Sarcastic Gamer boycotts EA: Asks Jim Sterling for reinforcements photo

So, today our tips line has been absolutely inundated with emails from Sarcastic Gamer readers asking us to spread the word about their Battlefield: Bad Company boycott. Because I just got back from Cancun yesterday, have three games to review, and have generally been busy, I held off on posting about it until later in the day. Just as I settle down to start work on this post, however, the lovely Ms. Bennett sends me this:

Colette: lol, Jim

Me: What a f*cking coincidence. I was just starting to make our frontpage post on this.
It seems that Sarcastic Gamer has found my being too quiet on this issue unacceptable and has asked for my "loud and obnoxious voice" to help spread the word about the site's boycott. Sarcastic Gamer wishes to boycott EA because of its decision to sell guns as DLC in Battlefield: Bad Company. Because explaining it in further detail would require effort, I am going to let SG's Doc tell you about it:
As you know, EA has announced that it will sell additional guns for the upcoming installment in the Battlefield franchise, Bad Company. We, and tens of thousands of like-minded individuals, feel that despite EA’s assurances, this will lead to unbalanced play. We further believe that it sets a precedent for even more abusive DLC for fans of all game franchises. We have embarked on a boycott of Battlefield: Bad Company, and despite a lack of support (so far) from most major gaming outlets, have already enveloped thousands of gamers, who too are eager to stop this dangerous trend in its tracks.
We are definitely aware of Battlefield's proposed DLC, and promise to let out an almighty "WTF?" when Destructoid and EA next meet. We will most definitely share the concerns of our fellow gamers with Electronic Arts and do what we can to get to the bottom of this possibly nefarious scheme. Until then, let it be known that the notorious Destructoid community has now been made aware of Sarcastic Gamer's boycott and now know what to do if they disagree with EA's plans ... so FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STOP SPAMMING OUR TIPS LINE!

I'm going to boycott this game, but not because of the DLC but because Dice can't code a fucking game to save themselves. I've never seen a company ship such broken products before.

I haven't purchased an EA game in forever. I've been boycotting them since the whole, "We own the NFL!", crap. Although, I am trying to get the Orange Box from Goozex, does trading for used games count?

EA are the worst videogames company in existence, and are comparable only to NewsCorp in their immorality (read EA Spouse - any firm that treats employees like that should be censured forever). Their charm offensive is sickening because it insults the intelligence of gamers.

DON'T BUY EA'S PRODUCTS.

Consider me boycotting EA, if I absolutely must by an EA game at any point in the future, I will make absolutely sure to get it used.

Ugh...So we're boycotting a tried and true concept for MMO PC gaming now? Apparently no one has ever played a Korean made MMO-anything before.

I take it we're already boycotting Mythos and Dungeon Runners? What about WoW? I shouldn't have to buy an expansion pack to get new equipment...right? Should we also be burning our Rock Band drumsets because friends don't have free access to the Boston song pack we paid money for?

I don't see the problem with Microtransactions in games. It's the next step in a la carte gaming experiences.

Until you realize that you've paid $90 on a $60 game.

You want to know what sucks? The fact that there are fuckheads out there who will buy that shit without a second thought. It is a sad and pathetic money grab, but mostly sadistic fucking abuse of what DLC is supposed to be.

EA are a bunch of fucking whores though. They have been that way for a long time. Thats why they didn't include alt uniforms in Madden and NCAA football and were going to charge for them. But in their NBA and NHL games they had alt jerseys right out of the box. Since they had to compete for marketshare they couldn't fuck you over.

EA are filthy fucking slobs, and they are whore cocksucking twats. Did I say they were cunts?

Monthly subscription fee or DLC? Pick your flavor of gaming poison for online experiences. Don't like one or the other... move on to something else. There are soooo many games that it just boggles my mind. From old gems I missed to new ones I have yet to try. Getting hung up on one game failure = no good.

Happy faces everyone! Enjoy the good games, don't dwell on hating the bad ones.

->JamnOnTheOne: The big difference between this and those korean MMOs is that these games have a substantially hefty initial outset fee, whereas all those successful MMOs are free to download and free to play. There's also the fact that those games are far more dependent on amount of hours spent grinding than actual player skill. The battlefield games are meant to be entirely about who is the best player(or perhaps team) on a level playing field. Having some guns available only to those who can afford it utterly undermines that.

Seeing as these guns are clearly already in the game before it's even been release. This is just EA making you pay for things that you already possess, just are locked to you. The big difference between this and an expansion pack, or rock band DLC, is that this puts a premium on adding very little to a game. If blizzard came out with a WoW expansion that did nothing but add a few new weapons, that you actually had to pay for, there would be just as much outrage. Bear in mind that blizzard are constantly freely(apart from the subscription free) updating the game with brand new content, expansions are reserved for extremely significant changes.

There's nothing wrong with DLC as long as they're a decent value proposition, but paying for something that should just be in the game anyway is wrong any way you slice it.

I wasn't planning on playing it anyways, but you've certainly got my support just based on the DLC premise. There's a time and place for DLC, and this isn't it.

How can you seriously charge for guns, I just like don't understand it's like buying a car and then the dealer runs in rips off 2 wheels and goes ya 100 bucks each.Ya sorta like that...sorta ok so bad example but you get the point.

I'm really rather cynical about the whole DLC thing anyway. Downloading additional content is by no means a new idea and has been common practice on the PC since the internet came around. The concept of having to pay for it is somewhat more recent though.

I'm fine with paying for additional content that expands on the original game and introduces new storylines and the like, stuff that actually adds value for the player.

What I think is a pisstake is the fees for additional maps or other throwaway additions. These are worth nowhere near what the company make off of them.

I say it's high time MS/Sony fully opened up consoles to user created content for games instead of locking people out to create a kind of false economy for this stuff. I guess they prefer wallet-raping their customer base though.

@Timmeh:
While I agree with companies make far more than they should for maps (10 bucks for 3-4 maps is fucking ridiculous) I don't think they shouldn't get anything. CoD4 and Halo 3 basically force anyone who enjoys the game online to pony up 10 bucks for content that isn't nearly worth it; but due to the user base they can ram their cocks in deep and hard.

This whole guns thing is way petty. I didn't mind dropping 5 bucks for a RS3 map pack, because I got 4 maps and some new weapons together. But they way these companies are allowed to price this stuff is bad...and in some cases (like GoW actually forced to charge for it by MS. I don't believe they didn't, fuck them they lie too much).

I actually started to make a cblog about this (map packs and prices) about 10 days ago. I had a power surge and lost what I wrote before I could save it, and there was too much to re-write it.

#i guess I'm just spoilt by over a decade of PC gaming. When you're used to downloading new maps virtually every time you connect to a TF2 server for example (and even have maps added in patches here and there), or picking up multiplayer total conversions for likes of the Source/Unreal engines it's kind of a shock to have someone tell you to pony up for extra maps.

I just think denying people the ability to share their own content is darn greedy considernig consoles are pretty much just subsidised PCs nowadays anyway.

Similarly I was tempted to make a blog post discussing DLC but then forgot half my arguments and decided to go back to lurking in the comments sections like I always do :P

I agree they shouldn't be so iron fisted with user created content, but that would cut the revenue for console DLC considerably. If they set up a map pack for DLC, once someone got it, it could be re-done using a map editor and released for free. So I think that's the biggest reason...Even though they could put out a limited map editor.

I never really played PC games. I have a few RTS games, and have Dll'ed a few more. But for me the notion of getting really great user created content was unknown territory for me. If I could get over my hatred for a M/KB for games, maybe...

I don't even mind paying for stuff. But I'll be mother fucked before I get nickled and dimed like this. I heard this game was great from someone playing an early build of it. But after something like this, I could give a fuck about it. I'll play Rainbow and my sports games. I ain't buying the CoD4 maps for 10 bucks, and fuck Halo 3...at the very least they release the maps for free later on. I can't say that's a good thing, or a fuck you to people who paid for it.
