Sci-fi fans rejoice! Ender's Game confirmed in the works photo

Way back in June 2007 (in internet time, that's actually three lifetimes,) I wrote about some juicy tidbits that science fiction writer Orson Scott Card mentioned in regards to a possible game based on his Nebula award winning novel Ender's Game. If I thought I was excited then, it paled in comparison to the reaction I had upon seeing my inbox today.

As much as I would love it if the game took on the full storyline of the novel, its been clarified that that won't be the case, and that's probably for the best considering how internal much of the story development is. The game will focus on the memorable Battle Room and is actually being created solely for digital distribution by Chair Entertainment, who also aided Card in the making of Advent Rising.

N'Gai Croal over at Level Up was kind enough to share with us his interview with the founders of Chair, Donald and Geremy Mustard. When asked about the details of the game, the brothers had this information to offer:

"Our main objective is to create a game that remains authentic to the books and offers an exciting gameplay experience for all levels of gamers, whether they are longtime fans or new to the "Ender's Game" series. Our team will be working closely with OSC so that everything from the way the characters look, to the different uniforms of the teams, to the Battle Room itself is authentic and helps to really bring the universe to life for gamers."

While the excitement is high, so is the worry -- Ender's Game has been an integral part of many a childhood, and the fear is always there that the game could do a poor job of capturing whatfans most loved about it. Still, I remember thinking when I read it that if the Battle Room was real, I'd want to spend a lot of time there, since as a kid I envisioned fighting in there myself. My hopes are high for this one.

Hit the jump for the legal talkings and such.

[Thanks N'Gai -- you made my day!]

CHAIR ENTERTAINMENT GROUP SECURES INTERACTIVE RIGHTS TO ORSON SCOTT CARD’S BESTSELLING ENDER’S GAME SERIES

First-Ever "Battle Room" Video Games to Bring Classic Literary Series to Life

Salt Lake City, Utah – January 29, 2008 – Chair Entertainment Group, an independent video game production company and creators of the award-winning Undertow, and bestselling author, Orson Scott Card, today announced their partnership to create the first-ever video games inspired by the legendary "Battle Room," featured in the beloved literary classic, Ender’s Game. Ender’s Game is an award-winning, international bestseller and one of the most popular science fiction novels ever written.

Under the terms of the agreement, Chair has obtained the exclusive rights to develop Ender’s Game "Battle Room" video games across all next-generation consoles, handheld platforms, and PC. In collaboration with Orson Scott Card, Chair will begin development later this year with the first offering expected for release via downloadable platforms.

"I have been a huge fan of Ender's Game since I was ten years old, so it is a true honor for our team to be entrusted with creating the first video game inspired by this classic story,” said Donald Mustard, creative director at Chair Entertainment Group. "Our goal is to create an authentic Ender’s Game experience that delivers awesome gameplay and can be enjoyed by both longtime fans and gamers new to the series."

"From the moment I started working with Donald Mustard and his team at Chair, I knew that these were the guys I wanted to do the first Ender's Game video game,” said Orson Scott Card. "It's not enough to slap the Ender's Game name on just any game--it has to be exciting, memorable, and endlessly replayable. Chair shares my understanding of this and I am looking forward to working with them to ensure the game is as authentically Enderish as possible."

In the fictional Ender’s Game universe, humanity is at war with an alien species known as the Formics, and Battle School is the training ground for the future leaders of Earth’s International Fleet. Taken at a very young age, Earth’s most brilliant children undergo a rigorous training designed to teach advanced military theory where strategic and tactical glory is won in the null gravity battles known to the elite students simply as the game! Through simulated war games and training conducted in the Battle Room, the children rise through the ranks of Battle School to become Earth’s only hope for victory.

The two parties previously collaborated on the Chair Entertainment Group property Empire, which the Company introduced in 2006 with the launch of an Orson Scott Card-written bestselling novel of the same name.  A feature film based on Empire is in development by Warner Brothers and Chair has future plans for video games and comic books based on the property.

Gamers and long-time Ender’s Game fans are invited to share their thoughts on Orson Scott Card’s popular website, www.hatrack.com, and the official Chair forums at: www.chairentertainment.com/community/forums/

I'm cautiously excited. This book was great, but man oh man if they screw this game up I'm gonna be pissed.

I don't think it will ever translate into a great game. Battle room? A bunch of kids flying around? Leave it as a book.

I'm sure there will be public lynchings if they screw this up. If they don't understand that, then they should. Word.

ZOMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've read this series about twenty times. I've read it more than LOTR trilogy. I hope this doesn't end up like Shakespeare Online. I almost put my heart through my racked flesh and tore my weary mind asunder with a blade most true when first I learned of its demise. I wonder how enjoyable this game will be when we all discover that, unlike the gifted children of the series, most that play will all act like a bunch of Bonzo Madrid's with especially nasty tongues and underdeveloped voice boxes. Hey, on a side note, has anyone read any of card's post-Shadow books? They seem intriguing, but I wonder which I should pick up first. Wonderful post, Colette!

GOOD GOD, PEOPLE!

Ender's Game is an overrated piece of mediocre sci-fi. It is absolutely not worth gumming up your perfectly good keyboard. For god's sake, read some Alastair Reynolds for a good hard sci-fi experience instead of this Orson Scott Card bullshit.

@Airborne - I'm glad you liked it! I've read all the Shadow books - if I had to recommend I would say read the Ender series in order if you haven't already and then proceed. What was the last book you read?

I don't care if the game sucks. It can't change the experience I had reading the book.

That being said, I hope it's awesome.

Sorry, I forgot that opinions could be wrong. You are absolutely correct. We are all imbeciles. Thank you for clearing that up

Also @ redgopher

There's candy in that busy street over there. Go find it.

I fear for this game. Advent Rising? Not so good.

You're all entitled to your opinions, but I don't care for Ender's Game or Speaker. I guess they're popular because of the story- it's admittedly interesting. What I see as Mr. Card's running thesis through the books leaves quite a bit to be desired:

"Your actions are allowable if you have a moral reason for taking them, no matter the consequences."

I'm not cool with that message at all.

I guess we disagree on Card, but DeLillo is incredible. White Noise is a haunting experience that I will NEVER forget.

Eh it was good, but I'd rather have a Death game from Discworld. Just think you could harvest souls and rescue cats all while being socially awkward! It's like Friday night!

If they make an "Ender's Game" game, I want it to be based on the Simulator on Eros, complete with the chain of command and encapsulation, and fully XBL enabled. That game would make me giddy with excitement.

This game makes me quite afraid, especially after playing Undertow and how lackluster that was.

God, they'd better not fuck this game up. I, for one, will never forgive them if they do.

I will anticipate terrible things so I may not be horribly disappointed when the game is terrible. Oh childhood, how do you put up with the vigorous rapings.

If you could just get the different Armies and have them fight in the battle room, that would be pretty cool, but more like a toy than anything. Maybe an XBLA-type title, something cheap. But I'm not pushing sixty greenbucks the wrong way over a counter to get what amounts to raygun paintbull. Not happening.

I'd far prefer the full storyline - even if it's just cinematics with a little interactivity. Basically, if I got Indigo Prophecy: Ender's Game Edition, I'd be happy. The story was passionate and feverish and vulnerable and perfect, and I'd rather have that than a fucking battle simulator, any day.

@Colette, I have read all of the Ender series, and the Shadow books, but he's got newer stuff out now unrelated to the Ender saga. My question was if anyone's read any of that, and if it's worth picking up. Shadow Puppets was so enjoyable and poetic. Please continue to be awesome at what you do.

@Kilgore Trout - Love the handle. Top notch. Vonnegut's Prospero =). Yes, my handle is in reference to part two of White Noise. I'd love to see a "Giants of Postmodernism" MMO. I'd want to be the first to find the Jameson Helm of Depthlessness. It would be very shiny and distracting.

Tales of Alvin Maker < Ender Saga, unless you're really into alternate histories. I am somewhat, and the books were still only a solid "wish I had libraried them instead".

They've been "making" the movie forever. This could be fun, but I'd imagine the controls for a full zero-G environment without any self propulsion could be tricky. And possibly very fun.

Card's "Empire" was a right-wing fox news POS which almost destroyed the goodness of the Ender series for me. They should go retro and make the battle room a pure puzzle/shooter action game.
