Rumortoid: Wii version of Rock Band 2 bundle won't see release until early 2009

Rumortoid: Wii version of Rock Band 2 bundle won't see release until early 2009 photo

Hey Wii owners, if you had any Christmas parties planned around Rock Band 2, here's some harrowing news: the game/instrument bundle may not see release in 2008.

Our GameStop moles just shot us an image of a disturbing email, one that says the Wii version of the Rock Band 2 bundle has been delayed until January 2009. More specifically, the email details that the game will ship on January 6, and that reservation customers will be contacted by an automated, dream-crushing call.

Note that this email only mentions the "bundle" (which ships with one guitar, a microphone, and drums); there's no indication that the standalone game, which MTV Games and Harmonix say is slated for a vague "December 2008" release, will be delayed.

We'll be bothering the folks at MTV Games and Harmonix to see what's up. In the meantime, Wii owners keep your pants on ... there's always Wii Music, and that game doesn't use any peripherals, man. (And it also features "Yankee Doodle," whereas Rock Band 2 certainly does not.)

[Update: Harmonix PR master and all-around nice guy John Drake told Destructoid's Samit Sarkar, "We're working on it," when asked about this delay. The standalone game will for sure be available by Christmas.]

[Update 2, 10/24/08: MTV Games tells us that the Wii Rock Band 2 bundles should ship in late December. Crisis averted. Someone should tell GameStop.]

I know Harmonix is "punk rock" and all that, but does that mean they have to hate making money?

To just toss the entire Wii Holiday audience to GH:WT like this just seems like financial suicide.

Damn, Yankee Doodle makes Wii Music a launch day purchase or me.

That's okay, the fact that Harmonix gives the Wii yet another PS2 port instead of a current gen port would keep me from handing them my money for an inferior product anyway.

@NukaCola:

Fuck you and the rest of you fanboys who judge based on the console. This coming from someone who owns a Wii, a PS3, a PS2, and a PC that will kick the asses of all of them.

@BigZ:

Harmonix has confirmed that the Wii version will be equal to the PS3/XB360 version in capability, including DLC. Graphics ... well, not much of a choice there. The PS2 with be the only gimped version out there.

@Jon:

Agreed. Activision must be rubbing their hands with glee right now.

I hope this isn't true. I was planning on purchasing this for my parents as a Christmas gift. It was THE gift idea for them. Guess there's always Guitar Hero but I think Rock Band 2 will be the better game.

NukaCola is right though.
I own a Wii and a 360 and there is no way in hell I would have gotten the Wii version.
Anybody who really expected the Wii version of Rock Band to be comparable to the 360 or PS3 version was delusional.
The biggest draw for RB is the DLC and I KNOW my 360 has that covered.
The fact that this is delayed doesn't surprise me at all.

@ John B:

LOL for calling me a fanboy, I happen to like all the consoles and PC too, thank you very much.

@ John B the Internet Tough Guy

News flash: The wii version of Rock Band / Guitar Hero suck. Big time. Calling people fanboy doesn't prevent us from seeing that you certainly are one. ^_^

Fanboy of what? If Microsoft would put out 360s that don't RRoD, I'd have one of those, too. So exactly what does that make me a fanboy of? Tell me, if you think you're so fscking smart!
