Rumortoid: Report says Xbox 360 to get Blu-ray

Rumortoid: Report says Xbox 360 to get Blu-ray photo
     Xbox 360

The Xbox 360 external Blu-ray drive rumor will never die. According to a report by XbitLabs, Toshiba and Samsung have been contracted to manufacture a Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360. It also states that Microsoft is targeting a $100 - $150 price-point for the item, which would make watching Blu-rays at home an affordable endeavor.

What is the reason for the alleged move to a Blu-ray drive? Apparently Microsoft wants to ruin yet another high-definition format. In fact, according to my sources, Microsoft already has several bulldozers and shovels out in the middle of the Nevada desert in preparation for the burial of millions of Blu-rays.

Kidding aside, there is a severe lack of substantiation to this report. What we do know is that Blu-ray was an early idea after HD-DVD was all but finished, but it was never (to our knowledge) seriously discussed.

Would any of you bother buying a Blu-ray drive instead of a PlayStation 3?

I would buy it. i fell for the HD-DVD drive so why not?

I would buy it on one condition (and this is if Microsoft was smart) they did an update on the drive itself so that it allowed for a graphic/data update to the 360 itself by plugging it in accesing the orig power of the 360. Then it would be worth it:) Think about it Microsoft I am just saying.

I could see the add on being done for movies as is it not Sonys technology? MS has a large install base so that means more $$ for Sony as well as MS.

Could very well happen.

But wouldn't it be just for movies and not gaming? Big deal. I thought Microsoft was all about "digital distribution." Shenanigans are being called.

I would prbly buy it....as it stands right now, there is little to no reason for me to buy a PS3 (LBP and Blu-Ray being the only ones)

Therefore...bring on the Blu Ray!

I've had a PS3 for over a year and I'm yet to watch a blu-ray.

MS would be better off concentrating on distributing movies digitally. Shaving a ton of money off their hard drives would help.

As much as I am loathe to say it, I'd probably pick up a PS3 before I'd buy an Xbox Blu-ray drive. I'm happy with DVDs (as of now), so my purchasing decision would be based on Blu-ray as an added feature rather than the main feature. Buying a PS3 gives me access to (some) games not accessible anywhere else plus a Blu-ray player. Buying an Xbox add-on would just soup up my existing machine.

Yeah, Sony would obviously be getting a cut from every sale, but it would put a pretty big dent in PS3 sales.
Lord knows I bought mine just to play teh Blu-Rayz.

If it were about $100 I would certainly consider buying a Blu-Ray add-on. Anything beyond that and I would probably just rather get a PS3 (since I plan on getting one anyway some day).

i'd buy it for about $100. i was once really considering a ps3 mostly for BluRay, but the removal of PS2 BC killed that idea for me(I dont want to have to have 2 playstations hooked up.. my apt is geeky enough as is)

Otherwise I'd just wait until standalone players are down to about $150 or when I can get a budget audio receiver with built in BluRay

can someone please kill this fucking rumor? I mean how many time have we already heard about a 360 blu-ray drivr?

If I didn't have a Blu-Ray player already I'd consider this under 1 condition, that it was capable of being updated. Getting a new Blu-Ray movie only to have it not work because it required an update and MS didn't allow it would make me very upset.

I could see it being mostly for the the AVphiles who only own a 360 but not want to spend the extra cash on a PS3. I would think a much larger harddrive would be more appropriate for MS's business plan though.

Quiet 360 first surely. I will wait until a brand like oppo release a bluray player, but I just do not feel the need for a year or so yet. MS are throwing out the games I want to play most and long may it continue. Supporting MKV might interest me more. BluRay would be nice but I just do not think it would be worth the effort, I can possibly see it as an elite replacement but unless it is whisper quiet my money stays in my pocket.

Yes, I would, but this isn't happening. It's not. Manufacturers have been rumored to be preparing to do this for the better part of a year now.

If I didn't own a PS3 I'd consider it, $100 seems like a deal.

360 + BD Drive = PS3 with DVD9 games only, for a higher price.

If you want a Blu-ray player, PS3 is the only choice. The games and Internet Browser (However crappy it is) are a great bonus. The FW updates update the BD Drive aswell. It's kind of a no brainer if you ask me.

I don't have a ps3, not quite enough games for me to make the leap yet. I do own a 360 though and Dark Knight comes out in December on bluray... Yeah, I'd buy the drive if it was around the $100 price point. Alot better than spending $400.

Dark Knight... I <3 You.

i would probably wait for a PS3 price cut. i am not in a hurry to get blu-ray i just wanna take LBP for a swing and god of war when that comes out in 2 years.

I'd get a BR player in lieu of a PS3. There's not a single game on the PS3 or coming to the PS3 in the future(except for GoW3) that interests me enough to warrant spending more than $100 on.

Why pay microsoft $300-$400 for a blu-ray playing game console that's going to break down constantly and further microsoft lock-in when you could just buy a PSTriple that doesn't do either of those things?

Its an add-on for those who already own a 360.

For those talking about blu-ray updates, I had an HD-DVD and it updated several times in the 6 month lifespan it had. So Im sure IF this whole thing is more than rumor, the drive would be updated regularly.

The external drive would be a better deal for consumers if the price point is closer to $100 than buying a PS3.
Nothing against the PS3, btw.
But with the external drive for the 360, it gives the consumer the option IMHO that could be a better deal that could be similar the external HD DVD drive:
1) it would be a dedicated drive used only for movies (I hope), so no wear and tear on the main optical drive.
2) it will more than likely be capable of connecting to a PC, which a lot of people have done with their X360 HD DVD drive.
3) portability (hanging with friends/family that have a 360 but no Blu drive, take yours).
4) Unless you can find a used PS3, the cheapest is $400 (obviously an OK price if you are going to use a PS3 for more than playing movies.)

No, for two reasons:

1. I have a PS3.
2. $30 movies can blow me.
