Sackboy is in your PS3, eating your data: LittleBigPlanet glitch deleting things photo

LittleBigPlanet really has had it bad since it launched. The highly promising PS3 title was delayed a week due to Muslim-themed controversy, the launch was riddled with glitches and server issues, the sales have been less than fantastic and, to top it all off, people are now having their data mysteriously delete itself. Nice.

According to reports, random parts of save data is at risk of simply disappearing, be it MGS4 level pack progress to whole swathes of user-created content. "I lost four costumes and she lost all 12 of her saved costumes, as well as losing the level status. Also we found that all of our community and saved photos were erased too," claims one unfortunate LBP fan.

It is being theorized that bloated profile data may be causing the bug to occur. Especially since this follows the MGS4 level pack release, which adds a lot of content, some believe the game is automatically deleting things when a profile gets too large. Nothing official has been said in response to these reports, so be careful out there.

At this rate, I just feel really sorry for LittleBigPlanet. To go from one of the most hotly anticipated titles of the generation to little more than a series of tragedies just isn't right.

Not many reports of this happening.
It is better to be safe than sorry, but you should mention that so far, the problem is far from widespread.

"A series of tragedies"?

Are we overreacting a little, maybe?

It's not deleting anything, it's just not saving new things. You can only have so many items in your profile before it won't save anymore. There used to be a message alerting you to this but for some reason it doesn't show anymore. Just delete some of the worthless community objects you've collected and it'll start saving again.

Yeah, it seems to happen to only really happen to people who play a ton. Still stupid, but not a huge deal

@Shipero:

From what I understand, people are losing things they've collected prior to the MGS4 pack, so it's not just a simple case of not being able to collect anything new and have it stick.

I know this is the wrong place to post this, but my friend and I are having trouble finding gamers to play LBP with. (Almost all of my friends play on the 360.) If anyone wants to play LBP, please friend me. My PSN is OneSneakyNinja.

Nothing like destructoid to turn a little "problem" into a widespread issue. I've had LittleBigPlanet since its launch day, and I've yet to experience any gitches. I've lost no data, had no online problems, and I've never had a crash or anything. This game shouldn't be bashed...it should be praised considering how well it is running, and how diverse the content is.

The game is $60 and isn't that great. I got a PS3 for Christmas and LBP was one of the first games I got (big three, Uncharted, LBP, and MGS4) and it isn't that great. Good game, but hmmm... Random deletions, if I was into this game, it would really bug me, like the Viva Pinata problems that were never fixed. Don't count on a fix for this one, it didn't sell enough to warrant one. Just live with it.

LBP didn't sell enough for a Patch?
You obviously havent played LBP, It's had around 5-6 patches already, some of them are for some rather minor issues, such as making searching levels a bit better, and improving support for USB Keyboards (which is bugged, you can't see what you're typing unless you press tab to go into the PS3 default interface). Trying to argue LBP will never be patched is a futile effort, it's already had numerous.

And of course, if it didn't happen to you, it CAN'T be an issue, right?

the thing with lbp and viva pinatas is that lbp WILL get fixed. remember warhawk in the first two months and look at it now, its a whole differant experience after a year. sony fixes their big name games if their i a problem but the only problem i have with game is that is kicks me from the lbp servers occaionally.

Patches are easy to make. As games become more and more complex it becomes less and less possible to find and fix every bug prior to release. Some people understand this, others complain about how little developers care about the products they're making.

LBP came with a lot of annoyances which are slowly being fixed. The search system is improved, if not yet perfect... They'll get to the community items issue eventually.

Nobody said it's not an issue. But the distance between that and "a series of tragedies" is a little too exaggerated.

Well, what do I know anyway, I don't even have an avatar.

I do kind of regret using the word "tragedies." After seeing how desperate people are to rush to the defense of a videogame and whine about one word in an article, I can see the real definition of the word "tragic."

We are not whining about the word, we 're just discussing. On the other hand, simply tagging anyone who posts a different opinion as a "noob/troll" or a "fanboy", isn't tragic?

You wrote your opinion in the article and we 're commenting it. Maybe you're right and it actually is "tragic", but maybe you 're not. In any case, we're discussing.

Considering so many people without avatars are just here to troll, you can't blame me for assuming you're all that way. People who want to remain members or the community and anticipate getting banned tend to use *something* to identify themselves. You all look the same to me.

That sounded like racism.

Anyway, maybe it was "over-reacting" to you, but I do find LBP tragic. I'm not even criticizing the game. It's one of the biggest reasons I got a PS3 and I think some of the stuff it offers is really good. But that's why I think it's quite tragic. No excellent, ambitious game should get caught up in the kind of bullshit that has surrounded LBP.

I'm firmly on the game's side. I wish for better for it, that's all. I don't see what's wrong there.

Everyone relax, or I'm going to get rid of my avatar. And then the next person who calls out the site's Editor-in-Chief for not having an avatar will get banned/fired.

As far as the use of the word "tragedy," it's a bit over-dramatic, for sure. But the point here is that, unfortunately, there have been a few public "issues" with the game, the first of which was its much publicized launch delay.

In all truth, it hasn't been smooth sailing for Media Molecule, but that doesn't mean that the game isn't fantastic. Calm down everyone.

@Jim:

I'm not critisizing you for the word "tragic", of course. If that's your opinion then it's perfectly fine by me. I can't do anything to change it, nor is it mandatory to do so. We're having a conversation, that's all! Hopefully, a conversation where different opinions are expressed.

My opinion is that glitches such as this, albeit not very common, are not something to bash a game for. The majority of titles today ship with problems even more serious. We're not supposed to look away of these problems, of course, but as long as these things get patched quickly (as in LBP's case so far), the player's frustration will remain low. It's almost common for titles with heavy network functions to have some problems in the first period.

@Nick:

Couldn't agree more :)

Protip: Moving from one country to another is expensive. I know for people like you, yet to move out of Mom's house, this is hard to grasp, but people who actually understand how money and savings work, it's not too difficult a concept.

Hmm. Am I the only person in the world who was never excited about LBP and still has no urge to play it?

I feel like if I wanted a level editor I'd go buy any number of PC games. Making my own stuff is boring to me. I buy games to be entertained by a developer's creativity and enthralled by a story line. I have no interest in this title, but I do agree it's sad it's had so many issues.

Now let's all take pity on Epic and Gears of War 2.
