so it's not really unexpected.

If he's too good for everything, then how is he doing this movie/game?

Also, I didn't know GE actually owned NBC. I thought that was just a joke fabricated by 30 Rock.
