Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Killzone 2 has been surrounded by controversy for years since a trailer for the game was used to sell the graphical power of the PlayStation 3 to the masses at E3 2006. While Sony was screaming “ZOMG IN-GAME FOOTAGE,” gamers everywhere were yelling “STFU PRE-RENDERED CUTSCENE!” Ever since then, we all have been waiting to see if the real Killzone 2 could live up to the hype.

Well, if the above trailer from last week’s SCEE PlayStation Day in London is any indication, Killzone 2 may actually deliver. Yeah, it’s not as impressive as the more recent (partially in-game footage?) trailer from E3 2007, but I think it comes pretty close. Check it out for yourself and let us know what you think.

Impressed by the graphics? Bored because it looks like every other generic FPS out there? Annoyed by all the "in-game footage" talk surrounding this game? How do you think it stacks up to the E3 2007 trailer? Hit the jump for a comparison.

I thought the E3 '06 trailer was the pre-rendered one and E3 '07 was the first actual in-game footage.

Either way, if I had a PS3 I'd buy the game, but it's not going to make me want to buy a PS3. It's just not that impressive to me. I'll admit they've got some good looking models but when the textures are literally all gray, I have a problem.

Graphics don't mean a thing unless the game is up to snuff. Killzone 2 is a game that has been sold entirely on graphical power alone. They never talk about any interesting gameplay elements, any gripping story, or how Killzone 2 will stand out as an FPS. All they ever talk about is "in-game footage," a term that has become nothing but vulgar to me.

Eh, at least they've added red into the mix with grey and brown. Now they've got three colors!

Killzone sucked complete ass, and unless they managed to improve the gameplay as much as they did the graphics it's still going to suck ass. Anyway, sure, it looks pretty impressive to a point, however it looks incredibly boring and mediocre. People should just forget about this game, PS3 owners already have Resistance 2 to look forward to and that was far better than Killzone was. I don't even know why anyone looks forward to this game, expect maybe graphics whores because we haven't see anything noteworthy other than that about it.

@Trevor:

Killzone really wasn't that bad. It was a great game. The only problem was that the PS2 had a hard time handling the game and therefore had its share of lag problems. The core mechanics, story, etc was all great. I'd take Killzone over Halo anyday...which is the only reason people bought an XBox, right?

The first one was mediocre this one should be a lot better... Don't care too too much about the graphics on these type of showings but when I get a release date and some interesting info I'll get a little more excited.

WHAT? Can't you all stop sputtering out the same tired arguments? God dammit, all you fucking drama queens think if a game looks good then everybody involved must not be bright enough to be possibly thinking about gameplay. Those guys are smarter and more creative than any of the BLOGGERS on this site, and seeing you pompous failures think you know better is frankly hilarious.

What was impressive about that? They barely showed anything at all, and what was there was a monochromatic jumble of quick cuts and explosions.

Wake me up when they have a gameplay video, coz' I remember the last one they showed made the game seem boring as hell.

Wow, is it that time of the month already?

You know, I think the visual content of this game - strictly on a polygons/textures/shaders level - is somewhat above average. But the animation is what's blowing me away here. There's a brief shot in first person of the hero helping another soldier up a wall by the arm, and it was more convincing than any screenshot I've seen of this game.

Animation > Imagery, as far as I'm concerned.

And would someone please hand out some Midol over here?

Agreed, the animation does look pretty nice. However, I have a feeling that they waited this long in development just to snatch up the Euphoria engine.

I hadn't considered that, actually. Though I imagine they'd have put out a press release or something by now.

At this point, I don't really care how it plays. I have a shelf in my study dedicated only to games with superb animation or visual development, and most of those games are a great deal worse than Killzone 2 could ever be.

Somebody please explain to me the draw of this game, aside from the graphics. The original Killzone was one of the most overhyped, underwhelming, outright busts in video gaming (Halo-killer lolz!), and as Heretic earlier stated the propaganda for this game has hyped absolutely nothing in terms of gameplay or originality, and is gaining attention because of graphics alone.

It saddens me to see how many graphics whores there are in gaming. I remember a time when cutting-edge graphics were a luxury and side-dish to gameplay... not the draw to a game all by itself.

Killzone was fun. How many -stellar- fps' were on the ps2?
Just because it wasn't a "Halo killer" like the press would've liked you to think, doesn't mean it was bad. I get a little tired of seeing the comments and criticisms on games like this just because it's a PS3 exclusive.
I don't go trolling around on Fable2 posts talking about the ridiculous over promising, under-delivering of that game.

Assassin's Creed anyone? 'Tis sexy, but boring. But I'd bet you'd love to defend that game to your death.

I’m going to assume that Sony isn’t lying through their teeth this time, and that this really is in-game footage (not a hard assumption to make, since you can see crosshairs in the video). Of course, the game looks great graphics- and animation-wise. But will the gameplay be anything special? And will we see any colors other than gray, brown, blood red, and bright yellow (muzzle flash)?

Heavens to Murgatroid, everyone is getting so worked up about this! :)

I agree that nothing else is really known about this game besides the graphics, but that isn't really the point. Killzone 2 caused all that controversy back in the day for what people claimed were "in-game" graphics. I was just impressed that this new trailer looked pretty good. I am not saying it's the greatest thing ever -- actually, I think it looks a little bland overall -- but I think the developers should get a little credit for producing something that wasn't horrendously awful like most people were expecting.
It's okay to get a little excited over the visuals in a trailer and then form a more intelligent opinion once more info on the game comes out. It's no big deal.

That's all. :)

Exit, stage left.
