So I heard there was this videogame called Grand Theft Auto IV that everyone was playing. THQ has probably heard of it as well, and would like to remind you that Saints Row 2 has the unenviable task of following it. This is the latest trailer for the GTA clone's sequel, Saints Row 2.

The first Saints Row was doubtlessly successful in part due to the lack of any current-gen GTA at the time, so this game is going to have to pull out all the stops, as well as carve its own niche, if it wants to stand out. It seems to be doing so; while GTA upped the realism and storytelling of its last game, Saints Row appears to be going in a more cartoon-like direction, with over-the-top weaponry like chainsaws and shockpads and a more obvious comedy route, at least in this trailer.

I hope Saints Row 2 continues to pursue that direction. The first game followed in GTA's footsteps a bit too much, especially in terms of its humor and story, which came off as desperate and reaching. If Saints Row 2 gets a character all of its own, rather than trying to ape the style of the game it copied, I think it'll be great.

We'll see, though. After the last game's utterly childish pimp missions and "drugs are clever" mentality that GTA grew out of, I wonder if the writers have what it takes to look like anything but a GTA wannabe. I really hope they do, though.

lol awesome trailer!

if GTA4 hadn't been so insanely great, I might have tried it :-) but now it'll take quite some convincing for me to do anything more then rent this :-)

This seems to be the missing component from GTA IV. A mindless pointless rampage with explosions and guns and awesomeness. I love my GTA IV to the days, but i still occasionally want to break free from realism and go back to just blowing shit up, and that's just not possible in GTA IV. I may get this, I never managed to get the first Saints Row, i decided to hold out until GTA IV came out.

Great writeup Jim, but are the trannies still in it? GTA4 would have been perfect with trannies and more forgivable driving.

I like my video game ladies to pack a lil' something extra, ya know?

I actually liked the first Saints Row. Yes, it was childish and sophomoric; but I loved every minute of it. I liked how customizable the characters were and it didn't take itself too seriously. They mostly followed the "your protagonist never speaks" except for three or four moments. To hear your character blurt out his first line "That's bullshit! Those (shoes) are last year's fall line!" with great conviction was hilarious. True, the game didn't bring anything really new to the genre, it was a a decent way to kill a few hours.

I agree with CaptainApocalyse, I loved the first one so much! Mostly because of the good shooting and customizing. In fact, I got 100% in the game.

Nice one Mxyzptlk. I was gonna do something lame with an ULTORior motive, but that's been rendered useless now.

I hope Saints Row is gonna be fun like the first one, it lacks the "ohh it looks a bit shinier than GTA!" factor this time around though.

i like how gta and saints row are now different instead of one copying the other. i love my gta for everything but its still missing some fun. i loved the saints row for the craziness and mini games, but the story and what not were nothing special. plus is it me or do the graphics look kinda sub-par (not much different from the first one)?

All jokes aside, it does look fun. I like the idea of customizing my character AND my gang. Maybe we could all look like clowns and then my rivals could look like Neo Tokyo delinquents and we could fight out Akira style battles. (^_^)b

I'm hopeful that this will be a good game. I think it will be worth purchasing, or for the cheapos, wait for the price to drop. I just hope that they hired better writers.

Kind of an old video, but shows me that Saints Row 2 is just not for me. I'm not up for an open world game because I can just go cause mayhem, but because it more than likely has a good storyline to follow along with as well as an interesting to play in world.

Red Faction 3 has to have Keith David yelling the N word every 10 minutes now; for those uninitiated; ULTOR is the evil corporation from the Red Faction series, equivalent to UAC from Doom.

Crip walking shirtless while wearing a flight helmet is a bold fashion statement.

I'll definitely rent this, but am I the only one who thinks that the Saints Row (1 and 2) characters run around like they have a ramrod up their ass?

(Also, people need to stop bitching about the driving in GTA4.)

I'm actually more interested in this than I was for GTAIV, even more so now that I've had the experience of driving in GTAIV. Realistic driving can suck a cock. Also I'm hoping there will be fewer cops to deal with than GTAIV, you can't go on a decent murdering rampage in GTAIV without them getting involved. Where's the fun in that?

This game is gonna be so much better than GTA IV, don't get me wrong, GTA IV is ok but I'm incredibly underwhelmed by it and the new realistic approach sucks, this is the kinda crazy shit I want. Especially in my multiplayer.

I love GTA IV....but man, the realism just tends to drag down the fun sometimes. Im not done with the single player missions quite yet, but I have this gut feeling that after I do, im not gonna want to fire up GTA IV much more. Sometimes I just want to go on a killing rampage and have gang wars.

If Saints Row 2 comes out later this year I might pick it up. The first one was pretty damned good.

Oh, and agreed, realistic driving physics suck cock. Im not playing Forza, im getting in time with my "murder simulator." So I damn well be able to go 90mph and be able to turn on a dime when hauling ass to my next mission.

GTA 4 is an excellent and fun game. I enjoy playing it more than Saints Row. I think that the driving in GTA 4 is great. It may take some time to get used to (for some people), but I have a lot of fun driving. I would like to see how this game turns out.
