Say goodbye to online functionality in these EA games photo

Starting next month, EA will begin shutting down the servers for a number of its online-enabled games. Don't fret too much -- almost all of the affected games are either showing age or just plain aren't good. According to the company, they amount to "less than 0.3% of all peak online players across all EA titles."

Gasp! My 2:00 AM Lord of the Rings: Conquest and Madden NFL 09 (on Xbox, not 360) multiplayer sessions are soon going to be nothing more than a distant memory. Well, at least we were told a month in advance. I wonder if any of those Achievement sites will try to hook something up before the big day?

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

My wife still plays LOTR Conquest when I'm at work: and it's not really a bad game at all if you get to know the community. This sucks.

If they're not going to support online for more than 3 or 4 months (exaggeration), why put online in to begin with?

Well, at least it's no giant loss from my viewpoint. Still, [insert more in-depth complaint about how these should stay up forever if we're paying for Xbox Live].

I've stopped buying EA games purely for this bitch move, usually with their sports games.

One day the Cerberus network will be shut down and you can say bye to all that DLC you paid for

Amen. It's still another reason to get online competitive games on PC instead: years later, you'll be able to join in on dedicated/user servers.

What the fuck? Conquest hasnt been out for that long has it?

Also, I thought you meant Lord of the rings BFME 2 at first, and I had a mini heart attack. Sucks about conquest, but at least we still have BFME 2.

I'm not affected this time, but this is too bad for the reasons Hasney points out. Someday this is going to be a game I love, and all the DLC I've paid for will be nonexistent.

They better not ditch Battlefield 1943. I say that even though it's already as though they have ditched it (incredibly bad lag for everyone, occasionally).

The Cerberus Network was down yesterday morning and all my DLC worked fine...once you download the DLC, you don't have to be connected to use it. Now not being able to back it up (OR your save games) is a bit of an issue.

And the Cerberus Network is operated by BioWare, not EA (although BioWare are a part of EA, which is a point you could argue). The content's hosted on the BioWare Social Network so that would have to fold before anything would happen and due to the fact it's not that old I wouldn't expect to see it happen for a few years at least.

Somewhat odd that Conquest is being taken down though.

March 16, 2010 Online Service Shutdown

Def Jam for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360
Godfather for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360
Lord of the Rings: Conquest for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360
Mercenaries 2: World in Flames for PC
Need for Speed: Carbon for PlayStation Portable
Need for Speed: ProStreet for PlayStation Portable
Simpsons for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360
April 15, 2010 Online Service Shutdown

Burnout 3: Takedown for PlayStation 2
Army of Two for PlayStation 3 (Asia only)

Additionally, the shutdown of Xbox LIVE for Original Xbox consoles and games (scheduled for April 15, 2010) will retire online services for the following titles:

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat for Xbox
Burnout 3: Takedown for Xbox
Madden NFL 09 for Xbox

Was that really so hard that you couldn't have fit that in the article so that I wouldn't have to go to EA.com's website to find out everything that's getting shutdown. Instead of a vague...games people don't play/aren't any good statement.

Seriously though, how many people are playing Burnout 3 online anymore? Its a waste of money to keep servers up for stuff like that. Might as well use the servers for games that people are going to be playing.

@ Fetusmilk yea, tell me about it. playing timesplitters 3 on 4-player splitscreen is probably some of the most fun i have ever had playing a videogame.

@ Cartman dosent seem like it has been out that long at all. I think everyone is bitter that they are being forced to play as Frodo wielding a pebble versus a Imperial Stormtrooper with a plasma cannon. Why they decided to make LOTR conquest instead of a new Battlefront is beyond me.

People moaning about LOTF: Conquest shouldn't.

EA is a company, and running servers costs. What would be the point in keeping their servers running to function for a handful of people? Conquest sales were super lackluster, because the game was developed by the lowest-talent of Pandemic and handled with no QA. Overall a bug-ridden flop with generally poor reviews by both "professionals" and players.

I feel sorry for EA actually investing anything in that pile of fail.

Same thing goes for Mercs 2.

Somehow this makes me kind of pissed. How is it legally okay for them to do this when the game (LOTR: Conquest) for instance; is sold as having online MULTIPLAYER. If the game had the ability for users to have their own dedicated servers that would be one thing, but you buy the game expecting to be able to play it online. It feels like false advertising and IMO, not that it matters at all, they shouldn't be allowed to shut down the servers unless they: 1)Are declaring bankruptcy and going out of business or 2)Agree to not sell the games in question anymore and provide a full refund to those who currently own the game. What a bunch of horse****.

Does this mean that, in a few years, that nice copy of Battlefield 1943 I bought a few months back for my Xbox will magically become the most useless thing ever?
Wow. That's awesome.

Everyone saying "oh well LOTR Conquest sucked anyway" know that this is just the first step, and for those who payed for it and maybe liked it then EA should honor the sail.

The only big pile of fail here is EA.

They're only just shutting down the PS2 servers for Burnout 3 now, wow, I wouldn't have thought anyone would still be playing, I don't even have a newt gen console and I moved away from Ps2 online longa ago? I loved playing that online, between it and Battlefield 2 : Modern Combat it made wading through the awkwardness of the PS2's online setup worthwhile. I'll definitely have to log on again for the swansong. Speaking of which, any idea if BF2:MC is still up, and is it possible to still get into a game with people in it?

As long as something keeps making money to support the servers they usually keep it going.

With game sales what they are (in general) it is hard not to cut costs where you can. Hell, I rather see things like this compared to layoffs.

Unfortunately it is the consumers who get the short end of the stick here.

@MPXenon:

Yeah, BF2 is still up for PS2, but from what I've learned, you can no longer sign up. It won't let you get past the Privacy Agreement in order to make a new account, so if you don't already have an account, you're S.O.L. You could still try, though.

@Xzyliac:

EXACTLY THIS.

If they hadn't used their own servers and just used MS's like the rest of the fucking world of publishers, the 360 games would still be up. But nooooo, EA needed complete control.

Even console games need dedicated servers. I really hope that one day there is an XLink Kai style workaround.

I completely agree with Manasteel88, and add it can be a hassle to follow a link especially when you're on destructoid via an iPhone. Not every article needs all the info that's found in the included link but this one in particular would have benefited from it.

but I did click the link...and posted the information so that everyone could understand it. I guess my opinion is that if Kotaku can do it and I can do it, Jordan Devore most certainly can. Otherwise he doesn't need to have the article on the front page.

I have never liked it when people post stuff in forums/blogs that have a link and some vague information. If I took the time to click on the article to read about it, then I only ask that somebody post some the information instead of me having to go somewhere else for it.

When you just put together a well thought out look at Criticosm (a site I never had to visit to understand what you were writing) and Jordan couldn't even copy paste what games would be going down, it annoys me.

I don't really care about all this beyond that, but its just a bit of professionalism I'm asking for.

I was going to include the full list of games, but it would have been getting too large to go above the fold. Then I was going to put it after the break, but remembered how people like to complain when we do that because it encourages extra clicks and more page views.

So really, there's no winning either way. In the future, I'll include the important info, if that makes you happy. But don't act like clicking a link is this horrible, day-ruining thing.

I didn't really care in the first place and just posted that in the hopes that a small update would happen to provide a full list. Its just a trend I've seen happen too many times on forums and blogs that it just irks me for some reason. Its like somebody has something important to say and then says go here to figure out what I'm talking about.

I had blown it off, then I was clicking through my comments saw an @manasteel88 post and had to respond. I didn't mean to come off angry (I was only trying to express my argument), but I just can't see a real defense of it.
