Rumortoid: Wii getting a price cut the first week of Oct. photo

There's only one system hanging on now. One system that refuses to drop its price like everyone else is doing. It's that darn Wii, and so far Nintendo has been denying it will be giving a price drop any time soon. However, Kotaku is reporting that they've uncovered a Walmart ad that has information on it that says a "rollback" for the Wii will be coming the first week of October. No price was mentioned. I believer that "rollbacks" are Walmart's term for a price cut so if this is true we should be seeing a lower price on the Wii far sooner than anyone expected.

The Wii's sales have been slumping, although this past month Nintendo continued to sell the most systems, so maybe Nintendo is planning to reignite the sales with this cut. They also have New Super Mario Bros. and Wii Fit Plus landing, so a price cut could really propel their sales numbers back to printing money levels. Nintendo has responded by saying they don't respond to rumors and speculation. Would a price cut get you to pick up a Wii? That Metroid Prime Trilogy has been beckoning you, hasn't it?

They have to deny it till right before it happens, because if they hint at it *BAM* they just lost sales at the current price.

They need it, what with the PS3 and 360 now at cheaper prices.

My guess, they drop the price of the console, then stop releasing them without a game like New Mario packaged in for the original, pre-dropped, price.

I find it unlikely that they'll drop the price anytime soon. They're not competing with Sony and Microsoft, they're competing with consumer disinterest in gaming. Lowering the price of the Wii would be admitting that system's value has diminished. Nintendo doesn't want that. That's why their games still cost what they did initially at retail. To them, price cuts diminishes the value of their hardware and software, so they'll fight off price cuts of any kind off for as long as they absolutely have to.

They'll more than likely ride the remainder of the year with no price cut, especially with New Super Mario Bros. for the Wii coming out. After that, it'll hinge on the games that comes out next year, if we'll see a price cut or not.

It is about damn time. Good on Nintendo for making so much with the Wii, but the system should have retailed at $200 from the start, like all of their other consoles in history. And at this point, when you can get a gimped 360 for less, or a rockin' 360 for like $50 more than a Wii, it's a little ridiculous that they have hung onto the $250 price point for this long.

But again, they've still been selling, and it's more money for them, so you can't really fault them.

"but the system should have retailed at $200 from the start, like all of their other consoles in history. "

BUT all of their other consoles did NOT ship with a game, did they? N64 didn't and GameCube didn't... The way I see it, the Wii is a $220 system with a $30 game included. I do agree that it should have been $200 from the start, but it's justified due to it being shipped with a game.

The price cut would have to be down to zero to get me to buy a Wii. I'd rather save my money and get The Beatles: Rock Band or a PS3 Slim or any of the games coming out by Christmas.

Why should it have been retailed at $200 from the start when they have sold so many consoles by starting at $250. Nintendo knew they were going to sell. Another thing, it did come with a game and some Wii Channels already in so I think the $250 price was fine. You were practically paying $400 for a 360 and a game if you wanted to play something with it.

Screw the Wii. It's absolutely worthless to me. I'd rather buy anything else.

I think it would be wise for Nintendo to take the opportunity to announce a price cut or at least release the black Wii console in time for the holiday season. That along with the Wii Sports Resort and the upcoming releases of New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Wii Fit Plus would most likely allow Nintendo to be the best hardware and software seller for the rest of the year.

Even with NSMB Wii, Wii Sports and Wii Fit Plus potentially high software sales for the holiday season, Nintendo could use a new tactic to combat the cut throat strategies of Sony and Microsoft who aren't afraid of significantly lowering the price of their hardware (which they've done multiple times already).

I don't think there will be a Wii HD or anything like that because it pretty much goes against the idealogy of what Nintendo has set out to accomplish with Wii and quite frankily, Nintendo has surpassed its own expectations for the Wii's success. For one, its demonstrated how important the expanded audience is. Secondly, it has shown the importance of video game controller evolution especially with both Sony and Microsoft following in its footsteps.

What DeusPayne said. De facto price drop through a $250 bundle with New Super Mario Bros. bundle or Wii Sports Resort (with MotionPlus) or another controller or something.

Would a price cut convince me to buy the same console that I bought upon release, hated, and sold?

Yeah, probably.

One system that refuses to drop its price like everyone else is doing.

That's because it started out so damn cheap in the first place. If you don't count the Pro 360, which I believe Microsoft is trying to phase out now, the 360 and PS3 are still more expensive. That's why so many people got Wiis early on.

They might as well or they might actually have to start trying to sell consoles again.

Congratulations you wasted $250 and you're bragging about it on the internet! Your family must be so proud! =D

@ Magnalon,

It does before I'm ever buying one. So far it's far too expensive, in my opinion, for what it is. $250? no thanks.

I can see a price cut working for them. I was holding out on getting a PS3 until the price dropped. The software lineup for the Wii is pretty damn good for the next 6 months or so, so much so that I almost didn't get that PS3. So a price cut right now could be very attractive to some.

The best selling console still needs a price cut? I'm not sure on that logic.

Also, I pretty sure every other Nintendo console started at a 250$ price points, I specifically remember the gamecube dropping price a few months in after release due to shitty sales (way more shitty than what the Wii is having currently, which are in fact still pretty damn good). I'm not saying it won't, I'm just saying I doubt it happens before Christmas.

The Wii could have been $99 at launch, I doubt it'll be dropped that much for a long time, but a $199 Wii seems likely soon.

Could care less for a price drop. I want my black Wii I was promised along with various other colors at launch. I don't want it to be self conscious next to my black 360 and PS3.

Cool, if it goes to 149.99, I'll consider grabbing one. After I mod it, it'll be like a PSP. All the crappy games put together still can equal a few good ones.

I doubt it, personally. But it might be cool if I was proven wrong. If people want this, teasing details that the price MIGHT drop could pressure Ninty into dropping it to encourage those who will wait for these rumors to bear fruit to buy.
