Rumortoid: Shenmue 1 & 2 ported to the Wii?

Rumortoid: Shenmue 1 & 2 ported to the Wii? photo
     Rumortoid

Ah, Shenmue. I'll never forget firing it up on the Dreamcast and being in a state of semi-shock over the graphics and gameplay, not to mention a sense of delight that I was playing a game set in various parts of Japan and Hong Kong (the Japanophile in me was already beginning to set in.)

Suffice to say I would love to play the game again, not to mention its sequel. If rumors are to be believed, I just may get to do that in a new way: a poster on a GameFAQs forum remarked that a Swedish magazine called Gamereactor had news that Shenmue 1 & 2 would be ported to the Wii with extra minigames added and use of the Wiimote enabled. The exact quote as it reads from the magazine:

"Shenmue is back!"
"Sega has rereleased classics like Nights,Bass Fishing and House of the Dead lately. Now it's said that Shenmue is next. But don't think that it's about a new game, instead, they're bringing back the two original Shenmue games with extra Wiimote-minigames which will be released for the Wii."

I don't personally see this happening, but it would be most welcome if it did. The majority of the fanbase for the Shenmue games is definitely rabid for a remake or a sequel, but we don't have anything truly concrete here. This rumor has already been added to the Shenmue Wikipedia entry, so here's to hoping we might see some truth out of it in the near future.

I would be all about this. Never got a chance to play Shenmue II. And hopefully if it sold well they might actually finish the damn series.

I want the actual finished story rather than remakes. Seriously Sega. First you can this game, canned the online (and Asia only.) Shenmue game, and hopefully this isn't true.

I've played the piss out of Shenmue II... give us Shenmue III goddammit.

Of course, if this rumor turns out to be true and we do get a Wii compilation, I would go out and buy it day-one to support my beloved series.

And to all the Wii-haters: The QTEs are established in our minds as button presses, but you remember all the parts in the game where you're controlling Ryo's disembodied hands? The dart game? Yeah.
Although I won't lie--if Shenmue III was announced for 360 I'd go and buy one just for that.

I wish it was that Shenmue MMO that was rumored to be in development in the summer of '06...cause that would be SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO dumb.

I _have_ to comment on this.. ::U_U:: Shenmue 3 instead, please dear God. I'm sorry, I have Shenmue 1 for DC, 2 for DC (Import), 1 (DVD Movie) for Xbox 1, and 2 for Xbox 1. I'm feeling so insulted that they only offer ports and re-releases. This feeling can only be described as I feel like I'm an Earthbound/Mother fan when Sega/Nin won't do the RIGHT thing. @_@

This is good news, if true. Thing is there's more going on here than you think.

Sega are following Capcom's model of re-releases of certain games that would work well on Wii, and are also helping produce new stuff, (cue Mad World with Platinum).

They are well aware that with certain games, going well down on Wii, (RE4 from Capcom too) that there's money to be made, giving some games a second chance.

This is especially magnified, when many developers avoid Wii development like the plague. Without much challenge in this area, Sega will help bolster the Wii catalogue, while bringing home the loot. Win win for everyone.

I'd welcome Shenmue on Wii, and I'm sure if there is enough interest and sales, Sega would perhaps really consider putting Shenmue 3 into development.

Great, with all the Dreamcast library raiding, we might yet get a Wii version of Cosmic Smash. I can pray.

I love that they are going to have "added mini-games". Waggle based ones no doubt.

Either way, this is a good thing. I liked the first game but never finished it, so this would be good.

Damnit. Knock it off already! If they keep porting all of the awesome Dreamcast games to other systems (Ikaruga, Soul Caliber, now Shenmue), then pretty soon there won't be any reason for me to own one. Stop trying to erase the existance of what was probably the greatest video game system ever (that wasn't the Super Nintendo)!
