What the hell is she doing?!

I'll be the first to say that I don't like survival horror. I'm a tiny little girl. Even my avatar scares me. That being said, I can't figure out why I'm so stoked about Sadness, from Polish developer NIBRIS. Details up until now have been scant, and I had kind of forgotten about it until this sick concept art showed up on NGCFrance.

This game is going to be creepy, as you can tell. Either this woman above is cutting her hair, or stabbing herself in the frontal lobe -- either way, I'm getting a serious Samara vibe. The devs are saying that this game isn't for the weak of heart, and requires you to be 21 before entering the game's website.

For those of you who don't know, Sadness takes place in the Balkans on the eve of World War I, and centers around a woman and her narcoleptic son. It, according to NIBRIS, will deal with schizophrenia and nyctophobia (fear of the dark).

The game is supposed to be in black and white, but there also seems to be a great deal of color in that shot of the roses. I can't imagine this stark contrast not being significant. As is NIBRIS' usual M.O., we're just going to have to speculate, since they're not telling us much. So, check the gallery for some new images and hit the jump for the Sadness trailer, in case you missed it.

That triangular-shaped head beastie concept drawing seems to be lifted directly from the Robert McCammon novel "Swan Song" (which is a direct rip-off of Stephen Kings "The Stand")

Wait... is it a kind of adventure game? Oh that would be so cool with the wiimote.

I need a wii for this.

It sounds like an interesting game, and I'm all for original IPs. I just wish that I could put a little more confidence behind this game. The only thing I can think of when I hear this game's name is that footage of Necronesia/Escape from Bug Island I watched in Broken Pixels #5.

I don't know about this game. I've been hearing about it forever and yet they still refuse to show anything more than concept art and FMVs. I do like the concept of a black and white game though.

Yeah... I'm pumped. And while NONE of that is game footage... it relays the concept VERY well, and when pulled off properly, will make for the most kickest of ass.

The same company is also making a next-gen River Raid clone for the Wii. Which is kinda weird. But Sadness could indeed be pretty rad.

I'm hoping this game will be pretty good. But I wouldn't be surprised if the game sucked it hard.

Actually I look forward to this game for 1 completely ironic (if you knew me) reason. Absolutely NO WEAPONS. Yup, zero, nada, bupkus. You spend the entire game running and figuring out how to get away. This combined with the wiimote immersion should make for a really cool experience.

That said, this game MUST have good controls. The thing that lured me in (no weapons) will surely generate endless negative publicity in the average gamer communities. If the controls are even so-so, this game will tank. If the controls are tight and the gameplay is good, we could be looking at one of the 1st games developed from the ground up that will truly show what the Wii is capable of. This is something that so far the developers have been unable to accomplish. Sure Elebits was fun for a day or two, but if they include multiple endings, and easter eggs, this game could be phenomenal.

I know nobody is expecting me to write something positive about Nintendo's Wii or software; but for once, I just might have a space in the cold black crusty cockles of my heart for something original and fun from Nintendo.

This is Negative Nancy Nintendo, from my underground lair...signing off.

JoeyBuckets....there are weapons cause the developers described the game when they first talked about saying you could use the wiimote and take a blade of glass and slit someone's throat.

So maybe just not traditional weapons like a knife or a gun.

Well said, JB. However, I hope this game doesn't go the route of Okami -- great game, doesn't appeal to the masses enough. I'm afraid that's what's going to happen, though.

I'm really pumped about this game. Coming from a relatively unknown developer too makes me even more pumped, so far all of the promo stuff they've put out looks pretty slick.

Seems good but I need to see it in action.

Also, cockrings.

Your probably right Orcist, than again are the developers to blame that these games don't sell well, or the consumers who rather stick to what they already know? Almost the same thing is going on with movies, people are more likely to go to a blockbuster than to an art-house movie that doesn't mean it's a bad movie.

Also isn't it time to release some game footage? at least some screenshots. They can't hype this game forever solely on sketches and the fact that the game is black and white. That trailer is over a year old and not much happened since than.

Still I'm glad there still going with this game I had kinda stopped believing that this game will ever become a reality.

Hey Cruds I think that the developers ran into some trouble finding someone to publish the game early on and they probably didnt get much done while they were searching. I think it may take a while they are a small company and all.
I think that too human game messed up and showed itself too soon and now I'm really not interested in it any more First impression means a lot and this game Sadness is on track to impress

Nibris is certainly a vaporware trademark, but indeed they have signed a deal with FRONTLINE Studios to "co-produce" Sadness: http://www.frontstudios.com/newss.php?sekcja=2&news_id=33

The problem is that FRONTLINE is a horrible low-budget mobile game developer, with an experience only of making crappy Java games and trashy GBA/NDS budget games. Their last release is called Underground Pool (for Nintendo DS): IGN score: 3.5 out of 10, GS score: 3.1 out of 10

Do a bit of googling and stop getting excited of this great video game swindle.
