RuneScape now has more than 200 million player accounts
Whoa! I knew people liked RuneScape, but 200 million registered accounts? That's obscene, even for a free-to-play MMO. To celebrate, Jagex has put together an infographic that has such tidbits as "players catch more than 8 billion fish every year." These are the things I like to know about. "When the game was first released, nobody could ever have expected it would reach such high levels of popularity largely by community word of mouth," said Jagex CEO Mark Gerhard. "It has been an incredible journey to get to where we are today, and by continuing our tradition of constantly innovating, evolving and lovingly crafting RuneScape we are certain to continue to break records by creating an online adventure like no other." It seems they've also added a demon with 200 million hit points to the game, because sure, why not? Be on the lookout for a unique item that can be used to slay the beast. Looking over the comparison screenshots in the gallery below, it's abundantly clear that it has been many, many years since I've played RuneScape. Did you know? Legacy Comments (will be imported soon)I've never understood the popularity of runescape when there were/are a large variety of significantly better f2p MMOs. Guess it has to do with it being browser based to attract preteens who share a computer with parents. Jesus, this looks way prettier than the last time I played it. (Back in 2004, maybe?) Anyway, good on 'em for staying around for so long. That's an interesting stat, but from what I remember of my days on Runescape, totally impossible for them to support. Last I logged in, they had 100 servers that served 2000 people a piece, so most they could support at one time would be like, 20,000. One of my friends was into this borderline hardcore years ago. I didn't even realize it was still in existence. Loved Runescape. Was the first MMO I sank a lot of time into. I haven't played it in ages, but I'll log in on occasion to see my items lol Holy shit, the graphics aren't terrible anymore! Man, I used to love this game. People play it because of how easy it is to get a bunch of your friends playing it when you're in elementary-middle school. I have some great memories with that game, good to see they are doing well so that more kids can have similar experiences that I did. I honestly can't believe this game is still running. As oldschool UO player, this game was the foot of many jokes back in 2001. I'll be damned... I'll bet 200,000 GP (all that was left on my old account before I quit) that at least 25% of those are bots made by RWTers. Part of it may be the upcoming overhaul of the battle system, which is looking to make combat more skill based than about who grinded just a little bit more.
It's really the only mmo I ever liked. One of the reasons it got really popular was that kids could play it at school or at libraries. School computers restricted installation of new software so browser-based games dominated. 8:30 PM on 05.23.2013 Black Ops 2's Revolution DLC has a free trial weekendCall of Duty: Black Ops 2's Revolution map pack will be free to play on Xbox 360 this weekend, Activision's Dan Amrich announced, who only confirmed the promotion for Microsoft's console.
