Rumortoid: Suikoden may get the PlayStation Classics PS1 treatment

by Dale North on 05.08.2008 29 comments

Of all of the libraries of older games I want to dig into for re-release, Konami's is probably the most tempting. They already gave us Castlevania: Symphony of the Night as a PlayStation Classic, and I still play it from time to time on my PSP or PS3.

Siliconera says that the PlayStation classic Suikoden may also see a re-release as a PlayStation Classic. The ESRB re-rated Suikoden as a PlayStation 3 / PSP title, which points to the possiblity of a new downloadable title. Of course, this could mean nothing at all, as there is no confirmation fo a release yet. But then I'd get to kick the ass of Siliconera's Spencer for toying with my emotions.

For those that don't remember, Suikoden was a damned fine RPG (introduction movie above). It had great battle mechanics, an incredible musical score, and a cast of over 100 characters. It spawned several sequels, ranging from great to blah, but this one and its sequel, Suikoden II, were the most treasured. And they both fetch a pretty penny among collectors these days.

Come on, Konami. Let's see this release!

Suikoden and Suikoden 2 rules but the leap to 3D ruined the series for me :(. Great to see this classic brought back though.

I guess I'm in the minority and won't rebuy games I own/owned unless it's remade :x though if I was to rebuy, this would be one of the first (unless Suik II hits the store)

Not interested in this one. Do want to try Suikoden IV, but not the original.
ShawnKelfonne's Avatar
I would so buy it again. I loved the castle battles in Suikoden 1. There's just something utterly amusing about an army of little tiny guys running across the screen shouting as they mow people down.

I love myself a good RPG from time to time.

DO WANT!

I was stupid enough to sell this game for $30 in like grade 8

I'd download this game in a heartbeat... This was the first RPG I played for PS1. I rented it before I bought a memory card, and beat the game after leaving the playstation on for 30 hours or so. I'd hate to try that with a current-gen console... might burn down the house... but at least I'd be able to save now.

I might get this. I'd get Gex 3, Spyro 3, and Ape Escape day 1 though. I love those things.

Man, I have heard such good things about Suikoden II, but I've never had a chance to play it, because it's almost impossible to find.

I own Suikoden 1-4. At least 1 and 2 are a must-play for any respectable RPG fan.
And pick up the matching soundtracks. They rock too.
PaperBowser0's Avatar
Dude, fuck yeah. I own and have played through all of them, and they FUCKING ROCK!!!

If only I had a PS3/PSP.

You know, they already made a Suikoden 1 and 2 compilation for the PSP. But it only came out in Japan because of SCEA's moronic PSP rule of %20, that they won't sell a repackaged game in the states unless at least 20% of the game has been changed or added. Dumbasses.

But yeah... DO... FUCKING... WANT...

@Dexter:

I played Suikoden 2 and it was good, but it was such a sad story. It was the first time I played a game that was sad, but not in the "it moves you to cry" sad. It makes you depressed seeing what has become of the characters. Also, could you believe that my sister who is for the most part a casual gamer owns a copy of Suikoden 2? It's like her one series she is really hardcore for. She asked about selling it and I told her not to! She had NO IDEA how much it's worth.

Suikoden 1 is pretty expensive on ebay too. I can't wait to see the prices drop like they kind of did when SoTN came out. Plus Suikoden is a pretty good game.
Lukich's Avatar
This game made me cry twice? That's how awesome it is.

I actually tried (and failed) to convince Chad to play through it when the Memory Card series first started because I was sure he'd be able to find one in here. Maybe I'm naive, but I really loved this game.
ShadeWithin's Avatar
Suikoden I and II are easily two of the strongest RPG titles on the Playstation, but so many people have yet to play them. Being that Suikoden II is my favorite game it would be great for Sony to release I&II as Classics, just to get the game out there and maybe seal the deal on a 6th iteration. Also if anyone's interested I recently wrote a MM on the Suikoden series, go check it out if you get a chance.

Suikoden I I've played enough to skip. I'd be more excited if it was the sequel, but if the first is released.....

I am one of the few people that actually thinks Suikoden III was the best. It had it's problems, but I really believe it is a flawed masterpiece. The three points of view were cool. It also hinted at a potentially awesome endgame scenario that was completely squandered with Suikoden IV and V.
