Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Runner, a game made by Dtoid staff members, is now playable photo

Runner is a free, independent, downloadable game made by  Jonathan Holmes (sprite art), Ashley Davis (other art), and myself (design, programming). It was finished over the weekend (barring any huge bugs or problems), and is now available for download. You'll need Windows to play it, though.

You can get the game here (make sure to extract the RAR files into the same folder), and get the source code here if you inexplicably get the desire to clean up the code and make the game less of a ludicrous resource hog.

Please feel free to post any bug finds in the comments below, or by emailing me at reverendanthony [a t]gmail [d ot]com.

In about a week, I'll write up a postmortem/apology/explanation for the game. Until then, I'm going to try really hard to not comment on anything beyond bug reports or what have you.

Downloading now. Anticipation. At least some. You better deliver.

Hmm, I can't get it to work. It brings up an open program dialog box, looking for game.exe or something. Am I doing it wrong?

Been waiting for this. Will play it now, even though I'm at work. Or especially since I'm at work.

@Char: did the same thing for me. In the dialog box, open Runner.exe. And then wait for like a minute.

@Char -- try manually unpacking all the files into a folder before running. Running it from the zip may cause diarrhea.

Playing it in like 2 more minutes....

Are the speech or whatever bubbles suppose to cover me as I run? Am I thick and is it suppose to be a metaphor for something else?

I like it, but it gets pretty frustrating with the bubble getting in the way you run and you can't head back.

So, I've played it, though I'm holding my impressions for your postmortem/explanation. The only thing I'll say is that you don't need to write an apology.

BUG report:
You can pass the "barriers" (not the door type things) though if you go to the far top right without getting hit.
Wedge's Avatar
Wedge at 04/20/2009 15:12
And you can jump to pass through doors without hassle (though this may be intentional, as it shows an animation when you do so), so you can stand in the upper right corner and spam jump and you never get slowed down. However even if you are never slowed down once you get caught, so all of that sort of seems beyond the point.

Really interesting game. I was excited to see what your game was going to be liked. I'm not sure I understand it yet (especially the girl punching a ninja in the face :) ), so I look forward to some of your explanations. Is this the finished version or are there still some tweaks and additions to be made?

Thanks for the quick bug find, guys -- I've updated the linked version, so that shouldn't be an issue anymore. Shouldn't be.

Also, if I don't respond to direct questions about the game's subject matter, it's not because I'm intentionally trying to be a dick. I just don't want to color anyone's perspectives on the game in any way.

ygro wok:
Apart from whatever fixes I'll be making this week to combat bugs you guys find, this is the final version of the game.

Do you have all the files from the rar in the same folder when you run the EXE?
Justin Villasenor's Avatar

The first time I extracted the rar it only gave me the exe, for some reason. I re-downloaded it and tried again and it gave me all the files the second time.

If its open source, then does that mean its open for rape? Little Rev confirmed for MUGEN?

Tried and failed too many times. Going to just look at the source code.

I understand the meaning behind blocking you from seeing the on coming obstructions, but when there is potential for a "there is no end, suck on that" situation, I loose motivation to carry on. It'll be interesting to see what the code turns up :)

Question for those who have played the game, how would you have liked it if Anthony turned into Ghost Rider if he didn't get the first power-up?

Just asking.

I have finished the game. I think I get what was going on, but I don't want to give any feedback on the off chance that it "spoilers" other people's playing.

A few clever parts, a few parts that feel clunky. I'll be interested in seeing your own opinion of what it all means.

My only comment so far is that I'm not keen on the choice of music. It's a nice piece but it doesn't suit a game called "runner". Undercurrent in 1. made sense because it had the same style of music, yet was upbeat and fitting for the urgency of that world. I'm going to give it another play through before I decide.
IroN1c's Avatar

I'd like to know how all of the involved feel, now that it has been released. What reactions were you seriously expecting? How does it feel to see the comments pop up and read them? Mission accomplished? You don't have to answer it here, do it in the postmortem, Podtoid, forum, whatever or don't do it all, but I'm sure you planned to answer that anyway.

On a side note:
Interesting how you gave the girls names. Also, dickbutt.

I don't think I'm going to rape the game though. It's tempting but...you've just earned some more respect. I'm really interested in reading the explanation to see if it matches with my thoughts. Even if it doesn't, I still got something personal out of it or at least it got me thinking about something that's of personal value. That's great.

Not a fan.

Design decision or not, having speech bubbles directly obstruct your field of view of what you are playing on in order to offer an extremely unclear and visually "busy" story background isn't my idea of an enjoyable or "enlightening" (if the latter is what you were going for).
UglyDuck's Avatar
UglyDuck at 04/20/2009 17:46
Bug. It happened about the time I got the typewriter thing. I was behind the point where the three of them line up when I collected the powerup, so I think that did something. Anyway, the dark redhead one just ran off into the distance and them mysteriously appeared at the end with a clone.
