Sad: 2,023,153,340,764 seconds have been spent playing Halo 3 photo

I have a few rules in life, and one of them is that if you're going to eat at Taco Bell, whatever you don't ever, ever open up a taco to see what's inside. Just eat it. Knowing anything beyond "it's tasty" is a bad idea. What Bungie did is kind of like that.

The developer recently pulled together some information to calculate how much time people have spent playing Halo 3 online since the game's launch in September of 2007. The result? 2,023,153,340,764 seconds. Or 64,109 years. And that's only data calculated based on matchmaking; it doesn't take into account offline or custom games.

Oh. My. God.

Kind of makes you want to go out for a jog or have a picnic in the park, right?

Glad I'm not part of that figure.

Time for a picnic party.

I think that makes sense. Pretty much everyone who ownes an Xbox owns this game. And that's a hell of a lot of hours.

Well than I assume it's safe to say that COD4 beat the 10.000 year mark easily. In fact now I want the guys at Infinity Ward to tell us how long we have played that game. I now I clocked over 75 hours online by now and there are about 2 million people in front of me in the leaderboard for the 360 alone. ^^

Microsoft are getting desperate. Next they're gonna count how many times people have pressed the on button?

Big numbers are pretty.

Although not as bad... it reminds me of the day i typed /played in DAoC on my minstrel and saw i had 270 days played.

I am glad to have added to the running total of seconds played in Halo :)

to reach that, all it'd take is 64,109 players each playing one hour.

logic aside, I see what you're saying though, and I wasn't any less shocked by it. geez. find a hobby that involves moving more than your fingers, please.

That's alot of number crunching, I wonder if Bungie could show each individual's playing time total?

technically people have only spent about a year and 6 months playing this game.

there's only 24 hours in a day.

so if 300 people play halo3 from 3pm to 4pm that's still only 1 hour total played , not 300 total hours ,because its all the same hour they played.

I guarantee you that number has NOTHING on the amount of seconds spent playing World of Warcraft!!!

@Ikey Heyman:

Actually, it would take 64,109 players to spend A YEAR playing Halo 3 to reach this. Not an hour.

In the 'biz we call those man-seconds. There are 2000 working man-hours per year. If you have 4 men working on a project, you get 8000 hours of work per year.

He's talking about 2 trillion man-seconds, which means that the 'average' Halo 3 player has sunk around 150 hours into the game. That means the 'average' Halo 3 player spends around 1% of his/her time playing Halo 3 online (assuming he/she bought the game on opening day). That's not too bad. Factor in we spend 1/3rd of our time sleeping, and 1/3rd of our time working. These people may very well have lives.

@F Whipple:

WoW Figures:

11.5 million subscribers * 12 hours/day * 3600 seconds/hour = 496,800,000,000 seconds/day
496,800,000,000 seconds/day + 1569 days of WoW =

779,479,200,000,000 seconds

That's a hell of a lot of wasted time.

If they somehow managed to make Halo directly affect some robot in the rainforest plant some trees or feed some sick kids in a 3rd world country... this would be good news.

Since it isn't the way things are... this is sad news.

Still probably negligible compared to Tetris or Solitaire.

Actually, I remember a presentation by the guy who made the ESP Game (for tagging images) on the potential for games to get certain kinds of boring but computationally difficult game done. He compared the yearly man-hours of worldwide computer solitaire playing with the number of man-hours it took to build the Empire State Building. The latter was far less by orders of magnitude.

Wow. I can't believe people still play this game. I have it, yes you can look me up on the bungie website and check my stats, but I stopped playing this a long time ago. Why? Because I get more than one game a year.

Halo 3 is my fallback game. When there's nothing else to play, or i just want to have a good time, Halo 3 will always be there for me.

Not surprising that many people have played it though.
