Rush Hour director Brett Ratner no longer attached to God of War film photo

If you're one of those people who thought that director Brett Ratner completely ruined X-Men: The Last Stand and that he's the movie industry equivalent of the Antichrist, here's some good news.

Although it's been previously reported that Ratner has been attached to direct the much-talked-about God of War film, that no longer seems to be the case. According to Production Weekly, the director has shelved the God of War film in favor of Trump Heist an Eddie Murphy/Chris Tucker flick about robbing Trump Tower.

Where this leaves the fate of the God of War film is uncertain, but the chances of it becoming a reality before God of War III hits the shelves is highly unlikely.

A God of War film is a sensitive and tricky proposition, especially given the history of cringe-worthy videogame films. How would you like to see it done right? Who do you think could bring Kratos to life?

i think the right way to do a GOW film is probably not to one at all.

Seriously a GOW movie could be like a new 300, and i'm going to be shot for this but Vin Diesel as Kratos? just a thought.

I agree let the game tell the story.

Let him go make another shitty Eddie Murphy movie.

Agree with munkee, but when does hollywood actually listen to its fans? They'll make it anyway. No Ratner is great news though.

To address Nick's other 2 questions. To do GOW right I'd like to see lots of camera shots over the shoulder like in the game, or more recently in the new game trailer. Some kind of new innovation used to bring the film to life and get people to see it besides gamers. That and have a good amount of focus on the story of Kratos rather than the action, I'm thinking along the lines of Gladiator. Great action coupled with a good story. As far as who can bring Kratos to life...the first guy who came to mind, shudder, Vin Diesel. Already big and bald, and he's got the good Kratos type voice needed.

WOW for some reason Vin Diesel is the only person I could imagine play this roll also.

I think it would be a good idea to do a retelling/adaptation of Kratos's history before becoming(and up to) Ghost of Sparta. It's done by cutscenes anyway, and there's alot more emotion/plot/conflict there that would be really nice to see all in one sitting. It would be interesting to see Kratos as a general, experience his personality before being emotionally warped by Ares.

This is great news. To say I am not a Ratner fan would be an understatement.
There is still some disturbing news that I would like to see dispelled about the GoW movie. Originally, I had heard the plans were to make it PG13. This would be a recipe for a gauranteed fail. Sticking to such a rating could never do Kratos's rage, or it's gooey consequences, any justice whatsoever. Any word on if that rating stipulation went out the door with Brett?

You know, I hate to agree to this, but Vin Diesel would be a great choice. Aside from his similar physical characteristics (build, hair, voice), I also think his involvement in the games industry would be a plus, in that he would treat the character with the appropriate amount of reverence.

As far as what director, I'd want someone who'd make it a bloody, sexy R-rated gem. What about (and I know this would never ever happen) Tarantino? He's already proven himself capable of tastefully using extreme violence.

Oh Tarantino would be great, but somehow I just don't see him going for this, but I know he would treat the medium with respect. Another that came to mind is Zack Snyder of 300 and Watchmen fame. It looks like he took Watchmen in the right direction maybe he could do the same here. He did a bloody movie in 300 so he's got the gore factor down, and Watchmen seems like he has great respect for the comic medium, maybe he can do this right.

I'm with Munkee, no movie please..

But of all the games with potential to be great films, God of War is way up on that list. It's just that the budget you would need to pull it off would kill the creativity required to do it justice.

Hence forth, no movie at all please!

I think Rational Animal made a couple of good points there.

I once hated Vin Diesel but, as time goes on, I like the guy more and more.

Tarantino would be a safe bet if you want to keep the film at an acceptable level of cool... Although, perhaps Peter Jackson may be a better choice in order to capture the kind of scale the film needs.

Can't we just play our video games? Besides, if Kratos can murder gods and *spoiler* control time *spoiler*, then he can easily climb out of the movie screen and kill the audience.

Just say NO to a God of War movie. I also think that Uwe Boll is the film equivalent to an Antichrist. So, if they are gonna do it, don't pick that guy.

Wentworth Miller(Michael Scofield) from Prison Break would be the best Kratos. Vin Diesel is too big to be Kratos ya Kratos is built but he is not huge.

Do you think we can get Danny Mcbride as the wacky sidekick?

I disagree, Tarantino wouldn't know how to do such an emotional direction that this film would require. Besides I like Robert Rodriguez better than Tarantino, He doesn't like to cut away from what's happening on screen. I like to see people getting chopped up, not before/after shots. I think this film would be best left on the shelf, honestly.
