Rumortoid: Steven Spielberg wants to produce Halo movie photo

IESB is reporting that Steven Spielberg is in negotiations to develop a Halo movie. Spielberg was "blown away” by Stuart Beattie’s script for the Halo movie, which is based on the first novel in the Halo book series.

Hard to say if this is good news or not. I would have loved whatever Peter Jackson and Neil Blomkamp would have put out (have you seen the trailers for District 9?!) but not sure with Steven. Like Joystiq, Spielberg left a really bad taste in my mouth with the last Indiana Jones movie.

How do you feel about this if it turns out to be true? Think Steven can do a Halo movie justice?

After the last Indian Jones movie, I think the header image perfectly sums up what Spielberg will do to Halo.

Given a good script, Spilberg will surely deliver a great film. Of course, he is no longer the Spilberg that did Jaws or Encounters, but to be fair, the Last Indiana Jones was written by George Lucas, and he is the one that just plain sucks by now.

On the bright side, this already has aliens in it, so no plottwists here.

If this happens, please please please let them do it right. If it's based on Fall of Reach they've gotten to a good start but even then, if this just turns into another shallow Hollywood cash in like everything else these days, it'll only reinforce the Halo stereotype.

I can see them throwing out the story and taking bits and pieces that resemble Halo (MC, guns, Halo, Aliens and Johnson) and sticking in some shiny lights and big explosions to please the 10 year olds and rake in the cash.

@Jon B. Are you referring to the end of A.I? Those weren't aliens they were extremely advanced robots.

First of all, this script has been leaked around the Internet for months now and honestly, it's really not that good.

Second, Steven Spielberg makes good films when George Lucas isn't involved, so I won't put too much fault on him for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. That being said, Spielberg does not seem to have much reverence for his source material in his adaptations so I am not sure I would like him to take on this project. Yes, ha ha, I know that Halo's plot and source is far from complex. Still, I think that there's a way of expanding on Halo in a way that is faithful to the universe and "lore?". But I feel as though Spielberg would just take it and do whatever he wants with it.

The screenplay writer, Stuart Beattie, also wrote the screenplay for G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra.

That doesn't bode well for this movie, does it?

You people all talk copious amounts of poo!

You have all watched most of Spielberg's films, and enjoyed them.
He is a brilliant film director who has had many more hits than misses. The fact that he is even considering to work on a halo movie adaption is fantastic.

Video game adaptions have been left in the hands of complete fuckwits of late.

And, Tascar. I bet the script you speak of floating around on the internet is not the script that Spielberg holds in his hands.

I guarantee people believed that batman should have been left alone before Nolan got his hands on it. I also guarantee those same people loved The Dark Knight.

We don't know until we watch it.

I recently read The Fall of Reach and found it to be completely devoid of originality and excitement. It was painful. The only thing mildly redeeming were a few of the ship battles. The Master Chief lacks humanity or anything really compelling. "I'm supposed to kill shit, so I guess I'll kill shit, whatever you say, boss." It's like styrofoam peanuts packed into the shell of Ender's Game.

They'd better get a good screenwriter to add something to Eric Nylund's generic mess. Most Dtoid folks could have written a more compelling tale in a single blog post.

The last Indiana jones was co created by George Lucas... Need i say more? At least with Spielberg we will have a great story, not just gratutious amounts of action. He is afterall one of my favourite directors of all time.

I dont think Neil Blomkamp should have stuck with halo. If Halo wasnt shut down he would have never made District 9. I saw it at a pre-screening. It was fucking awesome. I dont think we would have done as good a job with halo. Also, I bought Fall of Reach, and i just couldn't finish it. It was horrible. So any movie based entriley on that book will be shit.

Big name like him and this will be dumbed down to a pg or pg-13 rateing. It'll be homogenized so they can fill the seats with the teen crowd and completly ignore what could be a great movie.

Spielberg can do war(Saving Private Ryan, Empire of the Sun) and he can do sci-fi(ET, Minority Report, etc). I always have faith in him when Lucas isn't around.

50 bucks Tom Hanks plays Master Chief.

@Corak, Halo is basically a teen game anyway, i strongly doubt they'll pull an R-rated movie out of it. That's not to say they couldn't if they tried, but they won't because PG13 movies are historically the bigger moneymakers. (Besides, the halo crowd is like %95.7 prepubescent 13 y/o's anyway.)

I think it's funny that people are COMPLAINING that Speilberg is interested. He's one of the most consistent directors i can think of when it comes to general polish and quality and he's directed several of the best movies ever made in their respective genres... so to see his name as a negative because of IJ4, which was destined to suck from its conception, is a little harsh.

Also, do people really think making a passable Halo movie would be hard? It would basically make itself. Just imagine a pussified version of Starship Troopers.

I can dig it. The best news in this blurb is that the script is based on the first book, which was probably my favorite.

Same here. I enjoyed the book, so I hope the film lands on a similar amount of win or more.

As for people who didn't like Fall of Reach, they should've stopped when they felt they didn't like the writing style or the plot (and sell it online if they didn't browse/read a bit in store).

Most books play out like a movie in my mind anyway and I would really like this movie to meet some of my expectations. Maybe not all because I get that movie makers have to abridge a lot of details. Hopefully the movie has some new points and maybe some things that are perks from having read Fall of Reach.

No, just no. This Beattie guy wrote G.I. Joe, so fuck that. Microsoft isn't going to do shit, but Bungie should step in and say who they want directing this things, because even though they don't own the license, they know Halo the best and should stop this from happening.

The only way a Halo movie will work is if it's done by Jackson/Blomkamp or another duo or single director of that caliber. District 9 looks awesome, and if that is any indication, then the Halo movie would have also been awesome. Get somebody that can do it right, not someone who is looking for a cash-in. And besides, Spielberg directed the last Indiana Jones movie. Enough said.

@ eggdog14

You're only as good as your last movie. Everyone knows how bad the new Indiana Jones movie sucked, and thats all that people will think about until he makes a better movie. If he can make a good halo movie, more power to him, but can you blame me if I don't want the director of that piece of shit and the writer of the summer's biggest piece of shit (G.I. Joe) to make this movie?

Maybe it's just me, but I think Jackson and Blomkamp could've done the Halo license justice.

"You're only as good as your last movie," fine, that doesn't change the fact that Speilberg has been nominated for best director 6 times, with 2 wins. And though the Oscars have recently deteriorated into an incomprehensible mess, it still says something that he's the highest-paid and most recognizable director on the planet, and I'd still take him any day over someone who's "last movie" was really good, especially for a high production value FX driven movie.

Lets look at exact opposite side of the spectrum: "Transformers" was an OKAY action movie, but that didn't mean Micheal Bay was still a good choice to direct the second one even though his "last movie" was passable... as proven by... the second one.

In fact, lots of directors have one really good movie, but it doesn't mean their next 5 won't inhale dick.

...Peter Jackson would still prolly rock that shit though, so i've yet to uncross my fingers.

Not that this matters at all because speilberg's probably just producing it, which is a GREAT choice on his part because the chance of a Halo movie breaking some sort of record in the CA$H MONEY department is roughly 100%. It actually baffles me why studio's aren't leaping at the chance to make a Halo movie – Even if it sucks it's going to rake in the bills.

Yes I know that the teen crowd plays Halo but as it stands now I believe Halo is rated M correct? Yes I know we all don't pay attention to the ratings but saying this movie should be pg-13 just because that is the group playing the game is interesting. M rated games are described as the following

"Contains content that is considered unsuitable for teenagers and others under the age of 17. Titles in this category may contain intense violence such as blood and gore, sexual references and/or strong language."

If that doesn't scream R rating I don't know what does. I want a hardcore sci-fi movie with nothing held back. I think this is the main reason that Jackson and crew didn't get it made, they wanted something hardcore maybe like District 9 and the studio didn't. They bailed not wanting to sacrifice their ideas, something I greatly respect. And now it could go to someone who would have no problem dumbing it down for the masses. I respect Spielberg for his past works, but he has to win me back somehow.

Oh no I'm just saying that even if Halo was a harsh mature, they'd still make a PG-13 movie to guarantee a wider demographic. Max Payne, for example, is a MUCH harder mature, and they managed a PG-13 rating for the movie, so i doubt they'd risk the losses on a surefire blockbuster like Halo. (I've yet to, and refuse to, see max payne, mind you. I hear it was a travesty.)

Regardless, District 9 looks far more interesting than a Halo movie could ever be, so i'm not worried.
