Sci-Fi Channel to launch a reality videogame television show photo

Shows where hosts actually talk about videogames seem like they're dying off these days. What happened to those? I liked those! Instead, we get fed reality/competition stuff like this new show coming to the Sci-Fi Channel, called "GameQuest."

In this terribly named show, 12 contestants go head-to-head in various videogame challenges in an effort to find the best all-around gamer in the United States. That doesn't sound too bad, but Reuters reports that "physical challenges that bring video games to life" are also involved. Yikes!

"With two out of every three American households playing video games, it's clear that this mainstream phenomenon is a perfect arena for the channel's agenda of broadening the brand while celebrating imagination," Sci Fi channel president Dave Howe said.

In the end, a final contestant will win a prize package that includes $100,000 and trips to future World Cyber Games events. GameQuest is set to premiere in the first quarter of 2009.

I hate reality television; probably even more if you shove video games into it.

i heard you only have to partake in the 'physical challenges' if the second contestant turns down the double dare.

The one in the middle makes me think of The Shining, in a bad way.

This may be unintentionally funny for an episode, but yeah, what CarlCastello said.

This is the kind of crap that makes me glad I don't have cable any more. Just Games, Internet, and Books.

Oh god... PHYSICAL challenges? You mean... like... getting up off my couch?? And going... OUTSIDE?? Exposing my pasty white skin to natural light? Walking distances further than my fridge? And outside the house? What if there are people out there? Who I might have to talk to!? I don't think I could do this. Truly, these brave individuals are taking on a challenge far outside the grasp of your average gamer. Oh, cruel Sci-Fi network, how can these gamers ever survive?

Wait... is that a GIRL? A girl who plays video games? Surely this must be fake.

It's gonna take a while for the "mainstream" to stop treating videogames as a novelty act, and this isn't helping.

I caught the ad for auditions on Craigslist last month. Wasn't feeling so hot that day, so I missed out on the inside scoop. On nothing.
