Rumortoid: UFC banning fighters that sign for EA's MMA game? photo
  share: Twitter Facebook Reddit Digg
filed under: #Sports

Here's a rumor that is seriously screwed up if true. It's being suggested that the Ultimate Fighting Championship is blacklisting anybody that wishes to be involved with Electronic Arts' upcoming martial arts game, MMA. UFC currently has a deal with THQ to create official games based on the sport, with UFC 2009: Undisputed proving hugely successful, and it seems that UFC wishes to guard its position in the videogame world jealously.

If the rumor is true, no fighter can lend his name and face to MMA without UFC refusing to endorse them or letting them sign up for the organization. With UFC being such a hugely popular outlet for mixed martial arts, this will likely have a serious effect on EA's ability to bring star power to its game.

This could be one of those rare occassions where EA loses to a rival in the field of sports games.

As much as I love UFC, I've got to say that Dana White is one of the shrewdest most dickhead owners of any sports league. This seriously sounds like something that he would do.

I think you guys are missing it a bit here: it's the potential individual human beings that want to make something of themselves in the UFC that ultimately suffer for this. EA will just pull an "NFL Blitz" and create Ron Mexico-esque characters: they'll be fine.

No, the dickest move is BUYING NFL EXCLUSIVITY so that we get football games with no competition.

I can't fathom EA's decision to make an MMA game when OBVIOUSLY they wouldn't be able to use UFC fighters in it. NO ONE knows hardly ANY MMA fighters that aren't in the UFC.

I mean, the game would fail regardless, so I don't blame the UFC for trying to, essentially, keep it's own game popular.

Though I wouldn't mind a LEGEND'S of MMA type game where I could rock out some matches as Bas Rutten and beat Tank Abbot 100 times out of 100.

If you follow UFC at all you'd not be surprised by this, Jim.

They pretty much blacklist any fighters that leave UFC to fight for another league too. This is no different.

@magnalon i dont think not being in an ea game is gonna hurt anyones mma carrer but its gonna hurt ea cause their business practices are comming back to bite them in the ass, and while they may have changed for the better, but in my opinion only buy buying up good devs i.e. bioware, this is just deserts. i bet this game sells as well as arena football

This is karma catching up for EA and the NFL2K series. The only difference here is that with the NFL players they had no impact in the whole 2K thing, but this quite directly affects MMA fighters since they directly get royalties for these sort of things I believe.

Unlike Activision which is basically the new EA in terms of Dick Moves.

I find this silly and, in a way, just, considering how EA shoved other companies out of the NFL-licensed market. The new EA may be actually trying to make good games and not just shove out the same shit every year, but as long as they held on to that license, they had it coming.

Fedor fought in the Affliction fight but UFC is still looking to snag him. So actually it seems like Fedor COULD be in this game and then eventually be signed to UFC.

The amount of smack talk that's gone on between Dana and Fedor (actually it's more like the amount of smack talk that Dana has dished out on to Fedor and Fedor has replied politely) will probably make it so that he never fights in the UFC. Who knows though, if Kimbo Slice can get a chance then I'm sure once Fedor's contract is up with Affliction maybe Dana will offer huge amounts of money to have him fight in the UFC. Aside from a few guys, the heavyweight division is pretty stagnant when compared to all the others in terms of talent so the UFC needs a guy like Fedor.

Not a huge deal...Everyone knew this would happen. Why would they let their fighters be a part of a competing game? Wouldn't make any sense.

They obviously want to come out with another UFC game in a year.

EA will have to turn to Strikeforce...a lot of talent in that organization.

Wouldn't surprise me.
Dana White didn't get the UFC on top by being Merciful. It doesn't change the fact that no one likes playing as generics, and Pro Evo was the exception to the rule, but still fell under it. Even when Pro Evo was the best Footy game, I still only played as the licensed teams.

I wouldn't play a game where I had to fight as Wallace "Mild Destruction" Mackson versus Jungle Simpson. Unless the game play is miles better than UFC Undisputed like Pro Evo was to Fifa in the PS2 era, which is unlikely.

There are plenty of fighters not in UFC that still have made a name for themselves in MMA. Plus EA could easily do what they've done for Fight Night, and license the likenesses of retired and deceased fighters.

Sounds like Dana White allright.

In any case, it depends on if it is indeed a blanket blacklisting for everyone, regardless of promotional affiliations, or if it only concerns fighters who have at some point fought in the UFC.

The UFC contracts require fighters to sign over rights to use their likeness in games/toys/whatever for all eternity basically. Even after leaving the UFC. So it's quite possible this concerns mainly fighters that are out of the UFC, but the still UFC "owns" the rights to, like for example; Barnett, the Shamrock's, Arlovski, Sylvia, Ortiz and so on. Which is still a considerable list of fighters.

In any case, I would love an MMA game that showcased MMA fighters outside of the UFC. There is a whole world of MMA outside of the UFC, and so many people are missing out on some amazing fighters if they think the UFC is all there is to MMA.

UFC does this constantly, it did with clothing companies, sports books, other promotions, everything. If you don't tow the company line, you get tossed, it's old news for MMA fans, but good that everyone else is getting to see how ridiculous the UFC is sometimes.

reminds me of when they dropped John Fitch and his group when they didn't sign contracts that let the UFC use their likenesses forever before UFC Unleashed came out.

I'd totally believe it. UFC can be bitches when it comes to licensing. Didn't they force some guy to leave because he didn't sign on to the UFC game? Then he came back after giving away his rights.

I kind of hope that, if this rumor is true, it will lead to a lawsuit against Dana White and UFC and, hopefully, UFC is forced to change the contracts they have for the fighters to something that lets them retain control over their likeness when they leave (because that whole bit with the likenesses is extremely anti-competitive, and I'm surprised nobody's blown the whistle on this yet to the FTC).

@kingtobo. No, they really don't EA has improved a lot since the days where they were consistently more evil. Yes, they still have exclusivity on the NFL licence and the Arena Football licence, but they're getting better (if anything, Activision is significantly more evil, almost as bad as Nintendo of America was in the late 80s, early 90s.
