Sony has just announced a lovely Satin Silver PS3 for Japan. It looks like the one we've been seeing in pictures all this time, ever since the system's debut. This new one is a 40GB model, priced exactly the same as the other Japanese 40GB models: 39,980 yen (about $375US). Knowing that this is priced exactly as the other white and black 40GB models, you shouldn't be surprised to find out that the DualShock 3 isn't included. No one would buy the other two models if they packed it in, right? Speaking of the DualShock 3, they also announced a matching color release. Should you want to add one to your Satin Silver rig, you'll need to budget for another 5,500 yen ($52). Why do they wait so long to give us the colors? [Via Watch Impress]

What do mean, "us"? I wouldn't hold my breath for this being released outside of japan any time soon.
I'm more concerned about when the Dual Shock 3 comes stateside.
Or coming outside Japan ever for that matter :(
@Video_Cognito:
You should be able to import one from Play-Asia, I plan to get one myself when I have the cash. I hear they work fine with all regions of console.
No Dualshock, No backwards compatibility, no service.
Lol.
I predict Wii color explosion stupidity to erupt later this year
I also would like a DS3 for $44 from Amazon instead of $66 from Play-Asia. At least they're not wasting precious DS3s by bundling them with the consoles.

Get one. It's worth it. I'm finally buying PS3 games now that I have one.
A cheap(ish) sexy(ish) PS3 coming to the states? LOL, right. That shit stays in Japan. We'll get this version when Japan gets the PS3 Slim. Then we'll get that a year later too.
Sony you blows.
Great review DVD, I can't wait until they come over to the states. I'll be the first one to pick one up.
Looks retro
Fading Star put it nicely. WTF Sony. You just lost a sale!
but I want my normal, ps2 weight, jiggly pstriple controller now!
I am not buying a PS3 until Dual Shock 3 becomes the standard controller included. Fail.
The US rarely gets new console colors. The first colored PS2 we ever saw came out late last year even though there have been dozens in Japan between the fat and slim systems.
The US is just too big a market to keep multiple colors in stock from sea to shining sea.
It's the same reason we don't have a Club Nintendo program like Japan, why we get crappy pre-order bonuses, why our manuals are usually black and white instead of color, etc. etc.
I still haven't figured out why our box art always has to suck though.
WTF is with the comments both here and on Engadget that this silver color is "retro"? I like the silver color. Black looks slick but it's boring after a while.
However, I agree completely with Fading_Star. No Dualshock, no backwards compatibility ... this is nothing more than a profile 2.0-ready Blu-ray player.
It looks retro - like a PS1, surely we can all see this.
Black is colour of pure evil, much nicer.
Personally, i never gave a damn about the dual shock 3, i always turned off stuff like rumble and what-not... i'd rather get a controller cheaper than got one with rumble...
Keep churning out the same overpriced, under-featured SKU's, Sony, and i'll keep not being interested.
My great uncle's cousin's garbageman's sister works for Sony, and she sent me a real picture of a real green PS3. It's REAL! See?
Garbly Garbly! I'm angry at you sony for -insert useless argument here- no sale. Well I wasn't going to buy it anyway, but I'm super not buying it now!
lol @ brainderailment. Win.
They should release gray plasttic, now that would be retro
This would be awesome if I didn't already have a PS3 although if I didn't have one, I would surely pick up the 80gb instead of this one, so basically I'm still S.O.L. =*(
@Dale North: Not to be an ass, but it’s “separately”, not “seperately”. Don’t feel bad; it’s a common mistake.
Dammit! Accidentally hit the ‘Add Comment’ button.
Frankly, I like that the PS3 is black. It matches with all my other home theater equipment. They really need to bring that DS3 to America, though...
Garbly Garbly! I'm perfectly pleased with you Sony for -thrifting customers out of simple features that should be included with the system, but giving us the opportunity instad to buy these products seperately- I'm gonna buy three and give two to my friends! Well I bought one already anyway, but I can't pass up this mediocre offer!
Preemption: The 360 also should include certain features in the box (an HDD) but you'll notice that other, more basic (ie get you shit together already and include them Sony) features like HD and SD cables, consistent backwards compatibiliy (Sony really had this one pegged a year ago, but now...) and a controller that shows effort in design are included. This is very one sided of me, but I have to say that standard HDD is the way to go, Microsoft and especially Nintendo didn't meet expectations there. But c'mon, "The next generation doesn't start until we say it does," "You can finally play in True HD," except you didn't pack in the cables jackass.
One last thing: excluding the DS3 based on the precedent of SKUs released before the DS3 is pathetic and inexcusable. Nintendo slaughtered DS Phat sales, but it brought a much more capable system that you wouldn't feel self concious about next to the PSP for being so ugly. Now that the DS3 is out, it hould be stndard in all systems, period. I don't wanna hear from the people rationalizing Sony's rumble stumble. Of course you never liked rumble, Sony said it wasn't cool anymore. I await your snide replies, I'll be waiting at the foot of your pedastal.

Wow how many SKUs is Sony going to put out to rip off consumers before deciding to finally packing dual-shock 3 controllers with the PS3?
They're a buisness and they need to clearing out the remaining SIXAXIS controllers so they don't lose money on them.
PROTIP: Buy the DS3 separately and use the SIXAXIS as the crappy controller your friends use. That is unless you don't have friends and just complain about things on the internet all day.
Paystation 3.
In less shocking WTF news, PS3 still does not come with any HD cables.
Satan silver?
I'd think he'd be red and black.
I'm sure they don't have any DualShock3s yet because they still have a bunch of rumble-less controllers they can slap a new shell on.
"No Dualshock, No backwards compatibility, no service."
You forgot no HDMI cable and no good exclusive games.
@CryingTheAnnualKingo: Oh, shut up with that crap already. It’s old by now. A six-foot HDMI cable can be had for less than six bucks on Amazon, and the PS3 has plenty of good exclusive games. Just because you might not like what’s available doesn’t make it bad.
Black looks better.
No dualshock, no service.
I mean, there's no reason that the Dualshock 3 shouldn't be available stateside. There's even less reason for them to not pack them in with the 80GB console. Why not use the new version of the cheaper component to sell the on-the-way-out expensive component? I probably would've broken down and bought an 80GB if the fucking controller rumbled. I didn't realize how much I missed it until I played some GC games with a wavebird. No rumble sucks, no matter how you slice it.
And an HDMI cable in the box wouldn't be a crime, I mean, they can certainly get them for less than $6.
I'm glad I got the 60GB when I had the chance instead of waiting for the 40GB with DS3. I'm also glad that while I did buy the system, Sony has yet to make a profit on my purchase. They'll make a few bucks eventually, but only when Sucker Punch gets their new game out. Screw the crippled accessories!
The least Sony could do is give us a USB cable longer than 4 feet, and AT LEAST an S-video cable instead of this A/V crap. I can't play my PS3 while the controller is charging, and while S-video isn't HDMI, but it's damn close to component, and nobody is going to buy an overpriced Sony-branded HDMI cable, anyway. Now, DS3 is delayed some more... just because.
Okay, I admit that BC isn't as big as I thought it would be, and getting rid of it on the low-end machines was a good idea after all. The 40GB model is selling better than I anticipated. The system itself is really nice...
...but still, Sony... please... work on the accessories!
I think its a waste of time and money. v.v
I still think the white one looks cooler.
Maybe the best time to have launched this one would have been
before Christmas being after, It's almost as though they are trying to slip it in while no ones looking.
Games-asia have got some good bits,
http://www.games-asia.com/playstation3ps3console40gbsaturnsilver110v-p-3091.html
Well in any case my scanner, printer, notepad are all silver
so I guess if I get a Silver PS3 it would fit right in ;)
