It's been a long time since we've seen a new Metroid game. Our knowledge of the franchise might be a little rusty, so Nintendo has released this history lesson of the Metroid series narrated by Samus Aran herself. Samus recounts her tale up until when Metroid: Other M picks up.
Metroid: Other M will be out August 31 for the Wii. I so can't wait.
Hamza Aziz, Destructoid's Community Director, has been here since day one. He was born when a tiger coughed up a hairball into a pool of ooze. He was one of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles before budget cuts. Hamza works as a previews editor and manages a team in San Francisco. To date he has given away tens of thousands of dollars in prizes to readers. What a dick. Actually, Hamza is as kind as he is hairy.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Super Metroid was one of my favorite SNES games (right up there next to Star Fox, the Scope series, Secret of Evermore, etc) -- that entire narration was totally legit and I will definitely be sharing this with my younger brother who grew up on this game with me!
Let's hope this game beasts on Wii.
I was seriously just having this discussion with a friend of mine the other day, though -- would it not be amazing if Metroid crossed over to PS3 or 360?! With the L4D crossover and the Mass Effect 2 Crossover, do you think this is possible?!
... Probably not.
But there's always hope!
And I'm still annoyed that they've been ignoring the existence of the Prime games. I mean, come on, there were 3 of them and they were pretty fantastic, why ignore the whole thing?
Anyway, the pre-rendered cutscenes in Other M look absurdly good. I mean, holy shit!
Naysayers be damned, this is looking like the game of the year to me.
M Other
wow! didn't see that until now :O
You seem nice enough and I guess you don't know...
Metroid is first party. Nintendo OWNS the property. Unless Nintendo goes out of business it will never happen,
OT:Well voice ain't great. It's definitely not shit like RMC over at GN thinks it is. Just decent and the final line was extremely korny...
I'm surpised they decided to completely ignore Prime but w/e I guess. Played at E3 controls gonna take some getting used to but really looking forward to it.
True, but in other cutscenes that I've I got the same impression. Even when she meets Adam again after a long time apart, which I guess would be kind of a big deal, she just sounds like she's reading her lines from a piece of paper or something.
Anyway, I'm not that bothered by it, I'm sure the gameplay will be fantastic anyway.
I don't have a Wii so I'm not going to get the game obviously, but I just watched a few trailers and it does look like an interesting/fun game.
When you just reunited with a man you're not on good terms with, it sould feel awkward. Especially when when there's another guy there that still sees you as his buddy. Anthony Higgs doesn't see Samus any differently than before, Adam does.
As for the narrative, well, Samus is talking in the past tense. She always seems to go that route. Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion and Metroid Zero Mission usually focus on her recounting events as far as story goes
@Cynical Gamer - If you thought the Prime games sucked, I'd hate to see your idea of a good game. All they really lacked was speed boost and proper screw attack, but given what they had accomplished otherwlse, that was a small price to pay. If Super Metroid wasn't my favorite game ever, Metroid Prime would indeed take its spot.
Even with the prime games set aside for this story, I do wish they had followed the art direction of the Prime games a bit more closely. Sorry, but the ol' lobster claw version of the Space Pirates isn't doing it for me anymore.
See it isn't the lobster men that bothers me. It's the Metroid Fusion's NEON lobster men design. Personally I'd like to see more of a design leaning towards Metroid Prime Echoes' Pirates/ Grenadier designs. THOSE were beauties.... Just needed Corruption's heads >_> <_<
The narration is...interesting. I like the voice, however hearing her say "Baby" particularly is odd. It sounds like she's recounting something, which is good. It's just that...moments where she does add in some sort of emotion, it doesn't sit right.
WTF, are the prime games suddenly not canon? I thought they were prequels. I could be wrong. Otherwise, great video.
They're canon, but it's more about the main story, which is the original Metroid (and the remake), Metroid II, Super Metroid, and not mentioned in the video, Metroid Fusion, if we look it at this way, Other M is like a 3.5.
Prime were awesome, but the thing was about Phazon and Dark Samus, which was kinda separated from the main storyline
Neither series should be played for their intricate plot points.
Funny thing is, I've said both Samus and Zebes the exact same way as they do in they're said in the trailers, the only thing that I said wrong apparently was Aran (where I went with A-ran).
And the more I think about the voice acting, the more I realized how much Fridge Brilliance it all is. Samus's speech is awkward and kind of flat, which people continue to crticize, but I mean, if you think about it, Samus isn't the type to seem comfortable with talking. She was raised by bird-people of all things, when she was young and spends the majority of her missions completely alone. I severely doubt she'd be able to interact or speak with other people naturally, considering she hardly does it.
And it also continues to make Samus stand out against the back-drop of 'badass action grrls' because of this. I initially rallied against the fact that Hale wasn't voicing Samus, but as I think about it more... I don't think that Hale's general voice could really fit into Samus.
I really hope with the release of the 3DS comes a collection of revamped versions of the core games (minus Other M, if you would call it a core game). Super Metroid with Zero Mission physics would absolutely destroy.
The e-manga revealed a ton of interesting stuff.
- What planet Samus lived on with her family and the event that turned her into an orphan. Her first encounters with the Chozo and Space Pirates, including Ridley. The reason why both the Chozo and Space Pirates arrived on her home world when she was a child.
- The origins of Mother Brain and how Ridley is able to regenerate from fatal wounds. Samus Aran's personal history with Ridley. How Mother Brain had an instrumental involvement in the creation of the Power Suit.
- The names of the Chozo who acted as Samus Aran's surrogate father and the other Chozo who donated blood so that she could survive and adapt on planet Zebes. How the Chozo lost their ability to fly and how the species is a dying race. How many years Samus lived with the Chozo and their intentions behind giving Samus the power suit. Samus being recruited into military service of the Galactic Federation and her relationship with Adam Malkovich.
- The Chozo's prior knowledge and involvement of the cultivation of Metroids and the X-parasites (including plans for its destruction). Why the Chozo didn't inform Samus or the Galactic Federation of the existence of both species. The Space Pirates prior use of other life forms for purposes of biological weaponry. The event that caused the Metroid cultivation project to go wrong due to an attack from the Space Pirates.
- The motive behind Mother Brain's alliance with the Space Pirates and betrayal of the Chozo.
@Hiltz - K-2L incident and being raised by the Chozo didn't come from Metroid Manga. It came from a manga released around the time of Super Metroid. Americans got to read the translated version of the manga in Nintendo Power. Chairman Keaton even made his first appearance there.

Metroid Manga expanded upon things, but as with the Nintendo Power comic, it seems to have a similar origin story, but a lot of stuff that probably isn't going to be canon, either.
Metroid Other M should clear that up, though.
Not very cynical, and you're def not a gamer if you disliked them. Fact is Prime was pretty much the perfect way to transition Metroid to 3D, actually the original at least is probably the most pure Metroid title since the original.
In regards to the Canon, Sakamoto probably doesn't like the Prime games because they were better, and wants everyone to forget about them. Wild theory I guess...
I'll give this one a rental, I just don't see myself buying it.
No I ain't mad. If "U" think it sucks I could care less, I like it and that's all that matters.
"U" may resume trolling...
Don't like that game fine, don't like it. Doesn't hurt my feelings.
The Prime games sucked in my opinion. They were lousy excuses as Metroid games and they were also trying to jump on the Halo bandwagon with them... Which is not a Metroid game in my opinion.
Thank you for ignoring those shit games.
@superdeeduper51:
The prime series were awesome in their own way, but they fail in comparison to the sidescrolling metroids.
@Bigmoose85:
What kind of fucking idiot can't grasp that the English language uses capital letters for the first letter of each sentence and contractions have apostrophes (ex: can't, not cant).
OH SNAP!
