There's only one system hanging on now. One system that refuses to drop its price like everyone else is doing. It's that darn Wii, and so far Nintendo has been denying it will be giving a price drop any time soon. However, Kotaku is reporting that they've uncovered a Walmart ad that has information on it that says a "rollback" for the Wii will be coming the first week of October. No price was mentioned. I believer that "rollbacks" are Walmart's term for a price cut so if this is true we should be seeing a lower price on the Wii far sooner than anyone expected.
The Wii's sales have been slumping, although this past month Nintendo continued to sell the most systems, so maybe Nintendo is planning to reignite the sales with this cut. They also have New Super Mario Bros. and Wii Fit Plus landing, so a price cut could really propel their sales numbers back to printing money levels. Nintendo has responded by saying they don't respond to rumors and speculation. Would a price cut get you to pick up a Wii? That Metroid Prime Trilogy has been beckoning you, hasn't it?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
They'll more than likely ride the remainder of the year with no price cut, especially with New Super Mario Bros. for the Wii coming out. After that, it'll hinge on the games that comes out next year, if we'll see a price cut or not.
But again, they've still been selling, and it's more money for them, so you can't really fault them.
BUT all of their other consoles did NOT ship with a game, did they? N64 didn't and GameCube didn't... The way I see it, the Wii is a $220 system with a $30 game included. I do agree that it should have been $200 from the start, but it's justified due to it being shipped with a game.
Even with NSMB Wii, Wii Sports and Wii Fit Plus potentially high software sales for the holiday season, Nintendo could use a new tactic to combat the cut throat strategies of Sony and Microsoft who aren't afraid of significantly lowering the price of their hardware (which they've done multiple times already).
I don't think there will be a Wii HD or anything like that because it pretty much goes against the idealogy of what Nintendo has set out to accomplish with Wii and quite frankily, Nintendo has surpassed its own expectations for the Wii's success. For one, its demonstrated how important the expanded audience is. Secondly, it has shown the importance of video game controller evolution especially with both Sony and Microsoft following in its footsteps.
Yeah, probably.
That's because it started out so damn cheap in the first place. If you don't count the Pro 360, which I believe Microsoft is trying to phase out now, the 360 and PS3 are still more expensive. That's why so many people got Wiis early on.
@Crunshii
Congratulations you wasted $250 and you're bragging about it on the internet! Your family must be so proud! =D
Good comeback, Xero.
It does before I'm ever buying one. So far it's far too expensive, in my opinion, for what it is. $250? no thanks.
Opinions. People have them.
Also, I pretty sure every other Nintendo console started at a 250$ price points, I specifically remember the gamecube dropping price a few months in after release due to shitty sales (way more shitty than what the Wii is having currently, which are in fact still pretty damn good). I'm not saying it won't, I'm just saying I doubt it happens before Christmas.
