Rumortoid: Slim PS3 coming this fall, Sony finally breaking even

Rumortoid: Slim PS3 coming this fall, Sony finally breaking even photo
     PS3

If there's one thing you can count on from Sony, it's that a smaller and cheaper redesign of each of every console will eventually come. It's happened for every system they've released except for their newest. Rumors of a slimmer PlayStation 3 are not new. But this new rumor of a fall release for this system has our ears perked back up again.

Stuff.tv says that Sony is expected to break even on the PS3 in August. Analysts say that they'll finally turn a profit, and will then release this slimmer version to boost demand. Of course, this new version would sport smaller processors and graphics chips, and will probably make the old one look silly and fat.

None of this has been confirmed, but the fall date is in line with what we've heard before.

Come on, guys. Make my dreams of a bedroom PS3 (or the transplant of the old one into the bedroom) come true. Oh, and Sony? Skip the silver for glossy white.

A slim PS3 was inevitable and fairly predictable. The White PS3 had such a trimmed down mainboard, that it was clear where Sony were heading with things.

Yeah, thats cool...

But can it be used as a blunt weapon?

I bought a fat PS2 only last year... And I've very happy with the Hard Disk space it provides, thank you very much ;)

I wonder if it will look more like a portable grill, rather than the larger Forman model?

If this happens, then that means the regular PS3 would drop in price and I could get one! Woo hoo redesign!

Holy shit! A slim model?!

That is sexy!

Of course I am not buying one... All ready got my fatso here.

sounds awesome, but i'm wondering if such a "media power house" would be suitable in a smaller form factor. isn't it nicer when you can stack it on other a/v components and such?

Could be the profile 2.0 Blu-ray player for the Bed Room I was thinking about buying later this year.

I thought they were "breaking even" months ago.

Hopefully, this is for real and more people will get one.

Also, white is the new black.

I want one, but I know I shouldn't spend that much money to replace my old PS3. I bet I'll subconsciously abuse it to the point of breaking once this comes out.

This would really help them out in Japan. Granted, they aren't doing -terribly-, they could definitely use a boost to kick it into mainstream.

Looks cool. It will happen eventually, but I'm not buying another, slimmer, PS3 if my current one is still working. Especially in all its hardware BC glory.

I like the way my big one looks next to my roommate's 360, a slimmer one would have to sit next to the Wii :(

I would honestly prefer a smaller version, the ps3 is sooo huge and even though I can just fit my 360 in my room a PS3 will only topple the table over with its weight :( Slimmer = Happy lauren

This is relevant to my interests. One of the reasons that I haven't dropped the money on a PS3 or 360 is that they are huge compared to my Gamecube and PS2 slim. Yes, I know my PC is larger than all of those, but my PC doesn't sit in the living room, unlike my consoles. Having them be not noticeable is a good thing.

I'd love a slim PS3, but honestly, even if they DID make one, it wouldn't have backwards compatibility. Plus, I really don't think they could pack all the PS3s stuff into something thin. I'm good with mine as it is now.

I just don't see this happening any time soon. If they didn't have the technology to make it slim a year and a half ago, I doubt they've improved enough to do it now. The PSone and the PStwo didn't come out until what, five years after the original console releases? I know Sony is SKU-happy these days, but this would alienate early adopters and I feel like it'd just be ridiculous.

I'm planing to get a PS3 when there is a price drop. If I can get smaller too I'm all for it. I don't really care about backward compatibility since I'll keep my PStwo.

I will be so unbelievably pissed if this comes true. I got my PS3 for 100 dollars off but a slimmer version would be worth that.

Fawwkkkk.

Last night I had a dream where I bought a 360 elite opened the box then discovered I had actually bought a 360m which was a tiny slim laptop version of the 360. I know that no one cares, and in fact neither do I, I just thought it was weird I dreamt about something similar last night. Also, how nerdy am I that that is what I dream about?

Come on, guys. Make my dreams of a bedroom PS3

Pretty much what I've been thinking. Though, which one goes in the bedroom and which one stays downstairs completely depends on BC, wireless capability, and HDD space.

Dale North's "story" looks familiar. http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/01/is-sonys-ps3-getting-a-redesign/ That's right, now I remember where I saw it.

At least the writer there had the courtesy to credit the pic to T3.com. Instead of putting something lame like, "YEP, THIS AGAIN" over the pictures credited site.

Another great "story" by the "editors" of Destructoid.
