Run for the 8-bit border: Taco Bell offering Atari classics photo

Thanks to Destructoid community member LostCrichton, I know what I'm eating for lunch today -- Taco Bell.

The fast food chain is apparently running a promotion with Atari, giving out PC/Mac versions of its classics with every kids meal. Four games (ports of the arcade titles) are available: Centipede, Lunar Landing, Super Breakout, and Asteroids.

Not in the market for a beefy five-layer burrito? You can purchase the games separately for about $1.50 a piece, so you can collect them all for around the price of a value meal. Hey, more tacos for me.

[Thanks, LostCrichton!]

Hmmm Centipede. Been a while since I played it. Unfortunately I am disgusted by TacoBell's stuff. It's an insult to actual mexican food.

I will buy them just not eat there. I'll go to the real Mexican restaurant down the street.

I guess I can stomach 4 kids meals.

Or I could just buy them and avoid severe stomach complications.

The only problem is that I can go to one of my local game stores and buy original cartridges those games for a 50 cents. It's much cheaper and I don't have to eat Taco Hell and get E Coli.

*sigh*

I miss real game box art like that. And arcades. And B/W switches.

Don't forget the free diarreha that comes with every meal! You can't put a price on that! It's always the little things that matter most.

Well, at least it'll let a new generation experience a next to forgotten age in video games. Although judging by the attention span and expectations of kids nowadays it won't get too far. :)

It's going to take a lot more than that to get me to eat at Taco Bell though. Not to mention I've got 3 of those 4 games already in cart form.

Now that developers have the capacity to make games that look as good as their box art, does it not strike anyone as a missed opportunity that Atari ( or some other developer ) does not create even a loose adaptation based upon the box art above?

3d mechanics for navigating asteroids, and piloting a drop ship in different gravities seem like a great way to add mini games/diversity/side quests to fps or 3ps.

Does anyone remember being a little kid, and picking a game based on it's box art only to be disappointed by vector or 8bit? I do. I wanted to play what I saw on the box. In all the discussions of remakes of retro games to current 3d graphics I've read here, or heard on podtoid - we often do not note that these games were originally marketed to us as 3d storyboard / box art. A bait and switch.

I for one wouldn't mind if Atari finally delivered 3d lunar lander and asteroids. Would you?

I can't imagine kids latching onto Atari 2600 games today.

I mean, as a kid, I loved Pitfall during the Super Nintendo era, but the difference is night and day

Aww hell. I got second place in a speech contest in second grade for a speech about Lunar Lander. Some dick beat me out for his speech about Hiawatha.

Next year's Zelda speech tanked completely though.

Hey, $6 for 4 games isn't so bad. I might actually step into a Teco Bell for the first time.

What a great incentive to get kids of this generation into games that aren't readily available to them. I think I might have to go pick up some for myself.

The beefy five layer burrito is 2% beef, 8% tortilla and 90% cheese sour cream bean sludge. Normally I like Taco Bell, but that thing triggered my gag reflex.
