I've said it before and I'll say it again - Iwata should NOT speak at these things. I know it was scripted, but the smug look on his face when he announced it made this lie even worse!

I kind of stopped playing after the first one so...yeah I'd be more excited to hear about something else to be honest.
I didn't see it as the most important software reveal especially as it was not a reveal in first place, it was more like a suggestion. (Though I will admit, it sounded more like a very solid confirmation).
I would not be surprised if they make a new one for Wii U or 3DS, I simply think it will eventually happen no matter what. I just wish the new entry does not try too hard on being "epic" like Brawl. Not saying that Brawl was bad, but I feel like it was missing some of the feel of global tribute Melee had. Most of the trophies in Brawl felt pretty rushed away in my opinion, like they made lots of mentions that were pretty odd to me.
I dunno, I'd just leave Sora Ltd. to make it whenever they want, Kid Icarus uprising is looking like an incredibly solid action/adventure game. i would have loved more coverage on that game.

I'm sure he's right, but why would Sakurai say this. Who would tell the press "My employer lied, makes me cringe."

It's probably a translation issue - I would guess Sakurai said something along the lines of "My employer jumped the gun - it makes me a bit nervous!" - or something cute like that.

I don't recall Iwata saying that it would be out at launch. He was probably just announcing that there will be a new Smash Bros game which is something that everyone was already expecting. The big news from that was that it was also coming out for the 3DS.

They've pretty much hinted that this was the case since E3, so it's not surprising. Iwata even admitted that he "wasn't supposed to say it". Still, it's a bit alarming that Sakurai himself doesn't feel completely committed to the project as yet, even if Smash Bros. U is an inevitability.
Also, I think people may be misunderstanding Sakurai's statement a little bit. His saying that he has nothing "planned" it meant to imply that he hasn't begun planning the title(s) yet, not that he doesn't have plans to do so.

Well this sucks.. I've never had a smash bros but really like them and the 3ds one will be my first, but I want it to come NAOOO
Well, there was about an 8 year gap between SSBM and SSBB so I was kinda expecting another long gap. It's been, what, only 3 years that SSBB cane out?
There are no PLANS, meaning there's nothing on paper. They've discussed it, he agreed to it. It just nothing's been done yet.
Meh, I didn't even get into the last one. My friends and I played hours and hours of SSBM on the GC in-between PC sessions at our LAN parties, but none of us much liked the Wii, and it just looked like a slightly touched-up copy of SSBM anyway.
Then again, I can't see anything ever bringing me back to Nintendo. I have no interest whatsoever in handhelds, and their console side was already on life support with me since they promised online with the GC (going so far as to make ports on it for ethernet/modem adapters), then tossing it aside.

Considering how fast Smash Brothers games tend to get stale, I'm confused that there's such a demand for new ones. They didn't exactly innovate after the first one. They only increased the roster and threw balance out the window.
I'd be happy if they updated the netcode for Brawl to give you more online options besides 2 min time battles when you're playing against strangers.

You forget that the Brawl announcement was made in exactly the same way, and for exactly the same reasons. It's history repeating itself.

Video game related translations screw up all the time! It's because it's passed down from report, to report, to report, to media outlet, etc - down the vine it becomes garbled.
Now translators in general - I respect the hell out of. Most of them know a minimum of 5 languages, and have a mental capacity much larger than mine. I'll trust them to decipher codes and ciphers, but when it comes to Japanese game developers, there's a lot lost in translation :p

yet again we're getting trolling from MR Sterling. Sakurai said they'll start working on it after Kid Icarus will gone gold.

This is slightly misleading, Jim. The actual interview says that a new Smash Bros. IS planned for the Wii U and 3DS as announced this E3, but Sakurai has not drawn up any plans on what he wants this new game to be like yet, as he's too busy with completing Kid Icarus at this point. Although this is doubtless a translation issue, please edit your post accordingly as the meaning has been totally changed to something more along the lines of 'no new Smash Bros. planned.'

Nintendo seems to piss me off on a daily basis for the majority of this hardware generation, and they seemingly wish to continue this trend into the future.

I hate to say it, but Sakurai is to SSB what Kojima is to MGS, and though I'd also love to see a new ZOE one day, if they can keep Kojima buckled down and working on good MGS games, Sakurai can ease up a little bit and stop taking the "WE CAN'T MAKE ANY MORE, THE LAST ONE WAS PERFECT" mentality. It's not like there's a story we care about, we just want another one on the latest technology. Besides, if SSB can turn around and influence the games it derives from (Kid Icarus Uprising, and shades of it in Metroid Other M), then more power to it.
Actually I don't think it has been mistranslated. Sakurai is busy working on Kid Icarus and while he knew be working on then next Smash eventually he doesn't think it's a good idea that Iwata announced a game that hasn't even started planning yet.
