Sand dumped all over NYC in the name of Wii Sports Resort photo

In an effort to promote the forthcoming release of Wii Sports Resort, Nintendo spent a bazillion dollars turning part of New York City's Time Square the game's fictional setting, Wuhu Island.

Leading up to the event, Nintendo issued about fourteen press releases, to make sure no one missed that it was happening. We didn't -- we sent Samit, our resident NY, who we haven't heard from all day long. Maybe he's drowning in sand. Or having too much fun. We'll find out soon, as we all eagerly await his coverage.

These pictures issued by Nintendo give you a good idea of went on, though. Of note, Nintendo's vice president of Corporate Affairs Denise Kaigler stands by to make sure actor Chace Crawford doesn't pull a muscle while playing the fencing game. A mother tried to stop a child from drowning itself in the wading pool. A bunch of people got lei'ed. Get it? Like they got "laid"? Hah!

We have a full reviewed of Wii Sports Resort on it the way, delayed by a shipping error that had the game landing at our doorstep today... instead of last week. But based on the time we've spent with it so far, we think Nintendo might have another hit on its hands, with or without the defacing of Time Square's Military Island.

First, Chad's hands-on got me all excited, and Giant Bomb sure seems to like it. I'm in for the swordfighting alone. I'll be looking forward to the review and Samit's coverage.

Wow. This is going to be huge, eh?

Hopefully, developers can come away from the sales for Resort under the assumption that a whole bunch of people have the Motion Plus Accessory, and just start developing as if nearly everyone has one.

Aside from really being excited for the game itself, I'm looking forward to what else could come from the proliferation of Motion Plus

It's a great game and all, but sheesh, all this just for it? Why not have something of this calibur or greater when Galaxy 2 comes out. Bowling is so much harder with the Wii MotionPlus, I used to be able to get strike after strike but that's no longer the case.

Yeah, I know I'm gonna get this for the swordfighting alone, as are most people. XD

It's every guy's non-sexual fantasy to hack things up with a sword.

Samit is alive!

Nintendo's going all out to promote this bad boy. I suppose it makes sense since sales are still good but not as amazing as they have been in the past, and this will surely invigorate interest in the expanded audience. They couldn't pick a better spot to gain a huge amount of attention and publicity either.

samit lied to me. he said they were selling wii sports at the nintendo store. i trekked all the way from brooklyn to midtown only to get a "oh yeah, we were earlier, but not any more" response.

i'm crying, samit. thanks.
