Runner, a game made by Dtoid staff members, is now playable photo

Runner is a free, independent, downloadable game made by  Jonathan Holmes (sprite art), Ashley Davis (other art), and myself (design, programming). It was finished over the weekend (barring any huge bugs or problems), and is now available for download. You'll need Windows to play it, though.

You can get the game here (make sure to extract the RAR files into the same folder), and get the source code here if you inexplicably get the desire to clean up the code and make the game less of a ludicrous resource hog.

Please feel free to post any bug finds in the comments below, or by emailing me at reverendanthony [a t]gmail [d ot]com.

In about a week, I'll write up a postmortem/apology/explanation for the game. Until then, I'm going to try really hard to not comment on anything beyond bug reports or what have you.

I just figured out that it ends.

Clever. Though it was seemingly personal, I was more interested in what was going down in way of gameplay. So, like, good job in that department.

I'm not a huge fan. It was a lot like Battletoads, but without the music and the fun. Perhaps if I beat the game, I would have gotten more out of it, but I figure that I've got other things to do.
I'll give it another go later. As of yet, I'm not a fan.

Quick question -- a lot of you initially thought the game does not end. Was there something specific that gave you this impression?

I dunno I kept losing so I assumed their was no way to win...

I guess I suck at this.

@Anthony - I don't know, but after alot of the running and coming across the person in the road, I ran around them and then it ended as I jumped over a barrier/obsticle. Then I played again when found out I could interact with that person, and after that I failed the getting past the barriers with that person after a couple of attempts, and then after they start chasing also it ends to me when I jump over another barrier.

Putting alot of thought into it since I think I may "get" some parts to it but there's still a few other things that confuse me. DAMN YOU MR BURCH, YOUR GAME IS RAPING MY MIND.

@Anthony: I got as far as the one girl levitating and shouting stuff blocking my view. That kept up for about a minute after which I died. It didn't seem like anything else was changing, so it appeared endless to me. This coupled with the fact that it's a game made by you, where endlessly running from something that is ultimately futile could mean something, I assumed that's all there was to it.

So to answer your question curtly, not really?

Nice try, but no indie game can live up to the potential of "JFK Reloaded."

Benki:
That's the end of the game -- once you see the dedication, that means you beat the game.

Dexter:
Do you mean you only saw one girl levitate? Or did you get to a particular girl who levitated later on and found a bug where obstacles stopped appearing or something?

The game does not stop for me.

!!!!!SPOILERS!!!!!

I picked up the blonde girl with the hat, kissed my way through the last obstacles and now the two are running together for all eternity.(I tried to capture it on video, but hypercam2 fucked that one up).

However, I did get the dedications in a different playthrough, in which i let the girl pass by.

Intention or Bug?

!!!SPOILERS END!!!

btw, I just noticed the speech bubble you get when you´re flying. On previous playthroughs I never saw it, since I was flying as far to the right as I could.

That's definitely a bug...could you be more specific? The way you describe it it sounds as if you did everything right, except after those obstacles something else is supposed to happen rather than the two running for eternity.

I just finished it. No bugs that I saw although the difficulty curve was interesting. I'm going to start a thread in the forums about it as I feel discussion will probably go on for some time about this.

@Anthony - Ah right, just making sure since I saw the dedicatation in two different playthroughs, once when I ran past that person and the dedication popped up shortly after that, then at the end of the playthrough when I interacted with the person. Just making sure.

Can't wait for this write up next week, I'm pretty sure I got the idea of most of it now.
Was very interesting to play and the animation and art in it was great. Good job to all you guys who worked on the game.

Was able to recreate it :)

What I did was, I kept tapping the spacebar constantly for the last obsatcle-section. After the last obstacles are gone they just keep running, but this time they also keep kissing and I cant move them anymore.

Oh, okay! I think that makes sense. I can't recreate it myself because I'm evidently a noob at my own game, but I think I've done something that will fix that problem in the next version.

@ Anthony

I thought it didn't have an end because it took too long for the gameplay to change. When a speech bubble was over the screen, and then another, with the girls only getting closer for a few minutes I thought I had to get caught. I didn't realize until the third time or so that there was a real ending.

I myself enjoyed the gameplay to some degree. I also like the method of storytelling. It's not to vivid and not too vague.

Hmmm,a lot of thoughts in my head about this. Like some others said, I too am having Braid flashbacks. I would like to do a write up of my opinions on the game before you post your real ideas behind it. Just to say though, after about 6 or so playthroughs, trying different actions and paths, I think I know where you were going with this. Great job though, it was a really enjoyable experience, like Braid - the puzzle pieces.

Just in case, I would like to ask your permission to do a write up of my interpretation before I start on it.

Once again, bravo.

Bug... can't play the game anymore.

Whenever I start the game now (I re-downloaded it), all that comes up is an "open" dialog box for a "game" file, with the directory defaulted to My Documents.

Trying to click open brings up an error saying that "there is no game file" and the game doesn't start.

oh well

I think most people thought it didn't end because of the lack of a clear goal other than running away from the girls.

I was going to post my interpretation, but as I did it I couldn't get over some incongruence's, I don't understand if its about past relations or your sister.

I've finally finished it and I have to say I've become much more intrigued now that I've seen the various endings. During my first few times playing I didn't realize there was an actual ending as well, and I kept getting grabbed by the same girl at the same time so I thought maybe that was how it was supposed to end though it seemed kind of sudden. Luckily, my interest kept me coming back and I eventually got the typewriter and realized there was more and finished the game a couple of times. Job well done! My only complaint is sometimes it's hard to pay attention to the story bubbles and watch your character at the same time but I can see that being a conscious game play decision. Applause

Okay this is weird, I navigated to the exe file and that started the game, but now when I play a totally different game/scenario starts up with me kissing some girl... and after he starts running and I lose the girl, I get a crash, everytime.

KorJax: Mine did the same thing. Make sure you extract the files to a folder on your computer and when the dialog box comes up to find the game file browse to the folder you extracted to and select the runner.exe. That worked for me.

Heh, not bad. A bit jarring with no sound, but I suppose that isn't the point. Nice sprite work. :)

Game crashed on me unfortunately, after the visions behind me recap how I let the blond with the beret repeatedly smash into doors. ^_^

This is the message. It was right after the blond finished (or I assume finished her dialog balloons.

It turns out I'm retarded, and in trying to replace the old game files with some new fix-filled ones I screwed up the level order, so the crappy scenario with no music shows up instead of the actual game. The link should be fixed now, though -- sorry for the inconvenience. Jesus, I can't believe I did that.

Mr. Burch. I played your game 4 hours ago. I decided to write a little writeup about it.
That writeup just broke 2300 words....and counting.
There is certainly a lot to write about the game, that much is certain.

obviously the people playing it who are annoyed by the picture bubbles and don't like that aspect of the game don't realize that it's a metaphor for having your mind clouded by thoughts of things you'd rather not think about which makes it difficult to get through your daily life (daily life being the doors and barriers)

the later girl obviously shows that love can break through barriers until you ultimately mess up the relationship some how and that girl is now in your past, chasing you, and haunting you with her memory

excellent game, i just wish it was longer

I just registered here to say that I liked this game very much. It kinda remembers me of Yume Nikki, except you have to smoke a lot to get Yume Nikki's metaphors and your game doesn't scare the hell outta me.

I loved how the song synched with the gameplay - faster, when there were more obstacles. And I feel really sorry for those who abandoned the game because "it was boring".

And I didn't think the bubbles were annoyoing. All you have to do is look at the obstacles coming to you instead of staring at yourself. Pretty much how we should do in real life, too.

I see some people complaining about how those thought bubbles cover your character, but come on...they could have put those anywhere...maybe they intentionally blocked your view with them because that's part of the game, and the story....

...or I'm wrong.

Anyway, good times!

WHAT WAS THAT!!

This game has some flaws but I guess you could see them as "metaphors" or something.

Was I supposed to pick up the girl who shows up at the end of road? Am I afraid of commitment? Does that girl represent Ashly Davis? Oh god I am so confused right now. I haven't felt like this about an indie game since I played Passage.

Not sure if this is a bug or just a minor annoyance. When I got the typewriter and was in the air typing, i moved as far left as i could with the girls directly below me.

After I finish typing and the character moves back towards the ground, you can't control him, and he ends up getting caught and I had to retry.

The problem is it's a possible scenario where the player is able to accidentally put themselves in a position where they have no control over the game, and lose as a result of having control of the game being taken away. Which can be frustrating, obviously.

As for the game, I enjoyed it, and I'm pretty sure I understand the message, which is surprising, since I never understand messages in games. I was able to finish it on my second try. I found I was able to beat the game fairly easy by not paying any attention to the bubbles and focus on the movement of the character.

Makes me think that this was an intended design choice, the only way past the barriers and obstacles is to ignore or forget the memories that are preventing you from getting through them.

Good stuff.
