According to a Fudzilla rumor report, Microsoft will slow Elite Xbox 360 manufacturing to a crawl and only offer the unit to select retailers in bundles similar to the sexy red Resident Evil 5 bundle.
Mysterious Microsoft sources are indicating that Microsoft will stop taking orders for traditional Elites in the second quarter, purposefully exhausting inventory of the high-end console. Once toast, Microsoft will transition to the Resident Evil 5-style format and only offer it to select retailers. Allegedly, a new, bigger hard drive (over 120 GB, ftw!) will show up on the market shortly after this happens.
The purpose of the switch seems to be money. According to other shadowy sources, Microsoft stands a chance to make more money off limited edition Elites than the regular busted up joints.
Grain of salt, people.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
This is why I STILL don't own one!
Until I can safely assume that the defect rate is an acceptable percent, I'm never going to buy one. How can I buy somehing knowingly that might need replaceing in a year....thats a lot of wasted $$. Why can't they just make a product that FIXES the stupid hight rate of RRODs?
I do want a 360 though :(
on top of that, i'm sure more people would buy a 360 if it was like a PS3 by being able to swap out hard drives. They'll lose money but save on so much and probably earn more.
PLUS..these companies need to realize we need different colors outside of white, red, black. Nintendo was on the right track during the GBC - GC era..then they fumbled with the Wii.
Its not that awesome.
Seriously.. would Apple still be making iPods and iPhones if 68% of them melted their own GPUs from regular use? Probably not. I did notice that they update the hardware quite often. That says a lot to me as a consumer. I like it when a company tests their products and makes sure that they don't have a 68% return/failure rate.
My PS2 took a fall of about 3.5 feet and hit the hardwood floor. It still plays games. I'm always concerned with quality when I spend loot on something. Sony makes a damn tough product. My PSP stopped reading discs once (it was an old 1000 model) Sony didn't blink when I called for support. After checking if it was still under warranty (which it wasn't) they offered to REPLACE THE WHOLE UNIT for a decent price. I sent my broken PSP in, and received a BRAND SPANKING NEW one. (I think they even paid for the shipping.) That's customer service. This is why I'm biased against MS. It's like they design it with flaws on purpose with plans of making you purchase a new one within a year. Something tells me this should be illegal... isn't it illegal?
BTW, my PS2 was a piece of sh!t. I fixed that thing so many times it almost made me swear off buying any Playstation products. Then I took a deep breath, calmed down and eventually bought a PSP. Goes to show that with any system, regardless of the company, you have to do your research and get the warranty to be sure.
