Sad koala! Boom Blox debuts to low sales numbers photo

In the most depressing news of the day, according to the latest NPD data, Steven Spielberg’s amazing Wii exclusive Boom Blox only sold 60,000 copies in its first month of release. Putting that number in perspective, that is only 0.6% of all Wii owners.

While a lot of third parties are having trouble releasing hits on Nintendo’s popular console, this news comes as an extra shock since Boom Blox is easily one of the best games on the Wii. The puzzle mechanics are exceptional and the unique motion controls are used in a truly revolutionary, intuitive way. And, oh yeah, it was created by Steven freakin’ Spielberg.

Despite the low sales, EA remains confident the game will sell better and says it has already met the giant company’s expectations. And, honestly, 60,000 isn't terrible ... it’s just a bit disappointing. To ensure better sales, though, I am making a plea to the other 99.4% of Wii owners: If you like puppies, buy Boom Blox!

What do you think? If you own a Wii and haven't bought this incredible game ... why not?

I own a Wii and haven't bought this game yet. It's not that I don't want it or want to play it, it's more of I have too many damn games that I've only played once or twice because I keep buying more games that I will only play once or twice. I do plan on buying it though, just not today.

I love the people that come in and make comments like:

"A physics engine with simple graphics is not something that should sell well."

Yes, because there is no way a simple premise could POSSIBLY be entertaining. If it's not overloaded with 90 minutes of FMV or so graphics-heavy that you need a PC requiring $300/hr of electricity to operate, it can't possibly be worth your time.

I almost thought I might have been entertained, but this genius showed me there are no ridiculous bells and whistles. Thank God I didn't make that mistake. *Goes back to his emulator*

I rented the game and it went back to Gamefly the very next day. Sure, it's fun for a couple of hours but I just didn't feel a need to play after the first 3 hours. Fun for a little while, but that damn water hose pissed me off.

I don't even own a Wii, and I pitched in (a tiny bit) for Boom Blox. I don't necessarily like the "virtual Jenga" levels (they take patience, which is something I sorely lack), but there's so much more to the game than the grabbing tool. And I'd like to blast things with a bowling ball hose for reals. The throwing and blasting are so satisfying. It's just AMAZING!

I would like to get it, but since it's EA... ehh... maybe I'll pick up a used copy.

This is the reason why I haven't got it yet:
http://www.pricerunner.se/pl/653-1061826/Spel-foer-Nintendo-Wii/-Boom-Blox-priser?other_hits=658%3Aboom+blox%3B%3B%3B&q=boom+blox

It is to be noted that the cheapest price without shipping found on Pricerunner SWE is 549 SEK, which according to xe.com converts using the current rate into $91. That's 300% of the cheapest copy found on Pricerunner in the States.

Still, I found out that in Portugal, games are about $15-35 more expensive than those in Sweden - so I'm not really complaining.
Imaging grabbing a copy of GTAIV for $126. I'm not joking.

my 5 reasons, in order of appearance:
1. Mario Kart
2. Dr. Mario
3. Toki Tori
4. Sam & Max Hit the Road (ScummVM for the Wii)
4. Quake Wii port

These past months have just been too awesome for the Wii

My Wii isn't here yet, that's why I haven't bought it.

But I'm so shocked, I mean a fresh original game that uses the Wiimote in unique ways and is trying something different from all the shovelware on the Wii and it gets ignored.

COLOR ME SHOCKED.

Its like this hasn't happened before...

The game is over 80 dollars over here, I don't want a puzzle game quite that much when there are games a lot cheaper.

Because it's £30 for Jenga... with bombs.

From the reviews it comes across as a Tech-Demo, with a theme. It'll be bought, in time, and for the right price ;)

I bought it on Saturday, kind of an early Father's Day gift for myself. I enjoy it. If you're on the fence about it, I can fully understand waiting for the price to drop, though.

I picked it up on launch day. It's ok-ish. Dunno, maybe I'm missing something - I've almost completed all the levels, and it seems much more geared towards single player than party fun, which is weird for a game that is essentially Jenga 2.0. All the levels seem to focus on a singular aspect of the game - like the green goo blocks, or the exploding one - while only a very few seem to combine those different elements into a coherent whole. I get that I could build my own levels, but it seems like this would take a lot of effort to produce a mildly diverting level, and I bought this for its apparent "pick up and play"-ability

Maybe one of the people rhapsodising over this game could tell me which mode to pick to make it fun for a group of 4-6 people, because every time I've tried to get friends to play it, it quickly becomes very boring, and folks soon start asking to play Wii bowling again. Sorry, but until I'm shown otherwise, Boom Blox goes on the pile of "close, but no cigar" games....

I'm not too concerned. Casual gamers pick games up based on word of mouth from other casual gamers. "Serious" gamers (God, I hate these terms) have plenty of big games on their plate right now. EA should really spend some advertising during prime time and non-kid locales. As long as they keep the game out there, I'm sure it will sell just fine in the long run.

It's probably because on the outside it doesn't look that much different from all of the shitty shovelware that promises to be "fun."

1: Terrible marketing. There were TV commercials for this? I've never seen a single one.
2: It really should have been priced around $30-$40 dollars. I love the game (and everyone I've shown it to has become hooked), but they should have made it a bit cheaper to get it out there and help the word of mouth.
3: Too many other big titles released around the same time.

What do you think? If you own a Wii and haven't bought this incredible game ... why not?

Because it isn't Wii Sports or Wii Fit? heh, my poor Wii has been taken over by my family. I moved it out of the living room for a few days to try out SSBB and all I got was constant whining about not having it there for my parents to show their friends Wii bowling...
