Rumortoid: Xbox 360 pro being phased out? photo

At the time of writing, the Xbox 360 has three SKUs officially on the market -- the HDD-less Arcade, the 60GB Pro and the 120GB Elite. If fresh intel is reliable, however, it seems that Microsoft will be literally cutting out the middle man, removing the Xbox 360 pro from its lineup.

Kotaku was handed a photo of some new Xbox 360 packaging that contains no details on the 360 Pro. Previous packaging listed the various SKU options, telling customers what they can get out of the Arcade, Pro or Elite. The new packaging on the right only contains details of the Arcade and Elite. Comparing that to the older packaging on the left, and you can see the difference.

On its own, this may not be that big of a deal, but there has been gossip about the termination of the 360 Pro for a while now, and this is pretty much sealing the deal. It surprised me at first, but I suppose it makes sense. If you want storage, you want as much storage as you can get, and the Pro was pretty much rendered obsolete by the 120GB Elite.

I have a feeling they'll drop the Elite to the Pro price to make room for a Natal bundle at the current Elite price.

At the time of writing, when was that? It's almost been a year since the pro turned 60go.

weird, over here (australia) the pro is 60gb, and i'd heard they might be phasing out the elite. Strange. Are the elites a really ugly greyish black over there too?

I can't quite make it out from this pic, but the new box looks like it included the same cables in the Arcade and Elite bundle. Does this mean the Arcade will come with Component Cables now?

Check your facts there, Jimmy. The Pro has 60gb of space.

Maybe the box was for a pro, and putting in information about it seemed like a redundant waste of ink?

Ah yes the middle child. Make things easier with just two choices. Hopefully this means Elite will be cheaper.

Both boxes are for the Arcade.

Unless they plan a price drop on the 120GB elite, this is an absolutely stupid move. I work at a games retail store and the Pro is our best selling 360, with the arcade in a close second. I have never sold an elite. Many people want a 360 because its cheaper than a PS3, M$ needs to maintain that advantage.

agreeing with the price drop thing. except i doubt that will happen. in the long run i dont really care either way since i already own a pro that works just fine.

I'm really hoping they have a price drop on the Elite, otherwise this is a very, very stupid move. The ONLY reason I was able to afford a 360 with a hard drive was the Pro. And besides, 120GB is totally overdoing it. 60GB is far more than enough. I'm not going to pay for something I don't need.

@Crabman: Both come with composite cables now.

I'm fine with this (already owning a 360), provided that either the Arcade finally gets that silver trim on the DVD tray or the Elite is finally offered in white. I want the option of buying a new 360 that looks like the one I have in case mine kicks the bucket for good down the road. And I hate that I even have to consider that possibility.

Makes sense with all the games on demand stuff, they must be adding a bigger hard drive for the new elite.

@ Gamechamp

120GB isnt really over doing it, what with lots of Games having big DLC like Fallout's 5 Packs, the ability to install Games from the DVD to your HDD, Arcade Games, Map Packs.

Not to mention the coming Games on Demand Service which now has 360 Games along with the Original Games...

120GB really isnt overdoing it at all these days

This sucks. The price for the elite is way too high for just a bigger HDD.

120GB will replace the 60gig, probably even for the same price (given how much cheaper it is to produce now, and Microsoft's profitability). Woohoo!

@Gamechamp

Once you start installing games, 60GB fills up pretty quick.

This would be good. 20 gb is NOT enough. I bought an arcade, and got the 20 gb refurbished from MS during a deal for only $30. After installing Oblivion and Fallout addons, the thing was pretty much full. Finally caved and got a 120, and after installing lots of games to my HDD that thing is almost half way full.
Seriously though, every 360 should have come with a HDD. I don't know why MS decided to make the "Wii" edition with no storage. I don't know anyone who bought an Arcade who didn't subsequently have to purchase a HDD in the near future.

Still having only 20gb blows for me, but I'm hesitant to fork over so much money for a larger one. I can live with only one game installed at a time.

nooo i love the white xboxes, thats why i havnt bought an elite yet, i don't really give two shits about hdmi, i just want my old still working (touch wood) xbox 360. If it had a fleshlight peripheral i would make sweet love with it.

Let's hope Natal's model includes a much needed (and delayed) fix to the piss poor hardware, you know, RRoD, E074 and all that crap.

Well removing the HDMI and Component Cables would certainly reduce the cost of the Elite package (not to mention the reduction in production costs!!). Doesn't really deserve the name "Elite" if they do that though IMHO

There really isn't anything that makes the elite worth charging that extra money. A hdd isn't worth it for sure.

i didnt read all the comments...
but i am happy if this gets phased out.

working in a retailer that sells this stuff, it's kind of annoying to have to explain to every customer three different options that are practically the same, save for hdd space.

... I don't actually get why they have an Arcade model. 256MB of memory won't store much if anything... so no access to demos, XBL games, etc. It's cheap... and I guess you get what you pay for, but I wonder if new gamers know what they're not getting? Personally I would think getting rid of the Arcade would make more sense... but I guess then they wouldn't have a $200.00 console on the market.

Only thing that nudges me the wrong way about those boxes is the fact that... Well I thought all Arcades, or at least newer Arcades would be shipping with 512mb. This was reported on over a month ago... yet the boxes still show a 256mb store space. Just throwing that out there.

@Infininja: Only Composite cables, even with an Elite? Soft. I play on a SDTV and playing though component actually does make a difference: better colours and crisper edges, IMO.

@Elsa: because for those of us that don't really care about online it means a 100 bucks cheaper purchase. I would have bought an arcade X360 a while ago if it wasn't for the constant reports of the damn things dying left and right.
