Rumortoid: Valve, EA to reveal Left 4 Dead 2 at E3 next week photo

E3 is right around the corner, and Destructoid has been hearing all sorts of juicy rumors. A lot of things are being said, and among them a very reliable source has informed us that Valve and Electronic Arts are looking to reveal Left 4 Dead 2 at E3 next week.

L4D 2 will see four different survivors battling the infected horde as they try to survive the game's four scenarios. The game is said to be set during the same time frame and locations as the first title, but the four new survivors will be fighting off the infected in other parts of the same locations. To us, it sounds a bit like Ada sidequests from Resident Evil 4 -- while Leon was going through his mission, Ada was running around the same areas, doing her own thing.

We're also told to expect new guns, as well as a variety of melee weapons like a baseball bat, axe, and chainsaw. Players should also brace themselves to come face to face with at least one new special infected "boss" character... something big. And fast.

If what we're hearing is solid, Left 4 Dead 2 is planned for the PC and Xbox 360. While the information we received was vague, the source had been reliable in the past, and the idea of a sequel to Destructoid's 2008 "Game of the Year" was too exciting not to share. If this pans out, we hope to see more -- at least in the form of an announcement trailer -- at E3 next week.

I hope they go the smart route and just make it an expansion to L4D instead of a complete retail game. They could call it something like "Left 4 Dead Again"

An expansion definately sounds better. They better not call it Left 8 Dead.

Sorry about the stupid remark, had to be said.

I'm somewhat dubious. It is VERY unlike Valve to pump out a sequel to a game only a year or two after the last game came out -- especially for multiplayer games where they tend to actually support their game with free, new content and updates for a few years instead of dropping it and tossing out a sequel. If this is true, I'll be slightly disappointed in them.

Yeah, I agree with the guys above. I'd rather see a fully-fledged expansion with some new campaigns, weapons and game-types rather than a fully-fledged sequel.

L4ft 4 D34d 2 is going to be released at the same time as Thi4f and Zuper M4r10 G4l4x3 2.

I fuckin' called it!

It doesn’t sound very Valve does it? They need to get somewhere near what they have done with Team Fortress 2 in terms of updates (new maps/modes) before they need to think of a sequel.

It could very well be a humongous update that adds new characters and campaigns to L4D than a full blown sequel. I’m sure most of us would prefer that.

DLC with all this stuff would be better, even if you had to shell out a few MS points for it.

Melee weapons sounds neat, though. I would love to use a bat or something.

Hey Valve, L4D 2 is nice, dont get me wrong, but what about Ep. 3???????

I mean the way EP 2 ended it would be a shame if you did not at all speak about it at E3.

Expansion pack almost surely.

Also anyone complaining about how Valve should make more DLC...very few companies support their games like Valve and you greedy sods should bugger off. You should be happy when they add new things for free...not demand them for every game made ever.

I'd have to agree with most here. Doesn't sound like modern Valve, but old Valve would definitely do something like this. Here's to hoping its just an announcement of a huge DLC pack we have to shell some points out for ^__^

@CelicaCrazed, that cracked me up.

Might as well jump on the bandwagon, this smells much more like DLC than a disc-based sequel. Unless The Meat is right and EA forces Valve's hand.

Still, though, chainsaws and axes? Sign me up!

"Left 4 Dead is great and all, but if they're wasting their time on a sequel instead of Half Life Episode 3 imma be pissed."

You do realize Valve has multiple internal teams, right? You're like those people complaining that Starcraft 2 is delaying Diablo 3. Different people working on each. All these big developers need to give their teams names like Blizzard North. Otherwise Internet kids get confused and angry.

I find this rumor hard to believe, it just doesn't sond like Valve and there is a lot of room for DLC (paid or unpaid) in L4D. It just doesn't make sense.

I call BS on this one.

Here's hoping that Valve has something really exciting to show. HL2 EP3 anyone. It's about damn time! Portal 2 would be enough, though.

Expansion > sequel.

Either way, new classes of weapons are great. Now, if they can only add some persistence or differences to the characters, like skills or abilities unique to each of them. That is a much-needed improvement, imo.
yutt's Avatar
yutt at 05/28/2009 10:53
If you look at the free DLC we've received for TF2 on the PC, it isn't even comparable to L4D. L4D's essentially finished what many feel should have been the original release of the game. TF2 DLC has turned it into a completely new game.

Since Valve hasn't stopped with the massive TF2 updates, it appears the system is working for them. We can expect this L4D update to be free.

This sounds like an expansion, not a new game. New characters, new enemies, and new weapons are alright, but I think they should fix the multiplayer first before adding anything else.

I agree with most of you, this sounds a little off. Hopefully.

The new melee weapons thing sounds kind of lame, actually. In theory it sounds cool, but it just seems out of place with L4D's general mood. L4D EXTREME!

I'll be looking forward to this if it is an expansion or stand-alone expansion at a lower price point. If it is full price (50 to 60 bucks) I'll probably just stick with the original L4D and play some custom campaigns until a price drop.

Fun fact: L4D takes place in Pennsylvania.

The true sequel should take place like in Vegas, L.A, or Europe.

L4D costs 40$ with 4 maps, L4D 2 will (I guess) cost 40$ with 4 more maps and small new content. No - just no. This is not Valve at all. This better not be true, because this is BS.

I doubt it. I really don't thin this is a sequel, more likely an Expansion of some kind. Valve isn't stupid, they know that if they just use the same areas from different perspectives, they will be criticized for it.

Not to mention that it's way too soon for a L4D sequel, not to mention very uncharacteristic of Valve to do so. I expect this to be DLC, not a brand new full-fledged game. I think more likely will be the full-on reveal of HL 2: Episode 3, rather than a sequel to L4D, which won't happen.

If it does turn out to be DLC, count me in for that. That idea sounds amazing for a piece of DLC.
