Rumortoid: Zune HD a portable game console and media player photo

God. Stop me if you've heard this or something like this before: The new Zune will play games. The new Zune will have an iTunes-like App store. The new Zune can teleport people and increase your penis size. If I had a nickel for every time I heard something about the new Zune, well, I would have enough to buy stock in the new Zune.

It's coming, and from everything we've been hearing, E3 is the big debut. People are starting to talk about it a lot, and it looks like TeamXbox is going through something that we've gone through from time to time. Like us, they broke a story a long time ago on the internets. Months later, when it's more relevant, people start talking about it like it is new news.

Get this: TeamXbox had plenty of hot info on this new Microsoft gaming and multimedia wonder in January, says Joystiq. They all sound like recent rumors on system stats and services coming up lately. This sort of PSP/iPhone mashup allegedly would be able to grab your Xbox Live content, let you access the marketplace, hop on the Zune store, and even play Live Arcade games. Allegedly.

I'll be glad when this is all finalized and done. Or when I get my nickels.

The Zune being able to connect with the current XNA framework is a pretty big plus, but I don't see big developers like Square-Enix making games for it like the iPhone/Touch.

I always said that if the PS3 could play PSP games...the PSP would never have had a lack of games. Zune 2.0 can play XBLA games sounds good to me. This could bolster XBLA ten fold...that is if the portable is even worth it. Can't wait to see more.

If it's able to access the XBLA, I'd get one just for that. Portable remade Turtles in Time? Yes, please.

@funran

it was still predictable as fuck, I mean the PSP, the iPhone, the DSi and they keep saying they are not intereested in protable gaming? I called bullshit since the beginning. Things are beginning to take form even if its a damn rumor

Guys what the hell, i just expressed what I felt from all the fake denial from Microsoft.

So whatever.

I agree with Monodi, this is an obvious move Microsoft needs to make to not only show dominance in the field of gaming, but to merely compete with what the iPod Touch has to offer. Even if this is not a fully true rumor, Microsoft would be idiotic to leave the possibility of games out for later down the line.

I said this would happen a few days ago.

Zune has always been MS big failure, so its natural MS would want to correct that. Turning that tech towards a games/media player, and pluggin those holes Apple haven't filled can only be to their credit.

XBLA games in my pocket, and the possibily of XNA games too. I'd certainly buy one.

On the team microsft page it said this thing was even taking on Google, and i quote:

"According to one source, Microsoft will address several competitors with this handheld: Apple, Sony, Nintendo…and Google? “Yes, Google,” the source said. Is the device really that far-reaching that it can serve as a competitor to Google? This Microsoft mobile device will supposedly offer many Live Search services, such as Maps, News, Traffic and Video, and in this way, Microsoft would be counter-attacking the Google phones without competing with its Windows Mobile customers that manufacture mobile phones."

I don't really see gaming taking off on "platforms" like the iphone and the zune hd. I mean, I have an iphone and I have a few games for it but when I'm playing them I don't consider it "gaming" and I'm pretty sure most people are in the same boat as me. it's a way to pass time. if I really wanted to have a gaming experience I'd play something on my nintendo ds, since the controls are better (iphone's touch screen has that slight delay inherent to its touch mechanism that makes any game that requires some precision a nightmare) and the game library is wider.

applications though, that's a different story. if the zune integrates apps the way the iphone has, then it'll definitely be the better media machine. I already thought that the zune 2.0 (the 80gb version) was better than the ipod 80gb and 160gb models - but not quite as good as the iphone/itouch because of the app and touch functionality. I'm foreseeing microsoft making quite a dent in apple's stranglehold on the handheld media market with this incarnation of the zune, if they do it right.

As someone who has never owned an iPod or Zune of any kind (all my mp3 players have been built into cell phones), I will only buy this under two conditions. First, XBLA support would have to be confirmed. I have over 50 XBLA games so I have a lot of incentive to get a portable device to play them on. I'm a bit concerned about controls though, so I'd want the device to be compatible with a 360 controller, either through wireless or USB. I don't think you could make a portable Zune with controls that would work well for games like Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix or The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai. Unless they come up with a ground breaking control scheme, they're gonna need 360 controller support. I get the feeling that the device will be touch screen only though, everything is lately.
