Sony trademarks 'Cloudsurf' photo

SCEJ’s recent trademark doesn’t confirm or convince us that paid PSN subscriptions are indeed on the platform creator’s “to-do” list, but it does make us think that Sony might be considering delivering digital content in a different way.

On December 28th, Sony of Japan trademarked the name “Cloudsurf” for use with just about anything with a chip -- from CD players to audio recorders, down to televisions, video cameras, PDAs, and “portable game machines.”

According to the filing, Cloudsurf will provide “game services” and “entertainment services” via the Internet. Games, audio, and video content as well as “electronic publications,” radio, and TV is said to be under its hood.

Paid PSN rumors got hot thanks to a marketing survey that teased a variety of features. The list included one-hour game trails, exclusive in-game content, and free access to the PSOne Classic store. The Cloudsurf trademark suggests none of this is happening, but trademarks are always delightfully vague.

If Cloudsurf sounds like the way you’re receiving content now, don’t panic: you’re correct. The reason for this trademark is beyond us at the moment. It might have been created just to screw with me on a Friday evening several days after the fact.

It could be Cloud storage too, mentioned in the survey. Either way, I'm happy it's not names like Qore or Qriocity.

CONFIRMED.

Actually, sources (wut) say it's a sequel to the Snowboarding mini-game in 7.

At first, with just the name, I hope for a remake of Cloud (the first game of the guy who founded ThatGameCompany).

Now I'm disapointed as hell. :/

@Enkido Is a pretty smart name, surprised myself, especially with the crappy names Sony has been tossing out for a while.

I think I saw something for this though, it's just the next step in their products sort of like how the new Sony Ericson can link up to your PS3 or the Bravia TV hooking up with your PS3. This is probably a way for all future Sony products to hook up.

I'm ashamed to admit that I opened up the comments for this page just to see if anyone else immediately thought of Kit Cloudkicker.

Actually, think about Skyfire for Windows Mobile, or Opera Mini for Android, they let you "Web Surf" using a cloud server to handle all the rendering and cpu processing and even gpu rendering. So Cloud Surfing could mean Web Surfing using Cloud Services to render the web pages, instead of the console itself. If you think about the way These game companies are trying to add these types of Cloud Services, it makes sense. If thats true, then they beat everyone to the punch at a great Trademark "Cloudsurf", it already exists, but sony got to name it first.

At first, I was half expecting it to be a sort of "Sequel" to Flower. Needless to say I'm quite disappointed.

Cloud is the worst "new" word since someone thought "podcast" would be a cool name for an mp3 on the internet. Fuck that shit!

While this000-965 might not be the freshest news out of the box, we here at Destructoid had not brought this little tidbit of information to you, the readers, attention yet. While running down what we know about Zelda Wii so far Zelda Informer listed the fact that the game had been in development for going on five years. That's before Twilight Princess launched and, if true, makes this Zelda have the longest development time in the series since Ocarina. We all know how well that turned out.

The information comes from an old copy of Game Informer, which came out in January of 2007. In the pages the magazine mentioned that a Zelda game specifically for the Wii has been in development for a year already. That means if it comes out at the end of this year it will have had around five years of development time and if it lands in 2011 it will be nearing six. With a development cycle like this and all the talk about change in the series we might be seeing a brand new take on Zelda come this Christmas (please, please, please).
