Saints Row 2 pushed back to October, Uncle Gary is not amused photo

Here’s a bit of sad news for those of you wanting to play more Grand Theft Auto-style games without actually playing GTA: THQ has announced that Saints Row 2, which was originally scheduled for release on August 26 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, will now be delayed until October 14.

“Product quality and marketing considerations” were the official reasons behind the delay. Honestly, you can’t really blame them for wanting to distance Saints Row 2 as far away from Grand Theft Auto IV as possible. Sure, the two games take different approaches to the open-world genre, but people are still going to draw comparisons anyway.

No offense to the guys at Volition, but I can’t see Saints Row 2 getting the same critical acclaim that GTA IV has received. Hopefully, though, this delay will help get the game that much closer to reaching a similar level of success.

Personally I think it's a good decision. Saint's Row is looking pretty good, and I'd hate to see it get lost in GTA4's shadow.

And the animation when you throw someone off a roof/through a window is priceless. Too much fun.

Smart move. I didn't think the first Saint's Row was all that hot, but the sequel is shaping up to be a lot of fun and I can understand them wishing to push things back, even if they did say prior that they weren't worried about competing.

Either way, I can hardly blame them, but I really would like to give it a go sooner.

It will be fun, but it won't be GTA quality. The delay is fine with me, Mercenaries 2 will fill my sandbox needs that month anyway.

I kinda thought people who bought GTAIV would buy this anyway. but I guess it helps?

I'm really looking forward to this and I'm glad their pushing it back, it's a good move. I really enjoyed the first Saints Row and can't wait for all of the customization options of number 2.

I'm also quite happy it won't have that much critical acclaim, it means less news coverage and people calling it a murder simulator.

I think the marketing concerns they were thinking about were parents buying games for their kids for XMAS

Jim, we should totally form a hawt trannie duo for the game's co-op and fight crime together. Well, maybe not crime fighting so much as maiming everything that moves.

I loved the first SR and in many respects it's still light years ahead of what even the likes of GTAIV offers (I'm looking at you car saving, mp3 player, side missions, customization, and aiming, specifically).

I personally can't wait for this. As long as it doesn't pull a GTAIV and remove so many of the fun side missions and gameplay options that made the first so much fun, then I will be extremely happy.

I could see this delay comming a mile off even though they kept saying originaly it would be on time despite being close to GTAIV.

TBH I personaly think they will push it back again to the 1st quarter of next year.

The reason why I reckon is to simply re-texture everything (just my guess) and sharpen it up a bit.

Also... Saints Row in my opinion was not really story driven, I wonder if they are going to try and put an engaging story in SR2 seeing as GTAIV is a good onep; or if they are going to cut there loses and simply going to use the cut scenes like in the 1st one to get the gamer from mission A to B etc.

The only thing that bothers me about this is now I have another fucking game to buy during the holiday season. Hey video game industry, I have to buy shit for people other than myself around that time.

@xe-cute: Uh... "simply using cut scenes... to get the gamer from mission A to B etc." is exactly what GTAIV does now. How is it any different? All GTAIV is a lot of nicely acted cut scenes interspersed by age-old missions and mechanics.

Why people think GTAIV simply because it has a better written story than the previous ones is beyond me. Game-wise it plays exactly like all the old titles and even has less to offer than other titles in the series.

I can't wait to write my review and get flamed for it.

@B-Radicate

The cut scenes in GTAIV gives you insight into the characters and there history and relationships (IMHO).

I never felt the cut-scenes in the original Saints Row was more than short simple "he has annoyed me now go kill him" basic type thing, no depth or anything apart from explaining what to do next.

Hope that makes it clearer for you to understand my view.

It's a good move, the further they distance themselves from the GTA release the better for them.

I've been playing Godfather recently and it reminded me that sandbox games don't have to be up to GTA standards to be fun.

Its a good move, give them time to work out any flaws and distance themselves from GTA IV which IMO was a total dissapointment, I'm still trying to figure out how they made a next gen GTA and actually took away things to do.

Thank God. I've been silently pleading with them to do this for the longest time. There's no way you can release a GTA clone, even one as competent as Saints Row, so soon after GTA fucking IV. My only regret is that they didn't push SR2 back to January or beyond and let Volition go to town.

GTA has obviously taken the realistic approach while Saints Row is more arcady. I believe their is room for two big sandbox games. Sure the first Saints wasn't as good as the GTA games, but it had its own cheesy charm. From the looks of the previews, it seems like Volition are expanding alot on the original while still keeping the fun/cheese factor intact.

It will be in their best interest to push SR2 back even farther, so that people will be over the GTAIV hype and ready to dive back into Stilwater.

Gang wars, FTW.
