Saints Row: The Third: 1 million community characters photo

There is only one week until gamers make a return trip to the mean streets of Stilwater in Saint's Row: The Third, but another milestone has just been met. The Initiation Station demo, that was released about a week ago, allowed players to create their optimal thug. According to Volition, the Initiation Station created characters have now hit the 1 million mark.

Kevin Kraff, Vice President of Global Branding at THQ said, "The characters we’ve seen are mostly ridiculous, often hilarious, and always over-the-top. And now there are a million of them...With the crazed creativity we’ve seen in only one week, we can’t wait to see what’s to come. One million is just the beginning.”

Some of the other statistics that Volition has shared are quite interesting as well. Apparently, the most popular skin tones, aside from the traditional ones, tended to be green, red and silver. Along with 24 characters created with the title of "God" and representing a variety of religious backgrounds. I guess only in Stilwater can you find Christian "God" teaming up with silver-skinned Lao Tzu or a red and metallic Bhudda to take on a luchador street gang for control of Steel Port.

I hate to be that guy, but SR3 is in Steelport. Not Stilwater.

I made three, it's a shame THQ doesn't want me to use them, what with that online pass and all.

And most of them are Joker and Hulk cosplays.

At least 750,000 of them either infringe on any number of copyrights or copy original creations crafted by other members of the community.

I should know. I contributed two or three knock-offs of famous comic/videogame characters to that clutter myself!

@Faux

Isn't that part of the fun? 90% of the 'original' creations are crap. They just picked a shirt, pants and made both whatever their favorite color was. I'd say it takes more originality to skew the options in such a way that replicates something that wouldn't normally be possible in the game.

I'll have endless fun roaming around my game as Duke Nukem or Kinda Master Chief, because that just adds to the sheer ridiculousness already present in the game.

To be fair its more She-Hulk than Hulk so that makes it ok. Also

to bad about 999,000 of them are generic types with out ever even changing the face/body and just changing the pants and not even editing colors. tons of fat ugly things with colored skin and full of tattoos. no real creativity in any of them. want proof? goto the gamespot character battle page. they all suck.

My two favorite creations thus far were rip offs from television series.

A perfect Killface (from FriskyDingo) doppleganger, and Blue Tobias (from Arrested Development).

@RenegadePanda- While I was being sarcastic(and intentionally hypocritical), there is still a such thing as too much of a good thing. I look forward to all of the unauthorized cross-over action that will be going on next week, it looks as if the Joker impostors from Gotham City Impostors will be dominating the game.

I'm almost ready for a night of a million, billion ninjas at this point. Thinking of which, where are all of the Tick copy-bugs at? Is it because no one else can quite fill his tights?

@renegade I find that people with copycat characters, names like xxxxXsephirothxxx and those that play against the universe they're presented with to be the most annoying people to play with online.

No offense intended toward XSepjirothX, it's just an unfortunate name.

Whoops, there should be a 'but' in there before the 'it looks as if...'.
How in the world could I slip up and leave out the homophone for butt in a single sentence?!

The King of Saints competition is a bit of a damper on the fun of the Initiation Station, though. So much squandered potential in the character creation tool over there.

Can people use the created characters made in the initiation station in their game?

Woah, I just had a crazy idea. Do you think anybody made Mario yet?

Evidently Itagaki, the director of Ninja Gaiden and DoA, is an official playable character in the game. That's pretty cool.

@Flamingboar- That's the whole idea behind it. That's one other thing that makes the attempted duplication of other people's designs come across as so silly. Everyone in the community is already giving them away as free launch DLC.

@Handy-I have a hunch that you're just putting us all on, but yes,of course, repeatedly. Everyone can search for the Mario or Super Mario Bros tags to see it for themselves.

It reminds me of those Mario Bros. and GTA mash-up videos around the web. Now people can finally play it for themselves beyond hitting the Play button on the video player.

My characters look like they came from brink.

Hey, whatever, at least the art direction was cool in that game.

I gave mine a tiny one, I figure all the crazy, over the top violent things he does in the game is just overcompensating.

njsykora: More people need to be that guy. The quality level at Destructoid, while never good, has become abysmal over the last year or two.

I made pretty good versions of Mr. Destructoid and Wonder Woman. Too bad you have to pay for Xbox Live to upload them properly for the contest. I could've just taken cell phone pics but that seemed to go against the rules.

I assume THQ has been paying well? The Saints Row 3 overexposure is nauseating.

I really hope the customization options are better in the full game. I'm having a very difficult time making a Celty Sturluson if I can't put cat ears on that motorbike helmet or close its visor :-/

No! The overexposure has been fantastic for a change. The whole Internet wets themselves over a Grand Theft Auto 5 trailer when we should be getting more of this about a game THAT COMES OUT NEXT WEEK!
