Science, b*tches! The Periodic Table of Controllers photo

You knew someone would do it eventually, but it was merely a question of when. Enter Flickr user Pixel Fantasy, the table you see above is an ongoing project that meticulously maps out everything you've ever played a game on (handhelds included). You can scrutinize a bigger version here, if you should so desire.

I wonder if Thinkgeek is paying attention to this right now, because one look at this thing and all I can think is that if you made that into a giant poster it would be an instant bestseller. Of course, the artist will likely want to finish it first ... but talk about the potential to earn cash! It's both nerdy and classy. Doesn't get much better than that!

It's missing like 57 elements.

Wow...that's just...wow...

Is it just me, or am I not the only one who would want the finished product on a t-shirt.

Cause, for me, that would rock. Especially if you go into a Chemistry class with it on...or an arcade. Whatever works.

This "Periodic Table of <inserthere>" meme is already getting stale.

I saw a "Periodic Table of A-Team" the other day...All we need is a "Periodic Table of the Fonz" before this officially jumps the shark.

Here comes the Chem nerd!

They should have organized the "families" together, e.g. all gameboy control scheme as the Actinides.

Otherwise awesome.

And periodic tables are OBVIOUSLY a great way to organize information

Wouldn't it make more sense to have an evolutionary chart showing how input controls adapted to survive?

You can see how Nintendo influenced the industry, first with the NES control er and its D-Pad + two button configuration, then the SNES with a 4 button layout and shoulder buttons, and finally the N64 with the analogue stick. The Wiimote has already been "copied" by Sony and I imagine future consoles will have some of its features.

How many more generations until this is finished? It's kind of hard to imagine. Also, I guess he doesn't count the iPhone. It would be a pretty bland element with nothing on it but one button.

last time I checked, the iPhone isn't a game controller or a gaming device hence the word "phone" in the name...So what the heck would it be on here? or even mentioned?

This makes me angry. if you're going to go to the lengths of this poster, at least label the fucking Groups and Periods. Otherwise it's not a periodic table, it's just a table.

It's like the 1992 art piece, The Great Bear which mapped things onto the London Underground map. At the junctions where two lines crossed, whatever was there only fitted with one of the lines, not both.

Damn kids. Get of my lawn!

Because the iPhone can play some pretty badass games on it. Hey, look at that, there's even reviews for said games on this website! Wow!

The games are mediocre at best and shouldn't be included in a periodic table of controllers, I don't think the general public say to themselves "Hey I gotta get myself an iPhone system, there are some mad games on it"

This is neat, but they don't seem to be organized by anything other than date. It would have been neat to have them actually show similarities to others in their groups.

I personally prefer the controller family tree thing, I wonder where that is now...
