Sacred 2 will have a legal game sharing method, pirates confused and frustrated photo

CDV Software is trying something absolutely brilliant in regards to DRM. Today, the company sent out a press release saying that anyone who wants to try out the full version of Sacred 2 can. The kink is that the prospective player will need to grab a buddy’s disc and the access only lasts 24 hours. Despite the minimal amount of time, CDV is hoping that allowing players to legally share the game will curb potential piracy.

CDV director of marketing and PR Mario Kroll recently told MTV Multiplayer that they’re intention “is not to build Fort Knox (and thus surely irritating paying, legitimate customers), but instead to offer a sensible sharing solution...” Kroll goes on to say that while the title will assuredly be cracked and shared illegally, the majority of would-be thieves will “do the right thing and reciprocate” CDV’s friendly DRM approach by paying for the game.

While I’m more than happy that CDV is going for something less restrictive, I think they missed on the fact that if a pirate enjoys a game he borrows, he’ll probably still pirate it. I understand the emotional appeal, but I’m not quite sure this will improve things. What do you guys think?

It probably won't go so well this first time, but it is a step in the right direction.

I must concur that if I had to comment on this fact, then I would remark that it closely resembles a start that can be categorized as somewhat of the "good" variety.
On a similar note, I know of a few people that pirate games and play them, and if the game turns out to be good, or when the gamer gets money, they buy a copy to support the game.

This will surely grab pirates by their icy cold heartstrings and recondition them with love!

If you're aware (and rightly so) that anyone who wants to pirate the game will do so, why bother with any form of DRM at all? Today, DRM serves exactly *no* purpose, costs money and annoys paying customers. Maybe tomorrow it will disappear, or maybe it will manage to significantly decrease piracy, but now, it's pure madness.

@ Xenon

Not true, if it takes long enough to crack, then people will just get fed up and go out and buy the game, took a while for mass effect to be cracked so players could get past a certain point. I imagine others games have been like this too.

You basically want as complicated DRM as possible, without having an install limit.

The truth is, if you are going to steal something then you are going to steal something. If you could easily get the game and save yourself the money why would you? Now if it came with something you could only get for buying it then that would help. Companies either need to start adding cooler exclusives, or just include a access key that only works once.

It's not like it's a totally new Idea, Starcraft did it with their spawn versions, and how how it ended up? It's an awesome idea anyway, even if Sacred does life 90% of everything from Blizzard

That's pretty pathetic. No one is going to be satisfied with one day of access. I predict this will do virtually nothing to stop pirates.

From what I understand the game itself allows 2 activations. So from all of us to the publisher: FUCK YOU.

No offense but most of you are retarded, especially Iron Dragon. It's a foot in the right direction and a nod to those who want to share. However there was a time when you could share discs and both play with one set of discs if you were in the same room. I suggest allowing this via lan and not online. Otherwise it's nothing but a demo.

Either way it's a decent step and like previously they will sell well if not better. In fact I about guarantee it will sell better. Unlike these so called "pirates" above, if they knew anything they'd tell you that online play is Sacreds attraction and most if not nearly all online games can not be pirated. They usually have a database of legit serials.

Lol, what the fuck are you people talking about? This has got to be the most dumbfuck coalition of comments I've seen on Destructoid in a while. Do you know why the game will have this type of sharing method? Because it has been on torrent trackers for almost a month now, and no one even gives a fuck about pirating it, except for hack 'n' slash retards and they don't look too hyped about the game. From what I've read in the comments about this one, it just isn't worth the bandwidth and/or money. In situation like this CDV Software would do anything for a buck, but still, this game is going to suck so hard that giving it away for free wouldn't help the developers.

At first, i wasn't thinking of pirating this game since I didn't want to waste so many hours torrenting a game I might not like, but now thanks to this new policy, after playing this game, I'm definitely gonna pirate it since it's good!

Why not just release a large portion of the game as a demo online? At the very least they'd get more people looking at their game.

Their way you've gotta know a guy who owns it already. Why would he not just loan you the disc for a week or two when he's done with it? Unless they limit the number of installs, which would be the Fort Knox scenario the PR guy mentioned.

Whine one one, what's your emergency?

Yeah I'd like to report coddled gamers who are just asking for too much and expect it to be something that doesn't take long/takes no effort/they deserve somehow, it seems their parents didn't teach them that SHIT HAPPENS and sometimes you don't always get what you want.

It's DRM guys, get over it. Seriously if you hate it so much go grab a console. Fuck.

It's a good idea.

The majority of games pirated are done so on an almost rental basis. At least when I was in Uni in the good ol days.

You'd download a game, play it, and 9 time out of 10, never play it again.

It's good they're cutting out the middle man.

Had HL2 done that, I wouldn't have plonekd down hard cash for that pile of !!*&#!!!
