Seriously though, if they do not take the DRM out, I'll probably have to pirate it. Also, if I ever play it, I'll just wait until the big mod comes out that fixes everything.
but i'm not buying STALKER 3.
i'll definitely pirate it though. they mention wanting people to buy the game on principal, yet i'm going to pirate it pretty much for that reason.
to be fair i must say i've never been a fan of the DRM used for STALKER games (securom/starforce?) but illicit fixes usually take care of them. this time the content just won't be on the disk at all, so in 5 years what do? sorry GSC, you should know better.
I'm not saying I condone this (though I have done it in the past), but I can sometimes empathize with people who feel the need to do it...
"i'll definitely pirate it though. they mention wanting people to buy the game on principal, yet i'm going to pirate it pretty much for that reason."
That makes no sense. Principle would be not playing it at all. Stealing it means a lack of principles.
no, not really. the principal i'm upholding is that i only pay for things i deem worth paying for.
don't assume everyone else is as morally (f)rigid as you are.
either way im glad this series is getting a true sequel...
even if i cant run it :(
What are you talking about? Morally frigid? Haha, what? You're confusing.
"I'm not going to pay for this" is principle. "I'm going to play for free because I want to play it" is simple greed. It's just you doing what you want to do. Seriously, principle.
@pokota
Operating under a different set of principles than yours does not mean they don't exist. Think of it this way. When Ubisoft released their always on DRM people didn't buy their game... but according to Ubisoft piracy went down as well so they've brought that terrible system back. This gives a strong message of "don't want our shitty DRM? You best be pirating the shit out of our games when we introduce it".
If sales of Stalker 2 go down AND piracy increases, I get the feeling they'll get rid of that system soon enough, or just go bankrupt since they're not a major publisher... but hey, it's their decision.
i'm sorry to have to do this, but:
prin·ci·ple
Noun:
1. A fundamental truth or proposition that serves as the foundation for a system of belief or behavior or for a chain of reasoning.
2. A rule or belief governing one's personal behavior.
my principles =/= your principals. it's not hard to understand. my "rule or belief" is that i shouldn't have to pay for something i don't deem worthy of paying for. whether i illegally obtain a copy of said thing doesn't factor into it.
all you're doing is trying to hold other people to your moral standard. that's fine, but don't do it under the pretext of me not understanding what a principle is.
now will you please stop posting that same old tired response whenever someone says they will pirate a game due to some deal breaker by the dev?
"my principles =/= your principals"
LOL. i may have meant to say principles both times, however the above statement is also true.
Sure, I'll stop posting--if you stop acting like you're some kind of a saint for playing a game for free. If might be your "principle" to steal from someone if you don't like what they're doing, but it doesn't mean I have to respect it.
Piracy doesn't even bother me that much. It just bugs me when people won't own up to the fact that they're just being greedy.
"my "rule or belief" is that i shouldn't have to pay for something i don't deem worthy of paying for"
So if you don't think a Mercedes is worth $60,000, then it's ok for you to steal it? Awesome principle, dude.
I may buy the game but only if pirates find a way of disabling the DRM, if not though? Well It could be the best game ever and I still won't touch it... I wouldn't pirate it, I wouldn;t buy it. I'd just find something else instead.
Please don't treat your devoted fans like criminals GSC! :(
dude you just don't seem to get it - nobody is claiming to be a saint. you're still projecting your own interpretation of the word "principle" onto other people. having a principle, rule, code or whatever you want to call it doesn't imply that the holder thinks they are or wants to be seen to be a saint or even good in any way. principles are pretty much by nature subjective. fuck man i even posted the definition of the word and you still don't get it.
get off the jim sterling kool aid and think about it will you?
as for the mercedes, it's a ridiculous and stupid analogy. failing to understand the difference between software piracy and stealing a physical object only makes you appear foolish.
you know what to stop this going any further off topic, let me just say that if i don't think it's worth paying $60,000 for the merc but i still want it, then i will find another way to get it. rent it, perhaps borrow it, whatever. if i could steal it, and it wouldn't make anyone worse off and i knew i wouldn't get caught then fuck yes it would be stolen in a heartbeat. now make your petty judgements about my moral code and move on, just don't make baseless assumptions and accusations when you really don't know what you're talking about.
I will submit to the DRM scheme if it will mean maximum profitability for games that I like.
But I will not be as happy as I would be if I was treated like an actual fan/consumer of a product.
We should just agree to disagree. Your principle is to play videogames for free because you get angry at the creators, and my principle is to mock people who have that as a principle. That sounds fair and even to me.
My fellow developers, I have some news for you: DRM doesn't stop piracy! Yeah! Don't you believe? Ok, a week after you launch your precious STALKER 2 I will be playing the game without DRM, and for free. Do you wanna bet?
Jesus. I have both Shadow of Chernobyl and Clear Sky. Here is my advice: if you wanna gather a new and legit fan base, DRM is the wrong way.
As someone who buys too many games dick moves like online DRM is a great way for deciding which games ill buy and which to drop. Lol its becoming quite a regular thing when I visit Dtoid.
You're a fucking idiot. Checking to see if a CD is there is what a lot of PC games do and before stuff like steam have always done.
The proper analogy (which is dead obvious) is having your PS3/Xbox 360 constantly connected to PSN/XBL and dropping you if you aren't.
it's hard to feel mocked by someone who's quick to climb on their high horse with little understanding of even their own arguments. it's like when i see a mentally handicapped person laughing at something that's not funny, it just makes me feel sorry for you.
have fun not playing games because of your principles, because that's really accomplishing something. *pats pokata on head*
And
"Getting people to love your game enough to buy a license is going to be harder when you put in DRM with a known history of pissing off large chunks of the audience. I can't say it fosters much love when I need to keep "checking in" with a company, like a criminal on parole."
I'm with you there Jim. In the quote I put at the top it just shows how confused they seem to be, because its nonsense. If people can't connect with their pirated version in order to love it enough to want to buy a license for it, because of the DRM, then they aren't going to make a sale on those licenses.. And they'll probably end up losing the sale all together.
I really don't think they're thinking this through very well.
