Square Enix has been going all out in their recent ad campaign for the upcoming Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Earlier in the summer you could see a lot of these videos on their viral marketing website for the fictional Sarif Industries, but it appears to have been 'hacked' by the 'Purity First' terrorist group, and we apparently missed it... by about three weeks.
I'm really impressed by the dedication that Square Enix has to the marketing of this project, and the eerie parallels to the real world are both disturbing and exciting. In addition to the video series, the Sarif Industries website has been posting links to real cybernetics developments like an artificial hand that can feel, powering cybernetics with the mind, and a bionic eye that could restore vision. The fact that this stuff really exists and these are issues that we may have to deal with in our lifetimes has me more than a little excited to see how Deus Ex: Human Revolution will handle them.
Like I said to my friend, Eidos has the best feature of Square now. Square may not be able to craft a game anymore, but they certainly can make cutscenes and marketing.
@Volomon
I think the post is about the sarif website actually showing the results of the hack mentioned in the video. It actually is awesome if you've been to the website before and have something to compare it too.
Just got back from the website. A lot has changed, especially what you get from completing the hacking mini game. I think before this 'hack' you only got some pictures, now you get character dossiers. Pretty fucking awesome indeed.
I forgot this was supposed to be a reactionary terrorist group's video while watching it. Comes off as the game's message since I haven't seen anything else about Deus Ex yet. Hope there's some subtlety in the rest of the storyline as I don't think augmentation would be that bad.
Wow. Seriously, I haven't been wowed by a website since the old "Requiem for a Dream" website from years ago. I got lost in all of the content for hours, and the Lazarus guy DEFINITELY was modeled after Alex Jones, (shamelessly I might add).
I am so happy I reserved the special edition months ago. I cannot wait until Tuesday.
The video would've been even more powerful had they hired actors capable of more "realistic acting", i. e. the type that's harder to distinguish from real people talking in documentaries, for example. Only the brittish accent guy brought the style needed, with the others sounding unrealistically melodramatic, with the tone of voice and timing of so many TV series. I felt it broke the illusion that could've occurred otherwise, the illusion that makes one part of your mind go: Sh-t, this isn't real, is it?
Whatever, it's just a commercial - an impressive one, at that. I was just daydreaming of the potential, that's all.
The original Deus Ex didn't blow my mind like I'm told it should have. The reason is that once I had tried all that there was to do (hack stuff, crawl through vents, what have you...), the game could no longer surprise me for the rest of its duration, and I didn't get a kick out of hardly any of the stuff you could do, unfortunately.
However, something I DID appreciate was the uncanny feeling that the developers knew what the future would look like, given how old the game was when I played it one or two years ago. Also, the kind of bleak (cyber punk, I guess it's called) atmosphere of the world is something I won't say no to getting lost in again.
This latest Deus Ex game seems to bring both those good traits, along with an updated aesthetic. I'm sure it'll be a good ride.
im not into live trailers and so missed this one until now. but boy, that was awesome.. aways liked the augmentations idea and now this just put a doubt on me, can totally see companies fucking up their own clients
Oh Tuesday, COME! While this is absurdly old news that I enjoyed when it was first released... I loved watching it again. The advertising for this game is so stellar and please check out the official forums if you don't mind reading interesting stories and ideas.
