Say goodbye to your social life and hello to Mass Effect photo

So, Mr. RPG fanatic, are you still looking for a reason to pick up an Xbox 360? Well, look no further than Mass Effect. If you've been paying any attention to this game at all, you would already know that it may very well be your next digital addiction.

BioWare's very own Ray Muzyka recently sat down with TeamXbox and revealed some delicious details such as Mass Effect's length:

I mean, it really depends on just how much you want to do on the uncharted worlds. I think it’s going to be about 40 hours or so for the main story, so it’s going to be a good-sized BioWare RPG just for the core part. Off the beaten path, there’s probably another 20 or 30 hours or so of stuff, or more, depending on how much you do and what order you do it in and all of that.

Up to 70 hours? It looks like we have another Oblivion on our hands. If all of that play time ends up being pure entertainment with great storytelling, then sign me up!

This is going to be like KOTOR x 10. I'm going to buy it even though I don't actually own a 360 it's my roommates. He'll just have to fuck off when he wants to play Gears.

I am so glad that they abandon tailoring their game length to casual players like they did with Jade Empire.

RPG's are becoming a natural console fit. Lying in bed with my wireless controller and a nice 32" HDTV set sure beats the CRAP out of hunching over in my PC chair staring at a 19" monitor.

Finally!! Space has never been done right in any game. Kotor might come close but I don't think travelling between solar systems and shit like that has ever been done well. With this one and two worlds coming out goodbye family i'll miss you.

I wonder how the diverging endings will affect the rest of the series. If I make a "bad" character, will that ending continue on through the sequels?

But seriously...can someone tell me how this is a RPG?

Not to rehash old debates, but if this is all on one disc (and nothign indicates otherwise) then we are really at the point where its OK to say that DVD9 is sufficient for this generation of gaming

Also about the game lenght and "solar systems"...unless they tell how how much you can explore in each "solar system" and how much level is on each planet, I think it is a bit hyped up. I mean there are plenty of adventure games that reach over 40 hours and they don't use "DVD9".
I mean how long does it take to load or "travel" from one solar system to the next?

Yes that last one seems to be nit-picking but this site seems to be recently swaying to one side instead of being subjective.

BD, in our defense, we're a blog, subject to the whims and biases of the gamers that write the articles. If we like a game, we're probably going to be more kind to it, and vice versa.

Not that I don't agree with you about a sense of objectivity, just remember that we're just guys (and gals) too.

Haha, I've been saying all along that this is most assuredly the game that will get me to buy a 360. I mean, yeah, Bioshock and Assassin's Creed and all, but without Mass Effect, even those other two likely wouldn't have been enough to convince me to finally get one. I really really hope this game is as good as the hype (of which there seems to have been surprisingly little, until now at least) and doesn't horribly stink up the 360. It's BioWare, though, and they have a great track record so far, for the most part, so I'm expecting good things.

@Orcist

The way they handled that in KotOR 2 was that you played an entirely new character who'd been mostly out of the loop during KotOR 1, and in a conversation early on with Atton, you discuss what the player character in the previous game did. By your dialogue choices, you decide whether the character was good or evil, male or female, etc. Atton would say something like, "*spoiler did such and such. Then he did this and that." And you'd have the choice to reply with something like "'He'? I though *spoiler* was a woman!" It did have an effect on the game overall, but it was pretty subtle and only came into play when people talked about the events of the previous game, which wasn't very often. It didn't seem like a very impressive way to do it, but I guess they couldn't count on every one having saves from the previous game for KotOR 2 to access or whatever, so I guess that's why they did it the way they did it.

@BlindsideDork

Unless I've been horribly mistaken all this time, this game seems rather similar to BioWare's previous games, like KotOR, Jade Empire, Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate, etc. All of which were RPGs. And all of which, with the possible exception of Neverwinter Nights, were awesome. The combat and such may be different (Jade Empire's was different as well), but the dialogue and character interactions seem to be an evolved version of that which was in all those other games. If you didn't like KotOR or Jade Empire, you probably won't like this game either.

Also, as to this game using "DVD9" or whatever, it means jack shit to me.

(Also, 70 hours for Oblivion? Heh, try doubling that. And I still didn't finish it.)

If you think it's hyped up now, just wait until we get closer to launch day. The BioWare guy that was interviewed said that Microsoft is going to push Mass Effect like they pushed Gears.

Yeah... the Oblivion reference confused me as well. Oblivion is far, far longer and more of a sandbox game then this particular piece of software seems to be based on the information currently out there. A new, shinier KOTOR? Maybe. Oblivion? Definately a different game.
