Fail.
These are actual cards. The difference here is that you get the cool, HD visuals to go along with it. If the card game is tight (and I don't know anything about card games), why wouldn't you want to try something new?
I think it's a cool idea, personally. Since I first saw the live demo at E3 2006, I've been impressed by the game and its tech. Granted, I might never play it (unless I end up reviewing it), but that's another story.
Ya but your spending like $70 for the game, and the booster pack (and for some reason a camrea?)
When you could go ahead and get a Magic booster pack for $10 then spend the other odd $60 on Magic card packs at like $5 a piece and by the end of it have A LOT more cards then if you had bought that game. It just seems like anyone who actully wanted to go ahead and collect cards would NOTICE this and go the smart route with their money.
From what I understand, this game works by you basically "scanning" the card you want to play under the camera, right?
What's to stop people from making copies/printing out the cards, instead of blowing money on booster packs and whatnot?
And Neonie, go take your whining elsewhere.
The fact is, $70 won't even get you in the door in MtG. You're looking at a $1000+ investment to have more than 3-4 decks worth playing. Then you have to cycle those decks and buy more and more cards to keep up with the current metagame (which changes every 4 months or less.) God forbid that you want to play something other than type 2. Then the values and rate of decks changing goes through the roof up to $4000+ per deck with single cards costing over $500. There is no such thing as a smart route with Magic excluding Magic Workshop and Apprentice. Hell if you play MTG:O you're looking at paying hundreds just for data. Chances are this game won't be as wildly popular as Magic so the prices on individual cards won't be nearly as rediculous. Given the limited market I would be supprised to see any non-promo/fetch cards going over $10. I know it seems like I'm down on magic, but that's far from the case. I've participated in a few major events, and I enjoy the game quite a bit. I would just never recommend it to someone on the basis of "the cheaper route to get into card games." I say that as someone who could afford a decient car were they to sell their Magic cards.
Hm good point, but I'm sure there are still other routs to go as far as card games besides magic that would be cheaper.
Other then that I seem to be in "check"
WTF are you talking about with $1,000+? You are on some bad drugs.
@Neonie
They are actual cards and the camera scans them (data chip, upc..who knows) and brings them up on the screen so you can actually see battles and characters. This sounds much better than laying cards down and stating damage done, you actually get to see it in action.
Oh and wasn't there supposed to be like some sort of stand for the camera?
Also, Cheers!
No, not drugs, I just don't play casual Magic. Actually it's quite the opposite; I used to be involved in the high end tournament Magic scene. Yes, you are correct that you can play casual magic for the price of a starter deck. Sorry I didn't even consider casual Magic due to the fact that most of the magic community tends to ignore it. I should have said, to play with anyone who is a serious player. To be honest Magic was more fun back when I played casually. After you become more involved, it all boils down to math and smart reads. While that's great for competition, most of the imagination that made it fun is gone at that point.
I will admit, i'd rather see it on 360 or wii though... MS would need a decent IP to go with it though... piniatas would not interest me... maybe something halo based... I'd be more likely to play a halo card game than a halo RTS(unless it was on PC) Like someone up above me said... camera card game+pokemon = poverty for all
also, for shitty packaging, i prefer a good sharp utility knife to scissors... it does the job better, you just have to be careful to not cut your hands off in the process.
PS: all this talking about card games on consoles has me thinking... when was the last time we got a new deck for UNO... I liked most of the special ones they had... I was hoping we would see a free halo themed one as halo advertising or something..
You wouldn't have to worry about fake cards in same screen play because... well, it's right there.
But online games are a little different. The game tracks the cards that are in your deck and digitally shuffles and draws them for you. You have to then look through your physical deck for the card that the game says you have in your hand and play it.
It's a hassle, but it's the best workaround to Online play, where cheating can most certainly be an issue.
And I'm fairly certain the cards have an unreproducible barcode or something (hologram?) to prevent reproductions.
Obviously the developers took care into making it hard to cheat. Pretty much everything you thought could happen as far as cheating, they have some preventative measure in place. Add in the fact they'll probably put out patches to correct anything that isn't working properly.
I hope so at least...
1. Will the cards be available in local hobby shops?
2. Is there single-player capability
3. Can you earn NON-Material cards to play with in game.
4. This brings about a lot of cheating seeing as how someone can just pick a card from their deck IF a turn based 1 draw per turn is a basic rule.
On a better note: Freakin sweet, can't wait to try it out!
Y'know, if they wanted to, current card games like yu-gi-oh and magic could get in on this in the future. Sure the current cards couldn't since they were not designed to have what ever is used by the camera to detect them, however, newer generations of cards could have the chips or whatever put into them. It would even give them an escuse to rerelease the old cards just so you can get them for the game... many current players might not like needing to bascially start all over (though they can always choose just to keep playing like they normally do), but newer players will be utterly thrilled. Hell, part of the work for making such games is already done since my cards have already been turned into 3D models for other card based video games (though they might want to update them for PS3).
@Raidensolid
1)Seeing as wizards of the coast is handling the card end, it is VERY likely
3)Doubtful, if they were gonna give you non-material cards to play, then there would be no point in making trading cards to begin with...
looks fairly fun actually... then again, I was a fan of PSO episode 3, even if it didn't get much of my time. It is one of those games that I would like an excuse to go back and spend some time with.
I'm actually surprised to see a game like that getting a western release... EBgames' website says January and only $40. Microsoft seems to be doing better about getting games released globally lately... here's hoping that I'll get a chance to play Operation darkness and maybe even oneechanbara vortex next year too
And if none of you have seen the video feeds for this game, check them out.

The one where the man summons a dragon and pokes at it - and it reacts, on-screen by rearing and hissing and whatnot - is amazing.
The replay value of this game should be incredible as well. I imagine there is a campaign mode of sorts too.
Very, very excited for this game. Already pre-ordered.
Cheers,

I never played and never tried so it's mind blowing to me. I'd just want the HD camera really not the game, not my thing, I think. Never tried those type of games.
Perhaps they have other bundles in mind. Singstar has potential to reach a wider audience if it was bundled with a camera as well as microphones.
