SCEA might want to spy on your emotions while you game photo

As spotted by Siliconera, Sony has filed a patent for software that aims to detect a range of human emotions with laughter being primarily emphasized. As you can see in the creepy sketch above, this data would be tracked through a microphone and camera hooked up to a PlayStation 3.

The application would know what you were feeling at any given moment by detecting specific body gestures as well as group interactions such as two people giving each other a high five. "Dude, did you see that sick headshot? Up top, broseph!"

Obviously, this technology could have a big impact on something as interactive and dynamic as videogames, but there's potential for SCEA to use it for movies, TV, and other multimedia. I wonder if it will be able to track anger, because more often than not that's my main emotion when gaming.

I need to start playing more relaxing games, I think.

Between this and the Wii Horse Riding patent I'm starting to think it's a requirement that all people in patent applications look creepy as fuck.

Uhm, you can unplug your camera and mic or not play certain stuff at all. You've got a choice. The comparison with 1984 isn't correct. Just saying.

It'd be great if it had a "dozing" detector, namely for grind-heavy RPGs.

Why would anyone pay for devices that only function for someone to monitor them?

If the point of all this is to entertain people, they should just distribute printouts of that picture.

The caption is fitting, I work at the patent office, and patents are my worst nightmare.

The patent art I've seen recently has been very creepy - I should have patented creepy art in patents.

Great. Now, when I play a (fictional) remake of Silent Hill 4 and guffaw at the burping nurses, my PS3 controller would send 1000 volts through my hands (coming soon via another creepy patent) so I could shut up and continue the game.
