I have a few rules in life, and one of them is that if you're going to eat at Taco Bell, whatever you don't ever, ever open up a taco to see what's inside. Just eat it. Knowing anything beyond "it's tasty" is a bad idea. What Bungie did is kind of like that.
The developer recently pulled together some information to calculate how much time people have spent playing Halo 3 online since the game's launch in September of 2007. The result? 2,023,153,340,764 seconds. Or 64,109 years. And that's only data calculated based on matchmaking; it doesn't take into account offline or custom games.
Oh. My. God.
Kind of makes you want to go out for a jog or have a picnic in the park, right?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Time for a picnic party.
I want to see the figures for WoW
Big numbers are pretty.
I am glad to have added to the running total of seconds played in Halo :)
2,023,153,430,001 seconds.
logic aside, I see what you're saying though, and I wasn't any less shocked by it. geez. find a hobby that involves moving more than your fingers, please.
there's only 24 hours in a day.
so if 300 people play halo3 from 3pm to 4pm that's still only 1 hour total played , not 300 total hours ,because its all the same hour they played.
Actually, it would take 64,109 players to spend A YEAR playing Halo 3 to reach this. Not an hour.
He's talking about 2 trillion man-seconds, which means that the 'average' Halo 3 player has sunk around 150 hours into the game. That means the 'average' Halo 3 player spends around 1% of his/her time playing Halo 3 online (assuming he/she bought the game on opening day). That's not too bad. Factor in we spend 1/3rd of our time sleeping, and 1/3rd of our time working. These people may very well have lives.
WoW Figures:
11.5 million subscribers * 12 hours/day * 3600 seconds/hour = 496,800,000,000 seconds/day
496,800,000,000 seconds/day + 1569 days of WoW =
779,479,200,000,000 seconds
That's a hell of a lot of wasted time.
Since it isn't the way things are... this is sad news.
Get a life losers!
Oh wait....Is this a video game blog?
Awkward
Actually, I remember a presentation by the guy who made the ESP Game (for tagging images) on the potential for games to get certain kinds of boring but computationally difficult game done. He compared the yearly man-hours of worldwide computer solitaire playing with the number of man-hours it took to build the Empire State Building. The latter was far less by orders of magnitude.
Not surprising that many people have played it though.
