There's not much meat on the bones of this story yet, but a murmur has surfaced hinting that Rockstar will soon be going PS3 exclusive once the multi-platform Grand Theft Auto IV is released. The rumor comes from Play Magazine, which claimed in its GTAIV preview:

"The game is both PS3 and 360, but Rockstar has suggested that all further game development is going to be PS3 exclusive."

I'm not sure what to make of that. If it's true, then that's a huge potential success for Sony, but at the same time, it's difficult to believe that Rockstar would choose to restrict its consumer base, especially with Bully: Scholarship Edition pegged for release on the Wii and 360. That, and any potential hostile takeovers could put paid to such an ideal.

It's a bit of a stretch for the moment until more details arise, so this is definitely in the rumor camp for now. If by some bizarre turn of events it turns out to be true though, it could be a most ... interesting development in the current-gen console war.

Unless Sony gives them a blank check I somehow doubt they'd do it for nothing.

Of course, Mircosoft would probably counter with their own blank check resulting in a bidding war for exclusivity rights for GTAV

I doubt it, because the ability to sell all those extra copies on 2 systems vs. 1 is enough of a blank check

On the chance that this is true (which is quite slim), this could be good news for PS3 owners since they'll have more good exclusive games coming.

If Sony bought out the shres from shareholder or what not it could be possible if Rockstars shareholders did in fact want to sell, unlike Yahoo to Microsoft.

I remember very vaguely Rockstar saying that they are working on PS3 exclusive stuff after GTA4, although I believe that was timed stuff. Could have more substance to it that we realise.

I think what that means is that the reason for any subsequent delays, seem to stem from development on the PS3. GTAIV is essentially good to go for 360, but for a simultaneous release, all resources are dedicated to the PS3 development of the game.

I don't see it happening. GTA has to make as much money as it can to cover development, production, marketing, lawsuits, etc.

I think it will stay multi-platform.

I was saying that Sony could purchase Rockstar through it's share holders and I threw in the Yahoo thing as an example as shareholders can say no thanks.

Tell that to THQ, who canned PS3 development of Frontlines, or Valve, who's not making their next game on PS3, or 2K Boston, who didn't even consider putting Bioshock on PS3.

Exclusivity is a 2-way street. Don't make it seems so terrible if the PS3 gets exclusives, yet the 360 has a bunch, and nobody complains. Or do people STILL.....STILL!!!! want to keep up the statement of "PS3 has no games"?????

Think you misinterpreted their statement. They have, like many other companies, stated that the PS3 will be the lead platform for development since porting PS3 -> 360 is a hell of a lot easier than 360 -> PS3. I just read it as the lead SKU of their next game will be PS3 for reduced headaches and development costs.

That's because right now in the eyes of developers, the 360 is the console with the bigger sales and more owners, so therefore they'll be looking to either make it a 360 exclusive and make it easier for them cause they don't have to port it to the PS3, or make it multiplatform and have more sales. To them, loosing sales of PS3 owners doesn't seem like much but loosing sales from 360 owners is alot.

Just as an example to my previous statement. The PS3 versions of both DMC4 and Burnout Paradise were the lead development SKUs for ease of porting and making sure the experience was the same for both consoles.

I dunno about this one, wasn't the PS3 team the whole reason GTA4 got pushed back? Doesn't seem all peaches and cream to me.

Maybe they mean they are going to make an exclusive game for PS3, as opposed to going completely PS3. The 360 market is way to big to completely ignore...

mix.... why would sony be buying TT? (you can't buy r*, they're not publicly traded) There's no mention of that anywhere, nor does it even make any sense. You're mixing up stories.... This is about a developer, the buyout is about a publisher.

Hope the rumor is false... if this rumor is true- and Rockstar actually does go PS3 exclusive... it would be a huge slap in the face to their upcoming fanbase on the Xbox 360.

Consider the GTAIV exclusive episodes; there's probably about 3 of them coming- the first being released this fall.. with episode 2 and 3 probably stretched out over several months each.. we'll still be getting content until Spring/Summer 2009!

Will they just cut us off for good after that? That would seem insulting to all Rockstar supporters on Xbox 360 if this rumor proves to be true..

OH WELL- we still have 'APB' coming out for PC and 360.

I remember reading that they were working on a ps3 exclusive game after GTAIV. Probably to stay neutral after giving MS exclusive episodes for GTAIV. It wouldn't make sense for all of their games to be ps3 exclusive (I wouldn't mind it of course) since there are alot of 360's out there and ps3 to 360 ports don't seem to be that difficult.

Err didn't most the PS2 GTA games come out on the Xbox eventually? So that means that GTA has NEVER been a exclusive to SONY. Exclusive in terms of when its released but not by which consoles it appears on. TBH now that SONY and Microsoft have a console each of roughly the same capabilities i think it would be a un-wise move by any company to not produce for both current gen consoles. Games like Bioshock and Mass Effect could COULD, in theory make it to a SONY console. There's no agreement in place to stop this happening, its just the devs of said games can't be assed remaking it for another console and not wanting EA doing it for them. Just like now Bungie is free of Microsoft they can develop for PS3..

Didn't M$ pay Rackstar several millions of dollars to produce 360 exclusive DLC?
Why would they abandon Microsoft when they're rolling in their money?

I agree with Carac, it is much more likely that they intend to start using the PS3 as the lead platform and that Play Magazine have simply mis-interpreted whatever rumours they have heard.

More to the point though I remember seeing an interview with Jack Tretton just after GTA4 was announced to be multi-platform and he said way back then that the next Rockstar franchise was going to be a PS3 exclusive but it wasn't LA Noir...maybe he wasn't full of BS after all...

Also if I remember correctly Rockstar was prepared to make GTA4 a PS3 exclusive if Ken Kutaragi said he wanted it to be....but he didn't because he's a crazy old man, so rockstar took Microsoft's offer and jumped ship with GTA but that doesn't mean they're not inclined to go PS3 exclusive... and GTA3 and Halo3 proves you can make money on a one console exclusive game if it's big enough

Rockstar is the kind of company that does stuff to make people made on purpose. If they know this gets under microsofts skin they'll do it. There's no good reason, they just act like resentful teenagers

Yeah, this seems unlikely considering the GTA IV DLC deal with MS. I'm going to look at this one skeptically for now.

I highly doubt it. What would they gain by going exclusive? Sony's thanks, a one-time check, and the praise of the Sony Defense Force? Not worth losing all the money from 360 versions of future titles.

I think people are forgetting that this "new Rockstar PS3 exclusive game" is most probably NOT a GTA game and most people don't see Rockstar like we see Rockstar they just see GTA as GTA.

I mean look at Bully - fantastic game but sold like a turd sandwich which means that Rockstar may not have so much to lose by making a PS3 exclusive game and naming their price to Sony... who knows maybe there's a 360 exclusive game in the works as well (that isn't GTA related)

I'm gonna file this one under "highly unlikely."

I simply doubt MS would let this happen after the premium they paid to get GTAIV on day one, right alongside the PS3. The house that Gates built just won't let it happen.

Plus, as has been mentioned, there are already games in development for the 360 and unless they were outright canned, which in and of itself would cost loads of dollars on this point in sunk costs, it wouldn't be true.

I'm gonna lean toward "PS3 will be the lead dev platform" over "fuck the 360."
