Saint's Row dev criticizes GTA IV, says it 'lost a lot of the fun' photo

If I have one problem with Saint's Row 2 developer Volition, it's that they won't shut up about Grand Theft Auto IV. Rather than letting the work speak for itself, it seems that the team has to constantly pick at the game it shamelessly copied in the original Saint's Row. The picking, however, continues anon as producer Dan Sutton has provided his insight into what went wrong with Rockstar's latest jaunt around Liberty City.

"The encouraging thing is that a lot of people seem to be in favor of Saints Row," stated Sutton.  "I saw on the internet comments that a lot of users seem to feel that GTA IV went to the realistic gameplay and lost a lot of the fun experiences from games like San Andreas."

"They really slowed it down for this one. They made it really realistic. It's an awesome environment but I think they lost a lot of fun factor. We've seen that on a lot of forums. "It's been months since it came out and multiplayer's kind of held on to that. There are still some things you can go back and do like the hitman stuff, there's some racing activities you can do, you can shoot pigeons if you want... but beyond that there's not that much replayability."

Saint's Row 2, of course, has promised to be a lot more over-the-top and silly, which is a great direction to go in and could have really helped to distance Saint's Row 2 from GTA IV ... had Volition not constantly closed the gap between the two games by talking about Grand Theft Auto the whole frigging time. It'd be like the writer of one of those Fighting Fantasy books comparing their work to the ol' Holy Bible -- even if your book's more fun, you'd do well to distance yourself from such mainstream competition.

Saint's Row had too many of these 'fun' aspects as far as I'm concerned. Pimping cars, pimping my clothes, pimping ho's, far too much in all.

I'll take a bunch of these fun elements over the basically none from GTA4.

I kinda agree with them on this one. I do miss jetpacking around with double uzis. Hell, even a tank would have been nice.

He's right though. I've been bored out of my fucking mind by GTAIV as of yet. I can't get the drive to continue the game because it lacks fun. Hell, going around and maiming random civilians isn't even as fun as it should be. It's not fun at all. I've done it once since getting the game, my first day. It was incredibly unsatisfying, and I've never done it since.

In some ways I prefer Godfather: Blackhand Edition. At least all that waggle and shooting is fun to do. The lack of taxis is my major gripe with that game. Too much driving, no way to skip it.

that's all these guys do is criticise gta, fucking put your game and then criticise the best selling thing since sliced bread. they talk all this big game but gave up on porting to the ps3 because it was too hard, they were halfway done! these guys are quiters. why don't they talk about how gta took more time due to the ps3 version?because they failed when they tried and gave up.

McCain: Obama Sucks!
Media: Why? What would you do better?
McCain: I know what I'd do, because Obama Sucks!

Sorry to introduce a real-world parallel...

@AKK I love Godfather on the Wii. It has a deeper system of keeping me entertained when not playing the main missions. I just love extorting those shopkeepers :)

I'll reserve judgement.
I completely agree with him on this one. Hell, I had GTA4 a week before launch, I still haven't finished it.

Although I'll wait to see if this turns out crap too, Crap=Crap.

I loved gtaIV, but it was a different experience from the other gtas, a more serious one. I for welcome the over the top action that Saints Row promises.
Also, Tera Patrick

I finished GTA IV, it was fun. But I'm really looking forward to SR2. The game looks to bring a fun atmosphere that only Brucie had in GTA IV.

I see why he would want to compare- the first one was compared a lot so why not beat the public to the punch and show why your game is different? makes sense to me- besides, the statements aren't to get people to buy saints row instead of GTA, but to keep people from saying "I already have GTA why do i ned saints row?"
I liked GTA IV because of it's "movielike" setting, but I think that I will like saints row 2 as well for other reasons - I like the idea of the character and crib creation and all- I want to make a fucked up, wrong tranny character

They have a damn point. I may be trading in GTA IV for SR 2 if I can get me some base jumping and high speed aviation action (and a hot dog suit.)

Pretty surprising comments here. I'm on the "haven't finished GTA4, probably never will" bandwagon. Shit is boring. Relationships and shit? What is this, the Sims?

No more nitpicking! It's entertaining. I think it would be funny if he just comes out and says "Boy that GTAIV was a huge load of steaming crap, SR2 is going to kick the shit out of it!". Get some rivalry going on.

I'm sort of glad with the way things turned out. The games taking different directions means that there's room in consumers' libraries for both.

It's really annoying how much Volition talks about GTAIV. Get off its coat tails already.

I agree, GTA IV really has lost its fun factor. But it's porbably due to the fact that I've played all of the 3D gta's and I just didn't care. Plus the cell phone ringing all the time sucked ass, too.

If Saints Row 2 has nudity I'm all in, I thought GTA4 really dumbed its forward freedom loving self down big time with the new release. Saints Row 2 seems to be willing to step over GTA4.

Well, I can't stand the gangsta way, but I must admit GTA lost much of its senses of humour and parody. What was left was a very realistic, although not that fun experience. I don't want to kill innocent bystanders. I want to see a Tony Montana-like guy with a flower T-Shirt run over deformed old ladies and stab to death ridicously exxagerated whores. GTA IV took itself too seriously for a sandbox game, to the point of making me feel really bad for running over someone. And that's not that great, given that I really look after videogames as a relaxing experience, rather than a moral questioning barrage.

what's wrong with having both? I don't believe either "sucks monkey balls."

I actually totally agree with him. GTA4 was a masterpiece, it was the Godfather of video games, if you ask me. But, it certainly did not feel like a GTA game. Which is probably good, it's good R* mixed it up, but I wish there was another game that was more like a true San Andreas sequel.

That's why I'm actually looking forward to Saints Row 2. I had a LOT of fun with the first one, I think that Saints Row 2 is going in the right direction by trying to have more "fun."

Saints Row is like that annoying guy at the party who wont shut up about that time the mall security guards almost arrested him for skateboarding in the parking lot.

GTA is the olympic gold winning astronaut who never runs out of epic stories people want to hear.

Both GTA and saints row games suck equal amounts.

argument solved!

So I would not touch any of them again with a 12 foot pole.

so yes the both suck the monkey balls you are mistaken. since the both do it as equal they both have there own section of the ball halfs to themselfs.

Oh and Mega man 9 powned sanits row 2 at E3 if saints row was even shown I did not care enough to go look.

I only had to play 3 minutes of mega man 9 to figure that out.

So In other news, One of mega man 9 PR guy and a player say "GTA and Saints row sucks and all the fun was sucked out on the very first crappy Ps1 game that some how sold enough to get another one made."

My faith in humans has been non existent since that day.
