The above picture says it all. Not content to (allegedly) copy the Wii's motion controls, Microsoft is now possibly introducing its own take on Nintendo's Mii characters with these customizable avatars.
This is once again pure rumor, but comes from the same leak that brought us Marvel Zombies and Forza 3, so it looks pretty likely. Nintendo has Miis, Sony has Home (one day) and now Microsoft is set to have avatars.
All I'll say is, the Xbox 360 can copy the motion controls, it can copy the Miis, but unfortunately for Microsoft, it will never copy the profits. The 360 should focus on what it does well, and not try to create a less popular alternative to an established product that has cornered its market. Some people can't see the wood for the Wiis, though.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
This is just the product of that two am conference where they have images of the Nintendo Mii's on the projector, with 10 lawyers giving input on what they could and what they couldn't sue you for copying.
I'm forced to agree with your sentiment, but I just hope that one day I'll be able to traverse the LIVE space. Just think of the possibilities! Meeting and greeting various racists and biggots, gawking at Halo Wars banners, and drinking in the Viva Pinata Cantina.
I don't care about the Mii ripoff thing, I'm just mad about those generic little characters in that picture. I feel Little Big Planet has it right. Don't aim that close to home (no pun in tended).
They don't need to match the success of the Wii and be profitable because they didn't spend money on the r&d. Nintendo did that and they market tested the freaking idea for them.
Fucking Microsoft.
"Is Microsoft really that desperate? Or do they just not have any games worth a damn?"
LOL.
Yeah, the Wii has TONS more great games than the 360.
That was sarcasm.
Too bad my console was banned :(
Hmmm? HMMMMMM?
Question: How do get the hardlycore to understand or play Nintendo?
Answer: Simply stamp Microsoft or Sony onto a Nintendo idea.
I remember rumble feedback in a controller was a gimmick until Sony copied it, then it became 'real' gaming.
Maybe we're reading different threads, but I see hardly anybody warming to this idea.
what's the point if i can make a picture with my xbox vision cam and then show how i am offline?
Answer: Simply stamp Microsoft or Sony onto a Nintendo idea."
Wow. So now a videogame system being marketed to my grandmother is now somehow COMPLEX? Yeah, I was wondering why they decided to make the controls single button presses and gestures..
Shit, how did I miss that?
I for one welcome our new avatared motion-controllered Xbox overlords. Why not copy something that people like. Imagine if nobody copied Ford's idea of the car. Can you imagine the Ford fanboy's when the first Chevy drove off the assembly line, " pfft, Ford had four wheels and an engine first. Lame."
Like I was sayingm, When I play my Wii the only thing I can think of is playing those games with better graphics. I'm a graphics whore, I admit that. The smeary, grainy, non-antialiased graphics of the Wii on my HDtv just don't do it for me. Why not on Xbox or PS3?
Great, little avatars, why not? You know you are going to make one. I am. I like the whole Home idea and plan to use it on my PS3. SO, why not a Home like thing on 360?
The thing is that all this stuff has been done before. Wii-mote isn't the first motion controller out there. It is much more advanced than some of those little games that plug into the TV, but it is still the same idea. Wii isn't the first use of avatars to represent a computer/video game user. Home isn't the first use of avatars interacting with each other in a virtual space. Live isn't the first online match making system out there. Companies copy what is appealling to people.
Xbox is doing just that, and I welcome it. I personally will enjoy these new features.
@necrozen: Most people don't even notice. Congrats, you are ahead of the curve!
ZombieSpaceLord, you instantly win a thousand internets for the Simpsons reference there. That is all.
Hurray, I get to sit idly by as the mass of society celebrate mediocrity. Can I have what's behind door number 2?
