S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat announced, looks ominous photo

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat has finally been announced, and yes, it does in fact involve a large-scale operation going horribly wrong, and revolves around you coming in to figure out why while trying not to get yourself killed.

Taking place right after the ending moments of Shadow of Chernobyl, Call of Pripyat will add things like a new interface, sleep functionality, more terrifying creatures, and additional characters. Y'know, the usual.

See that, uh ... thing up there? Does that or does that not vaguely remind you of the dog with a human head from the movie Invasion of the Body Snatchers? I'll tell you what, if there's one monster that never ceases to scare the crap out of me in games, it's the ones that resemble dogs.

Anyway, Call of Pripyat is headed for an autumn release this year on PC, but the name is a working title, so there's always a chance it could change long before then. Hit the break for the full press release.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat announced

GSC Game World is glad to announce a new project in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series – S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat (working title) for PC.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat will become a third stand-alone game in the highly-acclaimed Survival FPS S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series.

The project is slanted for release in autumn 2009.

The events of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat unfold shortly after the end of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. Having discovered about the open path to the Zone center, the government decides to hold a large-scale military "Fairway" operation aimed to take the CNPP under control.

According to the operation's plan, the first military group is to conduct an air scouting of the territory to map out the detailed layouts of anomalous fields location. Thereafter, making use of the maps, the main military forces are to be dispatched.

Despite thorough preparations, the operation fails. Most of the avant-garde helicopters crash. In order to collect information on reasons behind the operation failure, Ukraine's Security Service send their agent into the Zone center. From now on everything depends on the player.

Key game features:
• Photorealistic exclusion Zone – Pripyat town, Yanov railway station, Jupiter factory, Kopachi village and more, recreated by their true-to-life prototypes.
• New story, a number of unique characters.
• Extended system of side quests.
• New monsters: Chimera and Burer. New behaviour and abilities for all monsters.
• New A-Life system, created using the players' best-liked elements of the first two games in series.
• Emissions considerably influence the world of the Zone.
• Sleep function added into the game.
• New player's interface.
• Possibility to continue the game after completion in a freeplay mode.
• The game is developed on X-Ray engine v.1.6

I just recently watched the movie that inspired the game, it was amazing. So yeah, good news there is a sequel announced.

This reminds me - I still need to pick up Clear Skies. The first was an excellent game if a bit flawed in some areas.

fuck yeah.

seems like they have been listening to fan feedback. really though glitches and quest bugs have been the biggest problems in the last two games, however as much as i'd like it to be properly beta tested and perfect on release, i'd actually rather just play it ASAP, warts and all.

@Mirax: Which movie would that be?

FUCK I loved the first one (second was meh), but there is just something cool about surviving in such a harsh environment. You can hardly bust out your map without the fear of zombie dogs coming to take a bit of your arse off.

Hope this one is better than Clear Sky.

Please dear god, if they're going to release another collector's edition for this expansion, PLEASE let them release the FULL collector's edition in the United States. I'm still crying over the fact how Eastern Europeans get all the good collector's stuff.

Being chased by hordes of those fuckers is one of the highlights of the STALKER games.

I still need to get Clear Sky. The first one was fun, but the bugs, rough edges and generally awful dialogue have put me off buying any further installments. It's quite a lot to look past.
